Messiah Jesus Q&A NOTES: Not all verses are listed for a topic. Further Bible study will reveal much more. Study the context of the suggested verses for more information. Question Answer Scripture NASB What does Messiah mean? Messiah is literally the anointed one. Messiah from the Hebrew and Christ from the Greek mean the same thing. John 4:25 The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when that one comes, he will declare all things to us. John 4:25 What will Messiah do? As the Anointed One, he will fill the roles of priest, prophet, and king. He delivers mankind from sin and will govern the world. Hebrews 2:17 Hebrews 4:14 Deuteronomy 18:18 Isaiah 9:6-7 Jeremiah 23:5 Therefore, he had to be made like his brethren in all things, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Hebrews 4:14 I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. Deuteronomy 18:18 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of his government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, Messiah Jesus Q&A 1 revised 3/29/18

to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. Isaiah 9:6-7 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. Jeremiah 23:5 Why were the Jews waiting for Messiah? God promised David that his descendant s throne would be forever. Israel was not governing its own land at the time Jesus was on earth. Since Rome was in control at that time, the Jews wanted someone to take back governing the land for Israel. 2 Samuel 7:12-13 Acts 1:6 When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 2 Samuel 7:12-13 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel? Acts 1:6 When was God s plan for Messiah revealed in Scripture? God s plan for Messiah was first revealed after Adam s sin in the Garden and in prophecy to Abraham, Moses, and throughout the Old Testament. Genesis 3:15 Genesis 22:18 Genesis 49:10 Deuteronomy 18:18 Other verses: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel. Genesis 3:15 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. Genesis 22:18 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler s staff from between his Messiah Jesus Q&A 2 revised 3/29/18

Isaiah 9:6-7 Jeremiah 23:5 Micah 5:2 feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. Genesis 49:10 I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. Deuteronomy 18:18 Who is God s Messiah (Christ or Anointed One)? God s Messiah (Christ or Anointed One) is Jesus. Matthew 16: 15-17 John 20:31 [Jesus] said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 16:15-17 But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31 How do we know Jesus is the Messiah (Christ)? Jesus said he was the Messiah. It was also revealed by God to Peter. John 4:25-26 Matthew 16: 15-17 The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when that one comes, he will declare all things to us. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he. John 4:25-36 [Jesus] said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 16:15-17 Messiah Jesus Q&A 3 revised 3/29/18

Who is Jesus? Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, the Anointed One (Messiah/Christ), the Son of Man, and mediator between God and man. John 3:16 Matthew 16: 15-17 Luke 1:35 Matthew 9:6 Mark 10:33 John 6:27 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 [Jesus] said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 16:15-17 1 Timothy 2:5 The angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy child shall be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins then he said to the paralytic, Get up, pick up your bed and go home. Matthew 9:6 [Jesus] saying, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles. Mark 10:33 Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on him the Father, God, has set His seal. John 6:27 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5 Messiah Jesus Q&A 4 revised 3/29/18

When did Jesus come into being? Jesus began to exist at his conception. Luke 1:31-33 Galatians 4:4 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end. Luke 1:31-33 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law. Galatians 4:4 Could Jesus be tempted? Yes, Jesus was tempted. Luke 4:1-2 Hebrews 4:15 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, he became hungry. Luke 4:1-2 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one [Jesus] who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15 Could Jesus get tired? Yes, Jesus got tired. John 4:6 Matthew 8:24 and Jacob s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from his journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. John 4:6 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus himself was asleep. Matthew 8:24 Did Jesus get hungry and thirsty? Yes, Jesus got hungry and thirsty. Matthew 4:2 Matthew 21:18 And after he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he then became hungry. Matthew 4:2 John 19:28 Messiah Jesus Q&A 5 revised 3/29/18

Now in the morning, when he was returning to the city, he became hungry. Matthew 21:18 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, I am thirsty. John 19:28 Did Jesus know everything? Jesus did not know everything. He grew in wisdom and knew only what God revealed to him. Luke 2:40, 52 Matthew 24:36 The child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him... And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:40, 52 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. Matthew 24:36 Could Jesus die? Yes, Jesus died. All mankind is destined to die once. Luke 23:46, 52-53 John 19:30, 33-34 Hebrews 9:27 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, you re your hands I commit my spirit. Having said this, he breathed his last.... this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. Luke 23:46, 52-53 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished! And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.... but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. John 19:30, 33-34 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment. Hebrews 9:27 Messiah Jesus Q&A 6 revised 3/29/18

Who gave Jesus his power? God, his Father, gave Jesus his power. Matthew 28:18 John 8:28 Ephesians 1:22 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18 So Jesus said, When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught me. John 8:28 and He [God] put all things in subjection under His [Jesus ] feet, and gave him [Jesus] as head over all things to the church. Ephesians 1:22 What message did Jesus preach? Jesus s message was about the Kingdom of God and to repent for it was coming soon. Luke 4:18-19, 43 Luke 13:5 Acts 1:3 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppresses, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.... But he said to them, I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose. Luke 4:18-19, 43 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Luke 13:5 To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. Acts 1:3 Messiah Jesus Q&A 7 revised 3/29/18

Why did Jesus die? As a human, Jesus died. As the begotten Son of God, Jesus died to take away the sins of the world meeting the requirement of the Law by paying our debt for sin to the Father. Hebrews 9:27 Isaiah 53: 5, 6, 11 John 1:29 Mark 10:45 Romans 3:24-25 Romans 8:3, 4 2 Corinthians 5:21 Galatians 2:20, 3:13 1 Timothy 2:5-6 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment. Hebrews 9:27 But he was pierced through for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our wellbeing fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him.... As a result of the anguish of his soul, he will see it and be satisfied; by his knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, as he will bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53: 5, 6, 11 Titus 2:13-14 1 Peter 3:18 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 Being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in his blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed. Romans 3:24-25 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do Messiah Jesus Q&A 8 revised 3/29/18

not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:3, 4 So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:21 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.... Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us for it is written, cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree Galatians 2:20, 3:13 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good deeds. Titus 2:13-14 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that he might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit. 1 Peter 3:18 Messiah Jesus Q&A 9 revised 3/29/18

Did Jesus sin? Jesus did not ever sin. Hebrews 4:15 2 Corinthians 5:21 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one [Jesus] who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15 He made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21 How did Jesus pay sin s penalty? Jesus became the sacrifice to pay for sin by his death on the cross. Isaiah 53:5-7 Hebrews 7:27 Hebrews 9:15, 26b, 28a But he was pierced through for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our wellbeing fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him. He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so he did not open his mouth... As a result of the anguish of his soul, he will see it and be satisfied; by his knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, as he will bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:5-7, 11 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. Hebrews 7:27 (NIV) For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise Messiah Jesus Q&A 10 revised 3/29/18

of the eternal inheritance... but now once at the consummation of the ages he has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself... so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many. Hebrews 9:15, 26b, 28a How many days was Jesus dead? Jesus was dead three days. Matthew 12:40 Matthew 27:63 Mark 8:31 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:40 And said, Sir, we remember that when he was still alive that deceiver said, After three days I am to rise again. Matthew 27:63 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mark 8:31 What happened to Jesus three days after his crucifixion? Jesus rose from the dead three days after his death by crucifixion Matthew 28:5-6 Luke 24:6-7 Acts 2:32 1 Corinthians 15:20 The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, just as he said. Come, see the place where he was lying. Matthew 28:5-6 He is not here, but he has risen. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. Luke 24:6-7 This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. Acts 2:32 Messiah Jesus Q&A 11 revised 3/29/18

But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20 How long was Jesus on the earth after being resurrected? Jesus was on earth 40 days after resurrection. Acts 1:3 To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. Acts 1:3 What did Jesus teach and talk about after he was resurrection? Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God during the 40 days he was on earth after his resurrection. Acts 1:3 To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. Acts 1:3 What happened to Jesus 40 days after he was resurrected? Jesus ascended to heaven 40 days after his resurrection. Acts 1:9 And after he had said these things, he was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received him out of their sight. Acts 1:9 What did Jesus send after he ascended to heaven? After Jesus ascended to heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit from God. John 15:26 John 20:22 Acts 2:33 When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, it will testify about me. John 15:26 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:22 Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured forth this which you both see and hear. Acts 2:33 Messiah Jesus Q&A 12 revised 3/29/18

Where is Jesus now? Jesus is at the right hand of God in heaven Acts 7:55-56 Hebrews 10:12 But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. Acts 7:55-56 But he, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God. Hebrews 10:12 What does it mean that Jesus is mediator? Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant (agreement) between God and men and intercedes for mankind. 1 Timothy 2:5 Hebrews 7:25 Hebrews 8:6 Hebrews 9:15 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5 Therefore he [Jesus] is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Hebrews 7:25 But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. Hebrews 8:6 For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. Hebrews 9:15 Name 6 prophecies Jesus fulfilled. Isaiah 7:14 Luke 1:31, 34-35 Isaiah 9:1-2 Matthew 4:12-14, 23 Zechariah 9:9 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.... Mary said to the angel, Messiah Jesus Q&A 13 revised 3/29/18

Matthew 21:6-7 Isaiah 53:5 John 19:1, 16 Psalm 22:18 Matthew 27:35 Psalm 16:10 1 Corinthians 15:4 How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy child shall be called the Son of God. Luke 1:31, 34-35 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them. Isaiah 9:1-2 Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth, he came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet... Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. Matthew 4:23 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; he is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats Messiah Jesus Q&A 14 revised 3/29/18
