A New Wind Scott Hahn Reflects on Pentecost Sunday The giving of the Spirit to the new people of God crowns the mighty acts of the Father in salvation history. The Jewish feast of Pentecost called all devout Jews to Jerusalem to celebrate their birth as God s chosen people in the covenant Law given to Moses at Sinai (see Leviticus 23:15 21; Deuteronomy 16:9 11). In today s First Reading, the mysteries prefigured in that feast are fulfilled in the pouring out of the Spirit on Mary and the Apostles (see Acts 1:14). The Spirit seals the new law and new covenant brought by Jesus, written not on stone tablets but on the hearts of believers, as the prophets promised (see Jeremiah 31:31 34; 2 Corinthians 3:2 8; Romans 8:2). The Spirit is revealed as the life-giving breath of the Father, the Wisdom by which He made all things, as we sing in today s Psalm. In the beginning, the Spirit came as a mighty wind sweeping over the face of the earth (see Genesis 1:2). And in the new creation of Pentecost, the Spirit again comes as a strong, driving wind to renew the face of the earth. As God fashioned the first man out of dust and filled him with His Spirit (see Genesis 2:7), in today s Gospel we see the New Adam become a life-giving Spirit, breathing new life into the Apostles (see 1 Corinthians 15:45, 47). Like a river of living water, for all ages He will pour out His Spirit on His body, the Church, as we hear in today s Epistle (see also John 7:37 39). We receive that Spirit in the sacraments, being made a new creation in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15). Drinking of the one Spirit in the Eucharist (see 1 Corinthians 10:4), we are the first fruits of a new humanity fashioned from out of every nation under heaven, with no distinctions of wealth or language or race, a people born of the Spirit. Altar Rosary Our Blessed Mother requests that we pray the Rosary and that we pray it often. For more information on the Altar Rosary Society, please contact Debbie Caldwell at 845-928-7681. Adult Bible Study Our next session will be on Thursday, May 31st. We will continue to study Genesis from where we left off at the last session. We will meet from 7:30 to 9:00 P.M. in Room 8 of the Religious Education Building. Wednesdays, 6:30pm 7:30pm: Open Speaker Meeting (Everyone is welcome.) Speaker will share their experience, strength and hope. Emmaus Ministry Retreat for Grieving Parents The response to the Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents Retreats has been great. After conducting five retreats, the ministry continues to expand and bear fruit within our Archdiocese. To meet the spiritual needs of parents whose children of any age have died by any cause no matter how long ago the Family life Office, in collaboration with the Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents (www.emfgp.org), is offering two more retreats in 2018 for parents. Our experience is that the grieving parents who attended found that the spiritual retreat exceeded their expectations. Our last, Englishspeaking retreat for 2018 is scheduled for October 20, 2018, in Manhattan. For our Spanish speaking population, the retreat will be on April 28th, 2028 at St. Peter/St. Mary of the Assumption in Haverstraw. If you would like to discuss this program further, please contact Sue DiSisto, our Parenting/Family Life Coordinator at 646-794-3191 or via email at susan.disisto@archny.org United in Love United in Christ" Marriage Enrichment Announcing more Marriage Enrichment at St Pat s on the first Sunday of each month at 6 PM! The feedback from the more than 40 couples who just completed The Choice Wine Marriage Enrichment Journey was wonderfully positive. But the most common request was More! More! This program has incredibly inspiring videos from REAL couples, sharing their journeys and calling us to the Joy God wants for our Marriages. You will have private time with your spouse, and small group time that you will LOVE. The only cost is $20 for two workbooks to last the rest of the year! Treat yourselves to JOY!! Although the Eucharist appears to be simple bread and wine, it is, actually, the source and summit of the Christian life. Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist explores the truth and beauty of Christ s real presence in the Eucharist, from its origins in Sacred Scripture to its profound role in the life of the Church and its members. The Eucharist is the crescendo of the entire story of salvation. The Eucharist doesn t just have a Catholic identity. It has a biblical identity. Join us in a diocesan-wide study of the Eucharist called Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist to learn about the origins of the Eucharist in Sacred Scripture and to understand more deeply why It is the source and summit of our Faith. 90 Minute Sessions: Week One: God is With Us Week Two: The Story of the Eucharist Week Three: Bread for the Journey St. Patricks Church: Saturdays at 9:30am May 19th, 26th & June 2nd Sacred Heart Church: Sundays at 1:30pm May 20th, 27th & June 3rd St. Anastasia s Church: (Spanish) Wednesdays at 7:00pm May 23rd, 30th & June 6th Weekly Adoration Hour Sacred Heart Church 26 Still Road Monroe, NY Do you need some Peace, someone to talk to, a place to relax and leave the world behind for a while? Our Lord instructed His Apostles to Stay Awake with Him One Hour. If you have never come to Adoration, it is a time to Adore Jesus in the Eucharist, spend time with Him in a very intimate way, speak to Him, and most importantly in these busy days, it is a time to just sit in silence, to let Him speak to you, guide you, and love you! There are 2 weekly opportunities at Sacred Heart in Monroe Wed 8-9 a.m., and Fri 8-9 p.m. No need to bring anything, or know what to do, etc. Just come sit with Him and feel His Peace. He awaits you. (You do not need to stay the full Hour if you cannot, or have children with you etc.) They also offer a 7:30 p.m. Mass every First Friday, followed by Nocturnal Adoration 8 p.m. Fri thru 9 a.m. Mass Saturday morning. It is ideal to have 2 people present each Hour overnight, but there are times we only have one, due to illness etc., so if you would like to sign up for an Hour, or be placed on a substitute list, please contact Eileen Collopy (845) 774-8584.
