LOTS OF THINGS HAPPENING Lent is always a busy time in any parish. Of course, what is most important is the spiritual aspects of Lent. Some of you are making the effort to come to daily Mass whenever possible. Others are looking up the Lent readings in the bulletin and reflecting on them. Many of you are using the Little Black Book for daily reflection. Besides prayer, most of you are fasting from food, or something that you have too much of in your life such as internet or smart phone use. And many are busy with works of compassion or financial offerings to those in need. And I hope you, and those you live with, are doing something together for Lent. Renew My Church Our parish grouping, St. Barbara in Brookfield, St. Louise de Marillac in La Grange Park, Divine Providence in Westchester, and ourselves are a four parish grouping. We refer to ourselves as Westfield Park after our parish locations: WESTchester, BrookFIELD, and La Grange PARK. The representatives from our parish include myself, Deacon Jim Sponder, Rose Gutierrez, and Al Castillo. Representatives from our school include Len Gramarossa (School Principal), Peggy Perry, and Sermethia Houston. The pastors underwent three days of intensive preparation back in November. On February 3, we had an all-day intensive for the representatives of all the parishes in Wave 1 of Renew My Church. In addition our grouping met last Wednesday. Town Hall Meeting As part of Renew My Church we will have our first Town Hall Meeting this coming Wednesday, February 28 at 7:00. We will be talking about the future of our parish and our school. We need to find ways to collaborate with our neighboring parishes. With fewer priests and resources, we need to plan carefully for our future. It is my strong belief that the Holy Spirit speaks to us though the wisdom of ordinary parishioners. Decisions need to be made using a consensus model of shared wisdom. Please plan to be present this Wednesday at 7:00 in Langan Hall. Lenten Mission It is the custom of most parishes to have kind of a retreat or Mission every Lent. Our Renew My Church grouping has collaborated to have a shared mission this year. Dates, times, and places are listed elsewhere in today s bulletin. It starts this Tuesday at 7:00 at St. Barbara in Brookfield. Father Bob Casey will be the speaker. He is now the pastor of St Bede on Chicago s southside. From 2009 until 2016 he served as pastor at St. Barbara. I lived with him at St. Barbara during those years when I was Vicar and then Vicar Emeritus for Deacons. He is an outstanding priest and very good speaker. Now I recognize I am asking you to give up two evenings in a row for both the Mission on Tuesday, and our Town Hall on Wednesday. The first evening is for the good of your soul. It means driving an extra ten minutes to St. Barbara. The second is for the good of your parish. Please make the sacrifice and come to both nights if you are at all able. There is a lot more happening you can read about in today s Crown. I have written about what I consider the most vital. My prayer is that all we do will contribute to your good, and the good of our lives in Christ. May God continue to bless your Lent. Father Mike Ahlstrom Administrator of Divine Infant Jesus

VINCENT DE PAUL The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday concerns itself with what has become a traditional threepart Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in secret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to others is transforming and leads to a favorable outcome. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Parish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items that may be donated during each week of Lent. These are merely suggestions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts. Weekend of March 3-4: Canned meats, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, breakfast & granola bars, bottled 100% juice; cleaning supplies, laundry supplies Weekend of March 10-11: Pudding, jello; sandwich, quart & gallon zip bags, tall kitchen garbage bags, foil, plastic wrap, liquid dishwashing detergent Weekend of March 17-18: Coffee, drink mixes such as lemonade and hot chocolate, salad dressings, catsup, mayonnaise, pickles, olives; body lotions and/or oils, hand lotion Weekend of March 24-25: Creamettes, mac and cheese; hand sanitizer, bandaids, antiseptic cream/ spray, etc., toothbrushes, toothpaste DIVINE PROVIDENCE/DIVINE INFANT SENIOR (OVER 50) CLUB Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. LENT, 2018 LET S IMITATE JESUS Forget giving-up yummy things that you ll go back to anyway once Easter comes! How DID Jesus begin Lent? He went to the desert. So as children of the Father in Heaven, let s imitate our brother Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit where He wants to lead us instead of planning Lent for ourselves. As a DI COMMUNITY we will collect DIAPERS for the Lagrange Women s Shelter. Bring them to the RE Office any time during Lent. The annual Divine Infant Women s Guild Mother/ Son Bowling Event will be held on Saturday, March 3rd this year. A Raffle is a highlight of this event. Thanks to the generosity and assistance of people like you, many individuals and businesses participated in the success of last year s Raffle! Once again, our Women s Guild is hoping that you can help us with a donation that best reflects your company or business affiliation. Gift certificates and/or raffle items would be most appreciated. This fundraiser directly supports the educational needs of our students as well as maintenance and improvement of our school and church facilities. Due to funding reductions made statewide to private educators, our school relies on the kindness and generosity of others so that through fundraisers, we will be able to maintain and enhance our children s educational future. Funds raised by our Women s Guild may cover the cost of curricular activities such as music, computer technology and educational scholarships. This event reaches hundreds of women in attendance including our school, parish and community. Please help us achieve our fundraising goal! Thank you for your time. If you have any questions, please contact Jeanine Dent 708-681-1128. All donations are due February 27th. Thank you.
