NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 9, 2015 Pastor s Note August 8-August 15 Fill the Vacuum with the BREAD This Sunday s gospel lesson picks up where we left off last Sunday. I ended the last week s column quoting Blaise Paschal who said: "There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, and it can never be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God, made known through Jesus Christ." It s shaped in such a way that only God can fit in there. The crowd in today s gospel story is trying to alter the shape and fill it something else. They are looking for something different than what Jesus is offering. He is offering his own body. The greatest thing ever happened on earth is the body of Christ. God assumed a human body as Jesus. Jesus promised he would never take that body away from us (I will be with you until the end of time Mt. 28:20) In the Eucharist Christ offers his body to fill that vacuum. Victor Hugo tells us a story. In the aftermath of French revolution, a young mother and her two children found themselves among France s growing population of the homeless poor. They had wandered through the woods and fields for several days, living on roots, bulbs and whatever edible vegetation they could find. One morning, seeing that two soldiers were approaching, they hurriedly hid themselves in some nearby brushes. In their freight, the children could not be still, and soon their hiding place was exposed. One of the soldiers, a sergeant, prodded them into the open and brought the sad trio to his captain. Instantly the officer realized that they were on the verge of starvation. He offered them a little donut, which the mother eagerly accepted. At once she broke it into two pieces and gave a piece each to her children. As her children quickly ate the bread, the mother watched with quiet contentment shining in her eyes. Surprised at what he was seeing, the sergeant inquired of the captain, Is it because the mother is not hungry, Sir? The captain replied, No Sergeant, it is because she is a mother. Scripture Readings for NEXT Week Sunday, August 16, 2015 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading : Proverbs 9:1-6 Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Gospel Reading John 6:51-58 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2015 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. John 6:51 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In an age given to slogan T-shirts, one of the last bastions of dressing up is the wedding. Everyone seems to stretch toward the old ideal of Sunday best for these moments. In our tradition, clothing is immensely important. Coming out of the baptismal water, we are immediately vested with a white garment. You have clothed yourself in Christ, the new Christian is told, and a white garment is the token of being born into God s family. Sadly, this is the last time most Christians wear this garb until their funeral, when the family spreads a pall as a reminder of of baptismal identity. Increasingly today, we are seeing the alb as the proper garb for liturgical ministers, men and women. In ancient Rome, sleeveless tunics of varying colors were worn by everyone, and so at baptism the new Christians could be expected to wear their new garb under their everyday clothes. Sleeves were a problem for ancient Romans, who thought they were a barbarian fashion. As is so often the case, eventually the barbarians won the day, and by the third century the long-sleeved garment worn by ministers today was familiar liturgical garb Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. How do you interpret Pauls s advice to sing and play to the Lord in your heart? St. Vincent De Paul Society The weekend of August 29 th and August 30 th is Bundle Sunday. There will be a St. Vincent truck in the parking lot accepting denotations of clothes, small house hold appliances, TV, computers and electronic products. This is an opportunity to clean out the closet and garage. Donate your car to help those in need. Cars with dents can help pay rents 1-800-322-8284 Please tell the operator you are from St. Martin of Tours. St. Vincent de Paul News Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all those who continue to contribute to the St. Vincent de Paul Society collection. Through your generosity the society is able to meet the basic financial needs of some of our parish members who can't make ends meet in the Silicon Valley economy. However, to speed up the distribution process we ask that you make your checks "Paid to the Order" of St. Vincent de Paul, NOT St. Martin's Church. This will get the contribution in the hands of the society efficiently. Also, the volunteers who administer the distribution of funds is far understaffed and the numbers continue to shrink. We need more volunteers to help in the interview and distribution approval process. This is a rewarding and necessary opportunity to become a member of St. Martin's Pastoral Care Ministry and follow the Lord's commandment to help the poor. There is an excellent training program to make this as easy as possible and requires as little as one hour a week of your time. If interested, please call (408) 439-0342.
