4 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Fr. Joseph s Corner... [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an e-mail to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] Let us have a story today... O nce upon a time, there was a man who looked upon Christmas as a lot of humbug. He wasn't a Scrooge. He was a very kind and decent person, generous to his family, and upright in all his dealings with other people. But, he didn't believe all that stuff about an incarnation, which churches proclaim at Christmas. And he was too honest to pretend that he did. I am truly sorry to distress you, he told his wife, who was a faithful churchgoer, but I simply cannot understand this claim that God became man. It doesn't make any sense to me. Then on Christmas Eve, his wife and children went to church for the Midnight Mass. He declined to accompany them. I'd feel like a hypocrite, he explained. I'd much rather stay at home. But I'll wait up for you. Shortly after his family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window and watched the flurries getting heavier and heavier. If we must have a Christmas, he reflected, it's nice to have a white one. He went back to his chair by the fireside and began to read his newspaper. A few minutes later, he was startled by a thudding sound. It was quickly followed by another, then another. He thought that someone must be throwing snow balls at his living room window. When he went to the front door to investigate, he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They had been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter, had tried to fly through his window. I can't let those poor creatures lie there and freeze, he thought. But, how can I help them? Then he remembered the barn where the children s pony was stabled. It would provide a warm shelter. He quickly put on his coat and galoshes and tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on the light. But the birds didn't come in. Food will bring them in, he thought. So he hurried back to the house for bread crumbs, which he sprinkled on the snow to make a trail into the barn. To his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs and continued to flop around helplessly in the snow. He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around and waving his arms. They scattered in every direction except into the warm, lighted barn. They find me a strange and terrifying creature, he said to himself, and I can t seem to think of any way to let them know that they can trust me. If only I could be a bird myself for a few minutes, perhaps I could lead them to safety. Just at that moment, the church bells began to ring. He stood silently for a while, listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. Then he sank to his knees in the snow. Now I understand, he whispered. Now I see why you had to do it. (Author Unknown) Prayerful wishes, Fr. Joseph Have a Very Blessed Christmas!

SVdP Bend is pleased to report that a total of $5,138.10 was received from St. Francis of Assisi: $3,050 from the parishioners and $2,088.10 from the Church. The monies will go directly into our Food Pantry Account for the needy in Bend. Sincere thanks to all! Jeff Rickman, Director, St. Vincent de Paul, Bend And Thanks to Our God Please join us as we thank our heavenly Father for the goodness He has poured out on the Pregnancy Resource Center in Bend. We are thankful that He provides an abundance of good and perfect gifts for us. As we have prayed, God has shown Himself faithful: We have been praying for new volunteers and the opportunity to be open at our center for a full day on Thursday. God has blessed us with a great team who will help us reach that goal by the beginning of the year. We have been praying that God would bring clients to us. Our number is beginning to increase as we see more clients signup for Learn 2 Earn, Pregnancy Tests, and Ultrasounds. We have been praying for more room. This was unexpectedly answered two-fold as we were able to bless our community with a free-clothing give-away, and then we inherited a new storage/break/work room when our admin team moved to Redmond. As we approach 2016, please join us in praying that we are able to build closer relationships with local churches and leaders. We believe God has positioned us to not only serve those who come through our doors, but to be a resource for local churches, providing education and classes to the men and women who need hope and healing. Grateful to serve an unchanging God, Leanne Woods, Director, PRC of Bend 5

6 Dispelling a Myth It is important to dispel a myth. Our parish has not yet completed the process of refinancing our debt on the New Church. Therefore, we must continue to be obligated to make monthly payments of $28,000 toward the $3.5 million-dollar loan. The St. Francis Finance Committee has worked very hard over the last 12 months to make sure our financial footing is strong and able to support our faith-building efforts. As mentioned above, our mortgage on the New Church is currently at about $3.5 million, which equals a payment of about $28,000 a month. The Parish and the Diocese have been working for the last 12 months on refinancing this debt, which will, hopefully, result in lower payments in the future. I know some in our parish community believe this has already been completed, but it has not. Therefore, we must continue to be good stewards of the money we were loaned for construction of the New Church. This means continuing to make the payments to which we are obligated. This is why your continued tithing is so important. Unfortunately, with tougher lending standards after the Great Recession, this has been a long and laborious process one we have still not completed but, we are still working on. When the process (or if the process) will be completed, we do not yet know. We will keep you up-todate on our efforts as news becomes available. ST.
