The group, led on Thursday evenings by Francesca Riley, recently completed many weeks of making caps for newborn babies; which they then donated to the Birthing Centre at the Lakeshore General Hospital, for their newborn babies. English as a Second Language (ESL) - Teachers Needed We are hoping to launch our new season of classes, soon. However, we need more teachers in order to be ready then we can advertise to the community, and register students. The ESL ministry runs on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm. ESL provides a safe learning environment where students (many of whom have recently immigrated to Canada) can build English grammar and conversation skills, as well as the confidence to navigate everyday interactions. ESL thus enables them to have broader social interactions, to participate more confidently in the community around them, and equips them further for employment situations. We offer free classes at levels from beginning to advanced, in reading, writing. speaking and listening. Each class integrates Jesus and the Gospel into the lesson plan and conversations. At our Christmas and Easter parties we include the students' families; celebrating cultural diversity and further building relationships. Please contact Jeff Simunic to be an ESL teacher, or for more information: jeff@westviewlife.org / 514.626.5460 ext. 107 Parenting Seminar The Messy, Magnificent, Mysterious, Years Understanding What Makes Teens and Pre-teens Tick This seminar on November 8th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm is for parents of teens, pre-teens and children of all ages. It will focus on understanding the chaos of adolescence but will be very helpful for parents whose kids aren t there yet. Knowing what is coming and having the opportunity to interact intentionally in light of adolescence will be helpful for all parents, grandparents, youth workers and teachers. Hormones are raging. The ability to think in complete sentences seems to be lost forever. Emotions are riding a crazy rollercoaster. The kids we thought we knew when they were 10 have turned into a different people overnight! These formative adolescent years represent some of the greatest challenges and the best opportunities we have as parents and other adults who work with teenagers. In this seminar Marv will help us explore the often puzzling developmental journey that our kids find themselves on. We ll look at what s happening in their minds, their bodies, their spirits and their relationships. We ll try to sort out the way our parenting style plays out in the lives of children at various ages and most importantly we ll ask the so what questions. How do we respond proactively and intentionally to these developmental realities? How do we help our children sort out right from wrong in a world without a moral compass? Based on a growing understanding, we ll look at what we can do as adults in the lives of kids to help them make the most of these wonderful crazy years. It requires the very best of us courage, patience, perseverance, grace, and unconditional love but the dividends it pays in the lives of our kids makes it the best investment ever! 3
Immigrant Assistance Ministry T h e r e h a v e b e e n s o m e n e w developments We were recently put in contact with a family, by the Welcome Collective. This family consists of a single mother with a 14 year old daughter, 12 year old daughter, and 9 year old son. They had been in the US but have been granted asylum in Canada. We have organized a few people so far to find ways to initially meet their most pressing needs for food and clothing and some initial household furnishings, but there are still significant practical needs of items, as well as assisting them to navigate the culture, bureaucratic systems, and neighbourhood adjustments. Here is a link to a document that outlines some of the needs you can help with and sign up for. We will continue to update the document.
