FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE Dear Brothers and Sir Knights: The Lenten season is upon us and I pray everyone has a glorious Lenten season of fasting, prayer and almsgiving as we await Easter and He Is Risen! There will be many opportunities to practice our faith with soup suppers and Stations of the Cross and many other Parish Lenten activities. As many know the 2nd Thursday of the month evening meal is Knight s Night at The Community Kitchen (TCK) located in the Salvation Army building in Olympia. The majority of the crew are Knights and Knight s wives taking the opportunity to serve others and the meal is provided anonymously by a fellow Knight. This year Holy Thursday falls on the 2nd Thursday in March and we will serve a special meal that evening, a Knight s breakfast. We will be making and serving pancakes, hard boiled, decorated eggs, and ham. It has all the makings of a great meal as Sir Knight Keith Underwood will be doing the cooking! So if you re looking for an opportunity to give back this Lent and would like to check out TCK please give me a call. The 4th Degree Exemplification at Hallen Hall on Saturday 11 FEB turned out to be a well-attended and awesome event. The Honoree was our own Sir Knight Donald Robbins and his biography in the ceremonial hand out was truly amazing, interesting, and humbling. He s spent his life giving and doing for others, a man for all to emulate. Our Assembly was blessed with six new Sir Knights Tim Ahles, Ron Fiman, Tom Mitchell, Jim Robbins, Joe Scuderi, and Don Speiles. Our Assembly s Color Guard provide Row Captains represented by Color Corps Commander Korey Wessel, District Marshall Mike Colosi, Ron DeGroot, Karl Hoffman, and Manny Valez who performed flawlessly. The lunch was made possible by the efforts of Sam & Anthony Pellegrino, Dan Miller, and Ron DeGroot. Mike Colosi received a Patriotic Coin from the District Master, Don Speiles won a sword raffled off to one of the new Sir Knights, and Maxine Fiman won a beautiful ladies rosary. Thanks to all who helped make this event memorable, from planning, set up, tending bar, and especially clean up, you know who you are! Family of the Month for February 2017: Brother Ed and Dani Sauley The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Family of the month for February is Ed and Dani Sauley. General ED SAULEY FAMILY Brother Ed Sauley is an Honorary Life Member in the Knights. Ed and Dani Sauley have been involved in Pro- Life efforts for over 40 years. Married for 55 years, they have six children and thirteen grandchildren. They moved to the Seattle area in 1967 and were parishioners at St. Thomas Parish, Riverton. Upon moving to Olympia in 1977 they became actively involved and over the years held leadership positions in different ministries at Sacred Heart parish. All six children are college graduates. Four of their boys have served honorably in the armed forces. Three continue to serve at this time. Church In 1975, Ed Sauley served in the ministry of Master Catechist, commissioned by Archbishop Most Reverend Raymond Hunthausen to work in the formation of other catechists. This commission authorized Ed to carry on the ministry and at the same time challenged him to perform with care, joy, faith, and Eucharistic devotion. He has been instrumental in facilitating religious education classes and confirmation classes for youth & adult Catholics. Dani supported him with her time and talents in these efforts. In 1984/85, Ed and Dani completed the two year archdiocese and Seattle University course, A Call to grow, which encouraged them to become more involved in church and community activities. The following shows that they took this training very seriously. - Ed and Dani were very supportive and active at Holy Family School in Lacey, WA. In the late 70s and 80s. Dani was volunteer secretary and Ed served as a director. He has recently served as a H.F.S.board member. - Ed helped establish Boy Scout Troop 007 at Lacey s Sacred Heart Parish and became the boy s first scoutmaster. He was merit badge counselor for seven badges and archdiocesan religious emblems award chairman for the area. He was responsible for many scouts receiving their religious awards. All of his sons are Eagle Scouts having benefited from life and religious training by their parents. - In the early 90s, Ed was an executive member of the Seattle Archdiocesan Pastoral Council for the South Sound Deanery. Their input helped form the Mission Statement for the Archdiocese and provided valuable direction for the future. - Ed and Dani helped in the development of the Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Olympia. This was well known by their friend Archbishop Murphy who had Ed speak for him on pro-life issues. In 1995, Archbishop Murphy asked Ed to establish a respect life committee for the archdiocese. Ed became the first facilitator of the then newly established Archdiocesan Respect Life Committee. - In 2000, Seattle Archbishop Brunette officially thanked Ed for all his work with the archdiocese. - Ed and Dani continued their support of Olympia, WA s St. George Byzantine Catholic Church. They formally became Byzantine Catholics in 2000 as they continue their Pro-Life work. - Dani is Sacred Heart Parish s representative. to Pregnancy Aid which is located at St. Michael parish in Olympia, WA and is also the treasurer of that organization. - Ed has been a past president of Sacred Heart Parish s Holy Name Society and Past President of the Parish Council. Council The Sauley family has long been the Council 1643 Pro Life Family, and Pro Life representatives to St Michael and St. George parishes. They were directly involved in the Knights of Columbus memorials to the pre-born at those locations. At council meetings, Ed is a constantly reminding the membership of who they are and what they represent. Ed Page 16 of 20

gives great credit to council 1643 and all Knights of Columbus for being deeply involved with right to life and for walking the talk of Pro Life. Ed helps out at the Council level whenever possible, as a driver, a painter, and any other function that needs his assistance. He is a Jack of many trades and the council uses him accordingly. He has been on several committees to initiate or continue the good work of the Council 1643 in the Western Washington area. Ed is a 4 th Degree Knight, and has held the offices of Captain and Faithful Navigator. At a recent 4 th Degree exemplification, he was selected as the Guest Honoree for 2011! Sauleys and being assured of the value of life, many of them carried these lessons with them when they left and were welcomed back into their homes. This program is open to all, without religious prejudice of any kind, due to the benevolence and devotion to life of the Sauley family. The photograph below depicts the Sauleys offering aid and assistance to these young women in association with their Planned Parenting Pregnancy Aid. Dani and Ed with Norma McCorvey at the Knights of Columbus sponsoredpro life Conference "It's About Life" in the Tri-Cities. Ed and Dani Sauley at the 2011 4 th Degree Exemplification As Washington State Knights of the Columbus Pro-Life Co-Chairman (West Side), Ed s time is primarily spent representing the Knights as a beacon of hope in the promotion of the Gospel for Life. His activities and Dani s support carry him beyond the council chamber to focus on important Pro Life issues in the community and around the state. Dani and Ed are shown below with Norma McCorvey at the Knights of Columbus sponsored Pro life conference, "It's About Life" in the Tri-Cities area of Southern Washington. This was a tremendous event that highlighted the pro life movement in still another part of Washington State. Ed is also editor of the Human Life of Thurston County News Letter an informative publication designed to highlight local Pro Life activities and God s plan for prospective parents. Ed and Dani cooperatively established Shelter Home for Pregnant Teens, a program initiated by the Knights of Columbus. They have hosted approximately 15 teenage girls for periods as long as 4 months, during which those girls felt safe and secure and ultimately carried their babies to birth. Under the guidance of Dani and Ed, many other teens have realized that there are alternatives to abortion and have chosen life. Many of the teens come from distressed families and yet, after living with the Page 17 of 20 Pregnancy Aid Dani is treasurer of Pregnancy Aid (located at St Michael Parish in Olympia as well as being treasurer of Human Life of Thurston County and Show the Truth Washington State. Both Ed and Dani have both been involved with pro life activities for over 40 years. Talking with Dani, one can tell in her voice that she is a firm advocate for life and has passed this morality down to all of their children. Dani used to pull her children out of school for Pro Life marches, showing the importance and priority of this mission in their lives. Their daughter, Danielle, got started early in life in this mission by distributing roses to State Legislators on the day of the Capitol march. After that, Danielle was hooked on life!

The Sauley children, Danielle, Edward III, Eric, Michael, Marcus, and David are spread all over the country. Every Sauley child s family is also involved with the Pro Life movement after having been given the gift of life and Catholic upbringing by the Sauley s. Even the grandchildren are involved. Shown below are Sauley Grandchildren from Oregon being serenaded, outside of Planned Parenthood, by a very dear friend, Mel Paulson, RIP from Sacred Heart Parish in Lacey. from Archbishop Murphy thanking him for his efforts there. These activities prove that Ed, and his wife as well, were, and always have been, firm Pro Life advocates, carrying the banner for Knights all over the Nation. Ed and Dani have also been successful in recruiting other Knights to this cause as well as finding hope in places one might have never imagined. In the following photograph, Dani is shown counseling two young Christians who accepted her advice, evidence that the book s cover doesn t tell the whole story or how good the story may turn out with the right authors guided by a good agent! One grand-daughter is currently receiving a scholarship at a Catholic High School, in Portland, OR, for a first hand essay on My Experience in the Pro Life Arena. Another granddaughter, along with her parents, was responsible for raising $6000.00 via a Knights of Columbus Baby Bottle Campaign at their parish in Louisiana. The Sauley family ethic and devotion is indeed spread widely! Ed and his whole family work in support of the annual Mass for Life at St. Martin s Pavilion and the March for Life at our state's capitol in Olympia, WA, and are very much involved in the Knights of Columbus Pro-Life Luncheon at St. Michael Parish, in Olympia, following the march. Ed is a leader with the "It's about Life Conference" which invites prominent speakers to promote the Gospel of Life. Ed was responsible for bringing Priests for Life s Fr. Frank Pavone to the It's about Life Conference in Puget Sound. Dani is shown below with Janet Moreno of Priests for Life and guest speaker, Fr Frank Pavone. As a student of the use of visual images in bringing about cultural change, Ed and Dani were able to formally established Show the Truth Washington State, a 501c3 nonprofit organization which travels to colleges and universities, witnessing to the horrors of abortion. In the early 90s, Ed was actively involved with Operation Rescue in the Northeast, US. He is very proud of a letter Conclusion Dani just doing her thing! Ed and Dani and their entire family have made Pro Life the principal focus of their life s work. As can be said of the Knights of Columbus, Ed and Dani do indeed walk the talk. Ed and Dani have spent their lives training their own children and other people to respect life and have given countless, selfless hours to the concept that we should respect life at every stage of its existence. In these times where the value of life, from conception to natural death, is being questioned, it is difficult to see where any other life s vocation could be as important as that undertaken by the Sauley family. It is surely fitting and proper that the Knights of Columbus honor the Sauley family in selecting them as the National Knights of Columbus Family of the Year 2011. Thank you, Brother Ed and Dani, for all that you continue to do, and congratulations on being selected as our Family of the Month for February. Note: Recently, Ed is having a little heart problem and is very appreciative of all the prayers of his fellow Knights. He says because of them he is still looking at the right side of the grass! Thanks again! Page 18 of 20

Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive guaranteed sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember absolute safety of principal) really will provide you with peace of mind. A Knights of Columbus Agent is happy to meet with you at your convenience and in your home to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans.
