Cover Art Christ Healing Peter s Mother-in-Law by Rembrandt Today from the life of the church [Writing about his conversion] In that very moment, from the absolute bottom of my soul there came together like a knot in my heart all of my past struggles and present arguments, and it caused me to break into tears. So that I would not embarrass anyone and so I could let myself go completely, I left Alypius [one of his closest friends, later bishop of Thagaste]. He knew what was happening and let me go by myself. I found myself in a garden and collapsed there under a tree, sobbing like a baby and babbling about my worthlessness...as I was carrying on, suddenly I heard from somewhere a voice like a child s saying softly, over and over, Pick it up and read it. My confused mind cast about, trying to remember if these were the words to some game that children play, but I couldn t think of any. I got control of myself and stood up. I decided that this was a direct answer from God, directing me to take up His Holy Scripture and to read the first chapter that I opened to...quickly I raced back to where Alypius sat amd seized the Epistles of St. Paul which I had left there. Opening it, I read to myself the first words that came to my eyes [Romans 13:13]: Not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying: but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh in concupiscence. I did not need to go on; as soon as I finished that one sentence perfect truth filled my heart; confusion and doubt were gone forever. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo

Gathering of God s People Prelude Greeting and Welcome The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you. And also with you. *Call to Worship Have we not known? Have we not heard? Has it not been told to us since the beginning? Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles; They shall run and not be weary; They shall walk and not faint. *Opening Prayer Let us pray. Powerful God, from the very beginning you blessed creation. You have loved and shielded your people through all joys and trials of life. We come to you today, rejoicing in the many blessings you have given. We open our hearts again to hear your word and to gather strength and joy for service in your world. Be with us and bless us again, we pray. Amen. *Opening Hymn #482 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty 3

Prayer of Confession Let us pray. Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others, we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Declaration of Forgiveness Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. *Song of Praise Gloria *Passing the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Children s Time 4

Prayer for Illumination Holy God, speak to us what has been told from the beginning, your Word that is the foundation of the world. Amen. Proclaiming the Good News Scripture Isaiah 40:21-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Psalm 147:1-11,20c Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God! How pleasant it is to honor God with praise! The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem, and gathers the exiles of Israel. The Lord heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. The Lord counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; there is no limit to God s wisdom. The Lord lifts up the lowly, but casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make music upon the harp to our God, Who covers the heavens with clouds and prepares rain for the earth, making grass to grow upon the mountains. God provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they cry. God is not impressed by the might of a horse, and has no pleasure in the speed of a runner, But finds pleasure in those who fear the Lord, in those who await God s steadfast love. Hallelujah! 6

Scripture 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God s law but am under Christ s law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Special Music Simple Gifts arr. John Coates, Jr. 7

*Gospel Mark 1:29-39 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ. Sermon *Hymn Craig Jan-McMahon #394 There Is a Balm in Gilead 8

Responding to the Good News Pastoral Prayer Offering Our Gifts Invitation Let us give thanks to God by giving our tithes and offerings. Offertory *Doxology Praise God From whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Prayer of Dedication Merciful God, receive the gifts we bring, our selves, our time, and our possessions. Through our worship and service unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. 9

Invitation Communion Prayer The Sacrament of Holy Communion The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is right to give thanks and praise. Eternal God, who has created the heavens and the earth, giving breath to every living thing, we thank you for all the gifts of creation and for the gift of life itself. We thank you for making us in your own image, for forgiving us when we act as though you have no claim on us, and for keeping us in your steadfast care. We rejoice in Jesus Christ, the only one eternally begotten by you, who was born of your servant Mary and shared the joys and sorrows of life as we know it. We remember Christ s death, we celebrate Christ s resurrection and, in the beloved community of your church, we await Christ s return at the end of history. We take courage from the abiding presence of your Holy Spirit that gathers us together as your Church. With all the prophets, martyrs, and saints, and all the company in heaven, we glorify you. Amen. Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. 10

Prayer of Consecration and Our Lord s Prayer Consecrate, therefore, by your Holy Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine, and bless us that as we receive them at this table, we may offer you our faith and praise, we may be united with Christ and with one another, and we may continue faithful in all things. Let us pray as Christ our Savior has taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Breaking Bread and Pouring Wine Through the broken bread we participate in the body of Christ. Through the cup of blessing we participate in the new life Christ gives. Sharing the Elements The bread is eaten when served; the wine is held to be taken together. Grape juice is clear; wine is red. *Unison Prayer of Thanksgiving Let us pray, We affirm the goodness of life and the openness of the future because our God is a God of life and love. As God comes to us in this act of communion with one another, let us go out to others in Jesus name. May our every prayer be an action that brings healing, reconciliation and hope to a broken and hurting world. Amen 11

Sending in Mission *Hymn of Sending #399 We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight *Benediction May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord s face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen *Postlude Alter flowers given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Corinne Potter Given by: Ellen McBride The Rosebud on the altar is given in celebration of the birth of Jacob Kellen Henning grandson of Bill and Nancy Henning 12
