Father John s forum Receive The Holy Spirit Pentecost is a great day in the Church s life. It is a celebration of Jesus gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church and to each of the baptized. Today we recall the powerful events in Jerusalem on that first Pentecost Sunday. Before then, the disciples were frightened behind locked doors. On Pentecost, the doors were opened as they received the Holy Spirit in a drama of wind and flame and are suddenly unified by mission and purpose. They become confident and courageous. That Holy Spirit has remained within the Church. St. Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit is given to the Church and to each individual Christian as well. Frequently, when we think of the work of the Holy Spirit, we select the extraordinary gifts of the Spirit such as people speaking in tongues and being gifted with healing or grand inspirations. There are also the ordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit that we can easily overlook. These are the gifts that bring inner healing to the broken soul, the gifts of the Holy Spirit that enable us to forgive, to have the power to be faithful to our promises and vows, the Spirit that can bring us back to a living faith, a renewed trust in God, the gift of the Holy Spirit that enables us to pray sincerely, honestly, powerfully. The Holy Spirit is for every life and for every age a source of renewal. Over and over, people have found their lives in a rut, at a dead end, ad as they turn to the Holy Spirit, new avenues open, their vision restored, they receive the courage for a new start as they are renewed in the Lord. (Fr. S. Joseph Krempa, Captured Fire, 2005) O Holy Spirit, descend into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there thy cheerful beams. -St. Augustine The Holy Spirit Our Advocate and Guide As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, it is a good time for us to revisit the role of the Holy Spirit in our life and in the life of the Church: It is through the Holy Spirit that Jesus continues his work of salvation. It is the mission of the Spirit to fill us with God s presence, so that we can be elevated in grace and truly become adopted children of our heavenly Father. If we are to be in touch with Christ, we must first have been touched by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a person of the Blessed Trinity, truly and eternally God. He is the Paraclete, the counselor that Christ promised the Apostles would be given to be with you forever (John 16:16). The Spirit is sent by the Eternal Father and by Jesus to give us light, comfort, and strength, and to stir up within us a newness of life. The Spirit seals our friendship with God and unites us with one another by the divine love that the Spirit pours into our hearts. The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church. The ancient symbol of the Holy Spirit is the dove and the liturgical color is red. QUESTIONS TO PONDER: 1. When do you feel the peace of the Holy Spirit? 2. How does the power of the Holy Spirit transform you? A Few Thoughts Pentecost Sunday The Church Evangelizing! Have you read Bishop Zubik s new Pastoral Letter? The Church Evangelizing!, was released last month and is the Bishop s fourth pastoral letter. It describes how Jesus made friends with the disciples: by speaking their language, joining in their activities, sharing meals, taking long walks with them, being in their homes, listening to their worries, praying with them and by being a friend. The Church Evangelizing!, acknowledges that although Pope Francis captivates large crowds in St. Peter s Square, there are many more people he simply cannot reach. They are the ones you see day after day in your homes, neighborhoods and offices. They are the people you can lead to Jesus Christ. The Church Evangelizing! is more than a letter, it is a movement. It is a movement to be better friends. It is a movement to be a closer friend to Jesus and to introduce our friends to Him. It is a movement to be The Church Alive! in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. I invite you to visit www.churchevangelizing.com for more information on this letter. Special Prayers Please pray for the following seminarians of the Diocese of Pittsburgh who will be ordained transitional deacons on June 14 at St. Paul Cathedral: Jack Demnyan, Zachary Galiyas, Levi Hartle, Christopher Mannerino, Jeremy Mohler, David Rombold, and William Wuenschel. As transitional deacons, these men are preparing for the priesthood for our diocese in the next 1-2 years. May the Holy Spirit bless and guide them! Bazaar 2014 We have moved another month closer to our annual Bazaar! Once again, we are asking everyone to help make our Bazaar a special event not only for the parish, but for the local community. Think about volunteering for a few hours, donate a few items for the Chinese Auction (a special container is located in the coat room), help with set-up or tear-down. There are so many things that one can do to help us celebrate this annual event. Raffle tickets and volunteer cards will be appearing soon! Our Bazaar will be on Sunday, August 10. Mark your calendars and plan to be a part of this wonderful gathering! Thank You Special thanks to everyone for your prayers and cards during my hospital stay. I greatly appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness. May God bless you for your Christ-like love and concern for others. May you have a wonderful week filled with the joy of the Risen Christ, Fr. John Gizler

This weekend, the church recognizes Saturday, May 31 as the Feast of the Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth. The Elizabeth Ministry is a vital ministry for the church, to be with women and their families during the blessed event of having a child, but also for those struggling with fertility issues, miscarriage and going through adoption. Please help keep this ministry alive by contacting us when you or a family member are expecting, or going through any of the above issues. After a baptism is scheduled with the parish office, the Elizabeth Ministry will contact you about providing a prepared meal and gift basket to celebrate the birth of your child.
