The Protestant Reformation!! -- In the 1500 s, the Renaissance sparked religious upheaval! -Affected Christians at all levels of society -- Uncertainty for most people -Economy changing from feudalism to market economies Violence was common Wealth inequality was enormous -- Humanism, Education, a spirit of SOCIAL REFORM!!! -People began to question The Catholic Church Martin Luther We abouta change this game son

Church Abuses -- Beginning in The Late Middle Ages, The Church had become increasingly more engaged in worldly (secular) affairs --- Popes competed for political power -And Lived lavish lives ($$$) High fees for baptisms and marriages You made me go and do it, it's on like donkey kong -- INDULGENCES -Some clergy sold Indulgences Money in exchange for The Church telling you that you would spend less time in purgatory after death

Martin Luther: Man of Change! -- In 1517, protests against The Church erupted into straight up revolt!! -German monk and professor of Theology: Martin Luther leads the charge Also translates The Bible into German! Martin Luther Goes into beast mode!!! Catholic Church 1517

The 95 Theses -- In 1517 A priest named Johann Tetzel set up a pulpit on the outskirts of Wittenberg, Germany He offered indulgences to any Christian who contributed money for the rebuilding of the Cathedral of St. Peter in Rome. Tetzel claimed that buying one would assure entry into heaven not just for the purchaser, but for their dead relatives as well! -- Luther nails his beef with the church to the door of the local Catholic Church -95 problems and the church is all of them Pope excommunicates and demands him to take it back LUTHER REFUSES!!!

Luther s Teachings -- His ideas spread rapidly, and many Europeans joined his cause -His teachings were 1) All Christians have equal access to God through faith and the Bible 2) All Christians should be able to read the Bible, so he translated parts of it into German and pushed for all people to be taught to read 3) He banned indulgences, confession, pilgrimages, and prayers to saints. Permitted the clergy to marry!

Luther Lets Down the Peasants of Europe As much as Luther demanded and catalyzed spiritual reform He was not in favor of social reforms In 1524, many peasants saw The Protestant Reformation as a chance to change the harsh economic system that gave them such miserable lives Peasants revolted, and it became more and more violent! Luther denounces the revolt, and helps to suppress it. Tens of thousands of European peasants are brutally killed, the revolt fails ( 9:53-11:00)

What is a peasant??? An agricultural laborer. Sometimes locked to the land via a feudal contract. In other instances free, but pays rent to the landlord.

The Peace of Augsburg During the 1530 s and 1540 s, Charles V, The Holy Roman Emperor, tried to force Lutheran princes back into The Church He Failed! But! In 1555, The Peace of Augsburg was signed. It allowed Each prince to decide which religion -- Catholic or Lutheran -- would be followed in his lands!!!

Calvinism and Wars of Religion -- In 1536 the French born John Calvin published a widely-read book.
