April 15-16, 2017 Easter Luke 10:25-37; John 14:27 Celebrate Jesus! Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. You may have a lot of new kids, some of whom only attend church on Easter. Make an effort to welcome and get to know every single kid. Invite kids to join you or other kids in an activity/game the moment they step into the room. As kids leave, remind them to share their own versions of the Good Samaritan. ***Start Connect Time as soon as possible today. Because of how the adult service is set up, parents might be picking kids up early, on time, or late. So we want the lesson, including small group, to be done on time, and then you can keep kids engaged with the extra game options!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. IMAGINE IT Lay out a large piece of tear off paper and markers. Have kids draw the coolest place they can imagine! Encourage them to think of what it would look like, what fun things would be there, what people would be there...anything goes! It can be as imaginative and cool as they want it to be. They can make their own world, or work together to make a giant one. Have kids share some of the things they are creating. TALK ABOUT IT Why did you include certain things in your imagined world? What was the best/worst parts of your week? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of Jesus rescue, (2) recognize that Jesus rescue overcame death (so that it no longer separates us from God), and (3) understand that when we believe in Jesus rescue, we are a part of God s family. Why? We talk a lot about Jesus rescue. Today, we want to get really specific about what it means to believe that Jesus rescued us from death! Tip: Kids might ask hard questions. It s OK to say you don t know. Encourage them to ask their parents, read their Bibles, or ask God to show them! REVIEW THE STORY 1. Who needs to be rescued? Why? (We all make wrong choices and sin, so we deserve punishment. So we need a Rescuer to take our place and bring us close to God again.) 2. How did Jesus rescue/save us? (Got rid of death, which allows us to be part of God s family and one day spend forever with him. He died and rose again.) 3. Why did Jesus go through so much suffering, even death, for people who sin? (He loves us unconditionally and wants to be close to us forever, even if we mess up.) 4. How does it make you feel to know that Jesus wants to rescue you? 5. How can we accept Jesus rescue? (Believe He died for us, and follow him!) REPENTANCE ACTIVITY Give each kid one piece of dissolving paper Have kids write/draw one (or more) wrong things they've done on the paper One by one, have kids drop their paper into the bowl of water. As they watch the paper dissolve, say (kids name), Jesus rescued you! He took your punishment and got rid of it by coming back to life! Because of what Jesus did, you can be free from the wrong things you ve done and be part of God s family. CELEBRATE! Give each kid 1 plastic egg and a verse strip: Have one kid read it aloud, or read it as a group: Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is with you. He is mighty enough to save you. He will take great delight in you. The quietness of his love will calm you down. He will sing with joy because of you. Tell kids to cut the verse out (if they want), roll it up and put it in the egg to take home. It can be a reminder that Jesus overcame death to rescue us! (Activities continued on next page.)

EXTRA TIME OPTIONS End small group on a high note and play some fun games as parents come to pick kids up. (Because of the adult service running time, you may have parents picking kids up early, on time, or late. Expect it to be scattered, but try to keep kids engaged until the end!) Caught Red-Handed For this activity, you ll need two or three of the plastic eggs kids got in small group (Make sure they get their eggs back before they leave.) Have kids sit in a circle. One person stands in the middle of the circle and closes his/her eyes for a moment. Children who are in the circle begin to pass the eggs behind their backs, as sneakily as possible. They should also pretend to pass the eggs so that at all times students are either passing an object or faking a pass. The person in the middle opens his/her eyes and tries to figure out where the objects are in the circle. The person has three guesses, which should be made quickly. Would You Rather Have kids stand in the middle of an open area. Give them two choices, and then let them go to one side of the room if they prefer the first choice, or the other side of the room is they prefer the second choice. For example: Would you rather.be a musician, or a movie star? Would you rather.eat a worm, or a cockroach? Would you rather.swim in a pool full of jelly, or a pool full of peanut butter? Come up with as many as you want! **Note on the repentance activity: Be careful not to use language that makes assumptions about what s going on in kids hearts. This activity is designed to help them understand Jesus sacrifice and what it can mean for them, as well as give them an experiential way to make the choice to believe Jesus overcame the wrong things they ve done IF that is a choice/belief they are ready for. Extra time? Get some new tear-off paper out and have kids write down all the words that come to mind when they think about Jesus rescuing them and wanting to be close to them, even though we are broken and we all mess up and deserve punishment.

One goal of today is to help kids really understand what it means when we say Jesus rescued us. So we re talking a lot about the idea of a rescue. Here s today s story video: God s Story / Easter: https://vimeo.com/39716113 WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson. Notes: *Click to play intro music. Say: Hi everybody, welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see you here today. Did you have fun creating your perfect imaginary worlds in Connect Time? (Let kids respond.) Can you tell me some examples of things you included in your drawing? (Let several kids respond.) Say: Those worlds sound awesome! And today, we re going talk about how Jesus will one day recreate the most perfect and wonderful home we could ever imagine. It will be pretty different than the world we live in today, right? Why? Say: Yep. We live in a broken world. There s suffering, and hardship, and sadness. There s sickness, and sin and we all make wrong choices. And because of that, we need a rescuer who can overcome ALL of that. And today is the perfect day to talk about that rescuer, Jesus! Say: It s Easter, which is a time to CELEBRATE how Jesus rescued us from the broken world we live in. Now who can tell me, what does it mean to rescue someone? (Let kids respond.) Say: Yes, it means to save them, usually from something dangerous, or something that could hurt us. And during a rescue, the rescuer often goes into a scary situation that could hurt them, just to save somebody.

VIDEO: BOLT RESCUES MITTENS Main Goal: The kids will further develop the concept of a rescue, and the motivation behind it. WE LIVE IN A BROKEN WORLD Main Goal: The kids will imagine why they need a rescuer. ZEPHANIAH SPEAKS OF A RESCUER Main Goal: The kids will learn that God/Jesus loved us, and that is why He became our rescuer. Say: In the movie Bolt, we see this happen. A cat named Mittens gets caught by Animal Control, who put her into a cage! Even though Bolt could get caught himself, he goes into Animal Control to rescue her. Say: We re going to watch a clip of the rescue. As you watch, see if you can figure out WHY Bolt would go in to rescue Mittens. Video: Bolt Rescues Mittens Say: Woah, Bolt sure got lucky he didn t get caught! He was able to knock out the security guard and get away! Ask: But why do you think he risked his safety to get Mittens? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he must have liked Mittens! And if you watch the movie, you ll see, he wants her to come along on a journey with him. He wants to be with her. Say: So you know who else needs to be rescued? (Let kids respond.) You and me. See, we live in a world that s pretty scary sometimes. Close your eyes for a second. Give me a thumbs down if these things have happened to you: Thumbs down if you ve been sick. Thumbs down if you ve been injured. Thumbs down if someone has fun of you, or hurt you somehow. And here s a hard one: Thumbs down if you ve done something wrong, like lied or taken the best for yourself. (Pause.) Now open your eyes and look around (have your thumbs down for when they open eyes). Yep, every single one of us knows the world is full of wrong things and every single one of us has done wrong things. Including me. Say: The problem is, all those wrong things deserve punishment. And punishment separates us from God, because he s perfect. But God loves us WAY too much to leave us stuck in a broken world, separate from him. Say: Let s look at this verse to help us remember how much he loves us:

JESUS RESCUED US Main Goal: The kids will learn the end result of God s rescue was to be closer to them. THE GOSPEL Main Goal: The kids will understand the Gospel, and how Jesus became our rescuer so we could be closer to God. THE BEST PART (IMAGINE PART II) Main Goal: The kids will image the world after it has been re-made, and we get to live with Jesus. Slide: Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is with you. He is mighty enough to save you. He will take great delight in you. The quietness of his love will calm you down. He will sing with joy because of you. Say: God is mighty enough to save us. He sent his very own son, Jesus, to save us to rescue us. Jesus left his perfect home in Heaven to come live in this awful broken world. Then he took our punishment, even though he had never done anything wrong. Say: Jesus took the punishment for all the meanness and death and wrong choices in the world, so that we can be close to him. Say: Let s watch a video about Jesus rescue. As you watch, try to figure out WHY Jesus would be willing to take a punishment that should have been ours. Video: God s Story / Easter Say: Wow, Jesus was arrested, and went through so much pain, and killed just to rescue us. WHY would he do that? (Let kids respond.) Yes, because he loves us! And wants to be close to us. Say: Because of the wrong things we ve done, punishment (death) separated us from God. BUT when Jesus came back to life, he got rid of death! Say: Since Jesus is alive, we can tell him, I know I ve done wrong things, but I believe you took MY punishment! I want to follow you and be close to God. When we choose to believe that, we instantly become a part of God s family! (Loop: Blue Skies) Even though for now, we have to live in this imperfect, messed up, wrong world, there s good news! One day, God will re-create a new perfect world for his entire family and there won t be any wrong things. Say: Close your eyes and imagine THAT for a second: (let kids respond). People always treat us well, we re never tired, never sick, never hungry, never scared. Say: We re always happy and laughing and having fun. Even the weather is always perfect. And better yet, we ll get to live with Jesus!

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Kids actively respond to what they ve heard, and close the lesson with prayer and worship. Say: The only thing we need to do in all this? We need to accept that rescue. And it s really easy to do. Let s all close our eyes. I want you to think about how it feels when you re far away from God. (Wait few seconds before continuing.) Now think about how it feels to be close to God because Jesus has rescued you. If you want to accept that rescue, you can decide that right now. (Give kids a few more seconds of silence.) Alright, everybody open your eyes. Say: Right now, let s all pray together. As we do, I want you to think about the words I m saying, and if you agree, tell that to God silently! Tell him that you want to follow him, and be close to him forever. Pray: Jesus, thank you for rescuing us from the broken world we live in. Thank you for taking the punishment for our sins, so that we don t have to. We are all broken, and we need you. We want to follow you, and accept your rescue. Amen! Say: Now it s time to CELEBRATE! Because that s what Easter is all about: Celebrating Jesus because he rose from dead, and is alive today! And he wants to be close to us no matter where we are or what we do, or how much we mess up. Say: Let s worship Jesus and give him our LOUDEST singing voices possible! Music Video: Only Wanna Sing Music Video: You Are Dismiss kids to small groups.
