We have all become more alert to dangers that could possibly come our way. The stranger danger we once discussed with our children has escalated into possible assault from any direction at any time, particularly in crowded places. The words unknown shooter have become words the news and media used often. We know that even now, that term has morphed into Unknown Assault since the danger may be other than someone with a gun. How does this kind of an environment affect our mind set? Does it make us nervous, angry, more cautious, less restful, and more watchful as we move about from place to place in our weekly community activities? The Stephen Ministers want to help people feel more confident in their living space. We will have a representative from the Warren Police Department here to speak with us regarding Safety in Warren. We will also have a representative from Macomb County Health Services who will speak with us about dealing with our own personal state of mind resulting from the horrors we see taking place around us in a much more frequent and violent fashion. On May 16, 2018, The entire Warren community is welcome to meet with us in the Fellowship Hall as we listen to our community professionals from the Police Department and Macomb County Health Department. When more specific information is planned, we will keep you posted of this informative meeting. Mark your calendar: May 16, 2018.

TOWER TALKS Page 2 The Pastor s Pen Welcome to our faith community focus as together we say goodbye to this pastor and hello to Rev. Melissa Claxton, who is eagerly preparing to take her place as your pastor on July 1 st. In these few short weeks we will celebrate all the ways we have grown in faith, take note of all the ways we faltered, and most importantly, acknowledge all the ways we have learned to extend and receive grace. Our sermon series, Grace: Supreme blessedness! A series on The Beatitudes, continues through May 20 th. The Beatitudes are the blueprint for Christian s to follow as disciples of Jesus Christ. The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus collection of teachings found in Matthew chapters 5-7, challenge the Church to live out grace in ways that transform us and the world around us. The remaining weeks look like this: April 22: April 29: May 6: May 13: May 20: Happy are the humble. Happy are the people who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness. Happy are the merciful; happy are the pure of heart. Happy are the peacemakers. Happy are those who are harassed because they are righteous. On Mother s Day, May 13, we will appropriately welcome three new little ones into the family of God through the sacrament of baptism as we dedicate and bless the United Methodist Women s layette project as they are bundled for delivery to moms and new families in our community. We will also begin creating a stole for Pastor Melissa to receive on her first Sunday as your new pastor and preacher, teacher and guide. This stole will be sewn together out of fabric strips with your prayers for her, her ministry among you, and your prayers for Warren First. It will be a patchwork of dreams and hopes, scriptures and stories. May 20 th is Pentecost Sunday. We will celebrate the blessing of the Holy Spirit coming upon the faithful disciples and the creation of the body of Christ, the Church. The day will be all the more powerful as the Music Department celebrates all the choirs and music ensembles before they begin their summer hiatus. And we will celebrate Twylia, Sarah, and the whole worship team! The next two weeks will feature guest preachers as Dennis and I attend a memorial service and then Annual Conference in Traverse City. Please keep your lay members to Annual Conference in your prayers! Warren First is sending two lay members this year, Paul Sadowski and Twylia Voshol. My last Sunday here is June 10 th. We will have a celebration together on this Graduation Sunday, our young people graduating high school, earning degrees, and Dennis and I taking our next step in our faith journey. We will be packing up the parsonage in Warren and preparing to unpack in Lexington sometime that week. There will be much to do to prepare for a new pastor here. Much of the work involves preparing our hearts. For life-long Methodists, this is how it is. For those who haven t experienced a change in pastoral appointments, all this is a challenge. There is grief, excitement, and anxiety. You are welcome to share your feelings during this time, with myself, Dennis, Staff Parish Committee members (Frank Vernarsky, Paul Sadowski, Ashley Staple, Richard Knakal, Sherry Descamps, John Cole) and one another. You are welcome to and encouraged to say goodbye to me as your pastor. Our relationship doesn t end; it will be different. We will be friends in Christ. And you will begin a new relationship with Rev. Claxton as she is installed as your new pastor. You will find God has sent you an amazing gift in Pastor Melissa! I am very excited for all that she brings and your future in ministry together. These six years of shared ministry have been a blessing. It has been a shared journey of growth and struggle, joy and tears. God has been faithful through our best days and rough ones. I wouldn t have missed a single one! I give thanks to God for you daily. Always, yours in the journey, Pastor Susan

TOWER TALKS Page 3 Church & Community Events... March 31, dawned with bright sunshine for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. After an amazing breakfast of pancakes, the children sat down to listen to Police Officer Martinez of the Warren Police Department and Pastor Susan read stories to them. After story time, the kids made crafts and competed in an Easter egg roll. Next, the kids planted magic jelly beans in the flower bed along the sanctuary. The next morning, lollipops sprouted where the jelly beans were planted. Robert in particular was very excited. Finally, the children rounded the Easter eggs up and exchanged them for a bag of candy and books. The hit of the morning was the face painting! The youth didn't want to do any of the other activities until their faces were painted. The volunteers made this day special for our youth. Thank you to all who participated. TOWER TALKS Page 6 LADIES NIGHT OUT Just us ladies, just hangin out! May 11 @ 6pm Location TBD Check the weekly church bulletin or contact LeeAnn All ladies are welcome! Bring a friend!! Questions and RSVP - Contact LeeAnn Witherspoon 586-215-8158 lwitherspoon947@gmail.com L A Y E T T E S It is time again to begin shopping, sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. for items to be included in the layettes to be assembled by United Methodist Women. For many years the layette project has been a means by which we are able to help new moms in our community. New mothers who come to the hospital without proper clothing for the newborn to go home in will be given one of these layettes. The needs of these recipients are determined by staff at hospitals, clinics, and social service agencies in the area. Anyone too busy to sew or shop can put money or a check (made out to the U.M.W.) in an envelope marked Layettes, and the phantom shoppers (who love shopping for sales) will go into action. A pack-n-play is located in the Narthex to place your purchases or completed items in. You may want to take advantage of sales in progress now. The deadline for donations is May 6, 2018. If you have any questions, please contact Reva Misch at 586.295.6563 or at: pinkycross6@yahoo.com. Each layette consists of (size 0-12 months) 1 sleeper, 1 pair booties or socks, 1 sweater set or playsuit, 1 receiving blanket, 1 bib, 6 disposable diapers, 1 afghan or crib blanket, 1 onesie, and 1 bottle. Thank you!
