PASTORAL BLOG Are You Keeping Your Vow? By Pastor Errol Lawrence All of us have at sometime or other vowed to do something. For many it was the baptismal. Others repeated wedding vows. But what is a vow? A vow is a solemn promise one makes to God either to do something or to abstain from certain actions. The Hebrew word nadar means "to separate from profane use; to consecrate to God." When we make a vow to God it is an act of worship. So according to Romans 12:1, when you "offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God,--this is your spiritual act of worship." It behooves us therefore, to care for our bodies and make sure they are pure and undefiled. A vow to return our tithes and free will offerings is also an act of worship. Jacob promised God that if God protected him on his journey from Bethel to Haram and brought him back safely he would faithfully return a tithe, a tenth part of what God had granted him. ( Genesis 28:20-22; 31:13) Jephthah's vow was that if God gave him victory over the Ammonites he would sacrifice to God whoever first came out of his house to greet him. It so happened that this turned out to be his daughter. Although griefstricken, Jephthah fulfilled his vow (Judges 11:30-39). It is important to beware or rash vows. In the New Testament the Greek word euche is mentioned twice. Paul used the term in Acts 18:18 and in Acts 21:23-26). But these seem to refer to Christians who were consecrating themselves to God for sometime. Jesus advises us not to swear at all but to let our YES be YES and our NO be NO. Are you keeping your vow? What blessings are you receiving from being faithful to your vows such as keeping the Sabbath holy? Returning a faithful tithe and free will offerings through the Systematic Benevolence plan? Caring for your body, God's temple? Sharing your faith and leading others to Jesus as you promised in Baptismal Vow #7? Caring for the environment? Being good stewards of your time and talents. God has blessings in abundance in store for those who faithfully keep their vows. God is faithful. God honours those who honour Him. (1Samuel 2:12-36). Are you keeping your vows? 8 ANNOUNCEMENTS Apr 6-12 Apr 6 Apr 12 Apr 12 Apr 14 Apr 18,19 Apr 26 Apr 26 Apr 30 May 2-4 May 10,11 May 12 May 16-18 May 17 May 23-25 May 24 May 30,31 May 31 Jun 14 Jun 14 Jun 20-22 Jun 28 Jul 7-12 Jul 20 Bible Reading: Deut. 15-21.
