The entire passage is Jesus entrusting us to the Father. "When I was with them I protected them? I guarded them," Jesus says. He asks his Father, "Keep them in your name." In this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our life as Christians in the world. He anticipates struggle for the believer. He describes it in strong words, words that could even appear frightening to the believer. "I gave them your word, and the world hated them." Not only that, but with our eyes on eternal life, we "do not belong to the world." And yet in the midst of those realities, Jesus doesn't take us out of the world. On the contrary, "as you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world." Christians live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus often defies nice, neat categories. We uphold justice as virtue yet are invited to love our enemies. We offer gifts and generous hospitality to others while being reminded of the value of temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a Church that preaches moral perfection can easily fall under scrutiny when it falls short. In the midst of these complications, Jesus offers a message of hope. He is well aware of the contradictions into which he sends us, and his Father will equip us accordingly. "Consecrate them in truth." "Keep them from the evil one." Jesus does not abandon us to the tensions of our time but remains near at hand by the grace alive in his Church.

MAY 13, 2018 7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER PAGE 3 Motherhood For All Women Mothers, and those who serve in any mother-like capacity, are special people. It s no wonder that secular society sets aside a special day to honor them. Mothers are so important that even Jesus, Himself, entrusted us with a perfect mother, His very own. In the concept of motherhood, we find much more than just providing initial life through birth. In this concept, and in those persons who emulate it in their lives we find the very qualities of God nurturing, love, fidelity, guidance, forgiveness, compassion and mercy. Today, like every day, all of us should love, respect and cherish those qualities found in our mothers and many others whose role calls them to exercise these beautiful virtues. Today, we honor and pray for all those beautiful and wonderful women in our lives, who, by living those virtues of God, Himself, and molded so beautifully by our special Mother, Mary, have made our lives so much more meaningful. Mothers, and all those other wonderful women, may God bless you, may those you serve love and cherish you, and may the world, secular and religious, always respect and love you for the gift you are to all of us.
