THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 4, 2018 PARISH CALENDAR SUNDAY November 4 9:30 AM Choir, church MONDAY November 5 6:00 PM RCIA, parish center conference room TUESDAY November 6 No PREP 7:45 PM Athletic Association, gym WEDNESDAY November 7 6:00 PM PREP, school 7:45 PM Athletic Association, gym THURSDAY November 8 FRIDAY November 9 8:00 PM A/A, Alanon, Alateen, church hall SATURDAY November 10 A SOLDIER'S PRAYER (written by an anonymous confederate soldier, US civil war) I asked God for strength, that I might achieve, I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey... I asked for health, that I might do greater things, I was given infirmity, that I might do better things... I asked for riches, that I might be happy, I was given poverty, that I might be wise... I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men, I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God... I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life, I was given life, that I might enjoy all things... I got nothing that I asked for - but everything that I had hoped for, Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all men most richly blessed. Remember in your prayers the members of our Armed Services, especially: Josh Hayes, cousin of Kathy Perkins; JP Brown, godson of Elizabeth Melo; Justin Molarz, grandson of Susan Molarz; Jesus L. Santiago, cousin of Felix and Ana Morales; Christopher Czapik, grandson of Carol Knittel; Justin Lurker, grandson of Helen Lurker; Robert Michnowicz, nephew of Helen Lurker; Mario Roman, son of Janice Pastures; Marc Repace, grandson of Pat Consiglio; Taylor Setar, daughter of Greg and Terry Setar; Gabriella Gatto, daughter of Carmelo and Nicole Gatto; Laura Roe, daughter of Maria and Luis Pena; Elizabeth Brito and Lisa Marie Brito, daughters of Ivette Brito. For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven... a time to heal... for the sick of our Parish and especially for Mary Wagner, Fr. John Morley, Alyssa Alcudia, Alice Benson Pro-Life Prayer for our President and Public Officials Lord God, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life, move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all those entrusted to their care. Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn whose lives are threatened with extermination by an indifferent society. Guide all public officials by Your wisdom and grace to cease supporting any law that fails to protect the fundamental good that is human life itself, which is a gift from God. You are the Protector and Defender of the lives of the innocent unborn. Change the hearts of those who compromise the call to protect and defend life. Bring our Nation to the values that have made us a great Nation, a society that upholds the value of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Amen. VOTE THIS TUESDAY! We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity meaningfully to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public forum. Every vote counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power. We must exercise that power in ways that defend human life, especially those of God's children who are unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable. We get the public officials we deserve. Their virtue or lack thereof is a judgment not only on them, but on us. Because of this, we urge our fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest. -U.S. Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, n. 34 PRAY AND FAST FOR VOCATIONS VOCATION PRAYER Father, in the power of the Spirit, You send us forth to build up Your Kingdom. I pray especially for those whom You are calling to serve the Church as priests, deacons, sisters and brothers. Help them to hear and answer Your call to discipleship. The harvest is plenty, but laborers are few. Please provide for us men and women who will help to gather in a great harvest of souls. I make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SUNDAY READINGS First Reading - Deuteronomy 6: 2-6 Second Reading - Hebrews 7: 23-28 Gospel - Mark 12: 28b-34 God s Laws God s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, Hear, O Israel. Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Phil 2: 1-4; Lk 14: 12-14 Tuesday: Phil 2: 5-11; Lk 14: 15-24 Wednesday: Phil 2: 12-18; Lk 14: 25-33 Thursday: Phil 3: 3-8a; Lk 15: 1-10 Friday: Ez 47: 1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 Cor 3: 9c-11, 16-17; Jn 2: 13-22 Saturday: Phil 4: 10-19; Lk 16: 9-15 Sunday: 1 Kgs 17: 10-16; Heb 9: 24-28; Mk 12: 38-44 or Mk 12: 41-44 OFFERTORY COLLECTION October 21, 2018 $5971 $6210 (2017) October 28, 2018 $6525 $6751 (2017) Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. -Hebrews 13:2 St. Joseph Food Pantry Thanksgiving Request Our Food Pantry distributes approximately 150 turkeys and all the trimmings to the Carteret community so that all can have a proper Thanksgiving meal. Life Choices Resource Center s Baby Bottle Blessings Fundraiser is underway. Please continue to fill your baby bottles with your change, cash, or a check (made payable to Life Choices Resource Center) and return it to the Church by November 18. Your gift will make a big difference in the life of a family and their unborn child! And to love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. -Mark 12:33 Of all the gifts that God gives us the one He wants the most is our heart. He wants us to share out of love, not out of obligation. Using our talent in Parish ministry and contributing money to support our Parish mission is important, but it s more important to spend time in prayer with God daily and discern how He is calling us to be generous with all of our gifts. Not just the visible ones, but the invisible ones like love, mercy, and forgiveness. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Church, or who seeks to come into full communion with the faith community.
