Holy Spirit Catholic Church November 4, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk A favorite topic in the business world these days seems to be how to achieve success. There have been a lot of books and articles written giving out wise advice on how to make it big in the world of business. They give all kinds of advice, from how to do market research, to scheduling your time, to what computer system you might need in order to handle your business requirements. But besides all of the details of marketing, investing, business plans and so forth, there is one overriding thing that a person must do in order to achieve success in business. The one necessary thing is to be focused. You have to concentrate your energies on achieving your goals. You have to see to the heart of what you want to do, and then concentrate all of your efforts at moving towards that objective. The same thing applies to playing music or being good at sports. If you lose your focus, then you won t do very well at whatever you are trying to achieve. And, yes, the same thing applies to living. If we want to be good at life, we need an undivided heart. That is the very strong message that Jesus gives to us today. His recipe for success is very simple and very demanding love. Love with everything you have within you your whole heart, mind, soul and strength. Anything less won t get you very far. We need to develop an undivided heart. A divided heart can be the ruin of any one of us. And our world is full of distractions trying to gain our attention. Every time we turn around, someone or something wants our attention. And of course, some things deserve our attention. We need to pay attention to people and situations if we are to love as Jesus asks us to. We can t pretend that we are living on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. We live in the world, among people and things. And so, that is where we are to love. But we cannot do everything, be everywhere and know everyone. Our natural limitations demand that we constantly make choices about where we are going to give our time, energy, and attention. Too many wrong choices about this kind of thing can lead to disaster. The first movement towards an undivided heart is to have the courage and the wisdom to set limitations. It sounds kind of strange to say that the way to be totally loving is to, first of all, know when to step back from people and things, but that is how things are. If we are to love God and others, we need to be focused and pay attention. The musician who cannot tear himself away from distractions will never be a good musician. He will just stay at the level of being an average player, instead of a great one. Just as the musician needs to practice her music and as the business man needs to stick to his business plan, so the Christian needs to pray. Without prayer, life can quickly lose its center. Distractions can move in, and once again take over our heart. In order to keep an undivided heart, we need to return again and again to the sources of our love God. Both our private and community prayers are life-giving sources of encouragement and refreshment. The weekend of November 3-4, 2018, is part four of our series which seeks to bring greater understanding and awareness to six Themes of Stewardship: Prayer, Service, Faith, Vocations, Generosity, and Earth. Stewardship begins with gratitude to God for everything we have received from Him. THEME FOUR: VOCATIONS Parents: Talk to your children about the importance of discovering God s purpose in their lives. Talk about the three states of life considered vocations (married life, single life, consecrated life) and let them know that considering becoming a priest or consecrated religious is a noble thing. Share your own story of how you came to know that you were called to the vocation of married life. Pray as a couple for the specific vocation of each one of your children. As a family: Send thank you cards and birthday cards to priests (have kids make them). Have them over (or take them out) for dinner to get to know them. Pray regularly for clergy for the priests and deacons in your parish and those throughout the universal Church. The Called by Name program reflects the Second Vatican Council s vision that all of God s Faithful people share responsibility for calling forth and fostering vocations to the priesthood, permanent diaconate, and religious life. Do you know an individual who may be called to a vocation as a priest, deacon or religious man or woman? If so, nominate them to your parish pastor.
