October 14, 2018 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Two Penance can take many different forms, ranging from prayer, good works, self-denial, and almsgiving. Some forms of penance may last a long time, while others may be more intense. Penance may be voluntary or in some cases, church law might require it. Often enough, penance may seem like punishment, especially since we most often receive a formal penance after confessing our sins. Seeing penance as punishment for sin is like saying that medicine is punishment for disease. Medicine offers a cure, relief from illness, and hope of healing. It can also promote well being and prevention of disease. The same can be said of penance. When we sin, we turn from God. We chose to act in some way that is contrary to God s law and God s love. Sin always has an impact on us, on others, and on our relationship with God. As members of the church, our own personal holiness - or lack of it - contributes to the overall holiness of the church. When we sin, the church feels the lack of unity and wholeness that grace can bring. Penance is a way of remedying the hurt and loss that our sin causes. We make reparation and resolve not to sin again. Through self-discipline, prayer and good intention, we refocus on our faith, renew our relationship with God, self, and with each other. Far from a punishment, penance is a way to receive forgiveness, extend mercy and healing, and restore grace. It also strengthens us to avoid sin by developing the habits and virtues that lead us closer to God. Mass Intentions for the Week SATURDAY, October 13th 5:30 PM John D. It may be due to a physical ailment or an emotional strain. Caregivers themselves, whether physicians or nurses or family members, may be in need of the healing presence of Christ, sacramentally administered in a Mass of Anointing. During this celebration of Christ s healing power, anyone who is weakened by age or illness or has a condition that diminishes their quality of life is invited to receive the Sacrament of Healing through the laying on of hands and anointing with holy oils, as well as their caregivers. May the power of the Holy Spirit in this Sacrament provide comfort, courage, patience and hope to all those who suffer. Anyone who would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is asked to call the rectory office at 201-436-0857. Thank you.

These books will remain in the pews for a number of years. They will replace our paperback missalettes which are discarded and re-purchased every year (like a subscription). The new hymnals, called RITUAL SONG, are hardcover, sturdy, and beautifully printed. They include a vast number of songs and hymns which we already use. About half the music is traditional Catholic hymnody and half contemporary or folk culture music. Our sung Mass responses will not be changed. The new hymnals will also include the Sunday readings for each week printed in full. This important change to permanent hymnals will save our parish thousands of dollars. And by not wasting paper nor causing carbon emissions by disposal of the books, we will contribute to a sound environment.. Note that these new hymnals are to remain in the church and not taken be taken home. Donations for our New Hymnals You are invited to donate a hymnal in memory or in honor of a loved one. This will help lower the initial cost for making this change. The donation requested is $20 per hymnal. Envelopes are at the entrances of the church. Fill in the requested information and enclose your donation. You can place the envelope in the offering basket or send it in to the Parish Office, 82 West 29th St., Bayonne, NJ. A bookplate will be inserted in the front cover of the hymnal to acknowledge your donation and name the person you have memorialized or honored. Thank you for your support of this project!
