Call to Worship The Scriptural call to worship at the beginning of our service is a reminder that, as we gather, it is God who initiates and reveals Himself to us through His Word, and we respond to Him. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1:3 4 Corporate Confession During this time we acknowledge that we have sinned against a holy God, and we have the assurance that, because of Christ, we have been forgiven and are blessed recipients of God s mercy, grace and love. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4 6 Offering Giving is an act of worship in which we give generously of our substance to further the mission of the church and to bring glory to God. 3

Palm Sunday Why should I emphasize Palm Sunday in my home? The most important week in world history is the week leading up to Jesus death and resurrection. During this week, God set into motion what would change our lives forever. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of this week, and its message is one you and your family should know. Here s why: 1. Palm Sunday teaches us to worship Christ for who He says He is. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people shouted with great joy because they thought He was coming to free them from Roman rule. They worshipped Him for the wrong reason. Similarly, it is easy for us to worship Christ as King as long as He meets our every demand. This Palm Sunday, help your children see that they must worship Christ for who He says He is, not what they want Him to be. 2. Palm Sunday teaches us that Jesus death was no accident. When Jesus entered into Jerusalem, He knew what He was doing. By riding into town on a donkey, He declared Himself to be the king prophesied in Zechariah, provoking the religious leaders to call for His crucifixion. The cross was no accident. It is easy for children to think that Jesus didn t want to die but ended up being killed anyway. This Palm Sunday, help your children see that Jesus death was no accident Jesus understood what was coming and embraced it so that you and I might be reconciled to God. How can I teach my child more about Palm Sunday? As a parent, God has called you to be the primary disciple-maker in your child s life. Here are three ways you can teach your child more about Palm Sunday: 1. Read the Bible story together. All four gospels record this story (Matthew 21:1 17, Mark 11:1 11, Luke 19:29 40, John 12:12 19). Pick one or a few and read them together. 2. Talk about why Jesus would willingly die for us. Ask your children why and help them see how amazing His love is for undeserving people like you and me! 3. Pray together. When you pray together, let your children hear you thank God not just for material blessings but for sending Christ. 4

Palm Sunday for Kids What is Palm Sunday? The Sunday before Jesus died on the cross, He and His disciples were traveling back to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. The people of Jerusalem had seen and heard of Jesus mighty works and believed He was the promised Messiah who would save them from their Roman rulers. As you might expect, they were excited He was coming into town! However, Jesus was not the King or Savior they were expecting. Jesus would not save Israel by overthrowing the Roman government. He would save them by dying for their sins. This was not the kind of King they expected. would He do this? Well, the prophet Zechariah many years earlier prophesied, Your king is coming to you humble and mounted on a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9) As He entered Jerusalem, the people began to honor Him by spreading their robes on the road along with palm branches. This is why it is called Palm Sunday. With great joy, the crowd was shouting: Hosanna! (Which means Save us now! ) Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! On Palm Sunday, we remember that Jesus is the Savior of the world who intentionally came to die for sinners like you and me. To demonstrate that He was the Savior promised in the Bible, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Why REVIEW: 1. On Palm Sunday, Jesus was traveling to. 2. To fulfill Zechariah s prophecy, Jesus rode on a. 3. In excitement, the people shouted Hosanna! as Jesus entered the city and spread on the road their robes and. The New City Catechism The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith using 52 questions and answers. Learn more at NewCityCatechism.com. Part 1: God, Creation & Fall, Law QUESTION 13 Can anyone keep the law of God perfectly? Since the fall, no mere human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly, but consistently breaks it in thought, word, and deed. None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. Romans 3:10 12 PRAYER Holy God, left to our own devices, we transgress your law at every turn. We have no defense, but must plead guilty before your throne of judgment. Your law condemns us and cuts through our pretensions to righteousness, convincing us that we desperately need a Savior. Amen. Read the full commentary for this question at NewCityCatechism.com. 9
