CONCORDIA S PURPOSE To Make the Love of Jesus R.E.A.L. in the Lives of All People PRELUDE LENTEN MIDWEEK WORSHIP 2 March 4, 2015 7:00 p.m. LENTEN MIDWEEK WORSHIP THEME More Than a Feeling! Love is Kind 1 WELCOME HYMN #435 Come to Calvary s Holy Mountain OPENING VERSICLES P: This is the day, which the Lord has made; C: let us rejoice and be glad in it. P: From the rising of the sun to its setting, C: the name of the Lord is to be praised. P: Return to the Lord, your God, for He is gracious and merciful, C: slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil.
P: Jesus said: If any man would come after Me, C: let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. P: Christ was wounded for transgressions. C: He was bruised for our iniquities. P: From the rising of the sun to its setting, C: the name of the Lord is to be praised. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. LSB 2 HYMN #535 How Wide the Love of Christ OLD TESTAMENT READING Micah 6:6-8 R: A reading from Micah, chapter six. 6 With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 3 EPISTLE READING 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 R: A reading from 1 Corinthians, chapter thirteen. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love bide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. R: This the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
HYMN #433 Glory Be To Jesus 4 GOSPEL READING Luke 6:27-35 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to you O Lord. 27 But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic [a] either. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. 32 If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. (After the reading ) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you O Christ. RESPONSORY P: We have an advocate with the Father; Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people.
P: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people. P: We have an advocate with the Father; Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people. CATECHISM Ten Commandments C Creed C You shall have no other gods. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor s house. You shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, 5
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. 6 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
