GOD S LAWS God s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, Hear, O Israel. Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Knights of Columbus Council #9456 Membership Drive Would you be interested in knowing more about the Knights of Columbus and the local St. Joseph Council? If you ve spent any time around the Parish Campus you probably have seen some of our members working on the grounds, serving as Ushers, EM s and performing other tasks. But have you ever wondered what the Knights are really all about? We perform many more functions that benefit a vast variety of our local population. We work with the youth, the homeless, the clergy. We have insurance programs for our families. We give to charities the help victims of natural disasters such as the recent hurricane that made land fall in the Carolinas. If you are interested in learning more, we encourage you to contact one of us. Or you can send a text to 719-557-0566 or an email to uiowa1@hotmail.com A Message from Bishop Berg Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We join with the friends and relatives of the 11 people killed yesterday at the Tree of Life Synagogue, with the traumatized Jewish community, with the wounded law enforcement officials and their families, and with the people of Pittsburgh in their shock and grief at their loss. The horrendous slaughter of innocent people at a place of worship brings us together, in solidarity, to pray for healing and a unified direction for peace in out communities. We pray for an end to hatred in all its evil manifestations, an end to divisive speech and activities, and a return for our society to basic civil values of respect and charity for all people. These are the virtues for which our country was founded and for which our Catholic faith stands. Jesus says in Matthew 19:14, "Let the little children come to me and do not prevent them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." and therefore transfers to us the obligation for their rights to life, to liberty, and to the freedom of worship as they are called. Please join me in my prayers of repentance for what has been done and to effect a change in our future and especially for the repose of the souls of the victims who were lost. Yours in Christ, Bishop Stephen J. Berg
