From Our Pastor... Connecting Music to the Mass From the earliest times of Christianity, music has been an integral part of our worship. Many scripture passages that we read were actually hymns when first written. Here at St. Clare we are blessed with a great music ministry that uses the talents of all ages, including our new cherub choir of children s voices from 2nd-4th grades that sang beautifully last Sunday. Our music director, Stephen Eros, works hard at choosing hymns that flow from the Scripture readings we hear at Mass, with texts that remind us we are here to worship God while also being sent for Mission into the world. A few months ago he started writing a weekly column that explains how the songs for that Sunday connect us to the Readings. We were printing them in the bulletin, but many couldn t read the column until after Mass was over. Therefore, we have now put them online in our weekly St. Clare Connection email to you. You will see the link for this article called Connecting Music to Mass at www.stclarechurch.org/musictomass. I want to strongly encourage you to read this article, which includes the actual texts of the hymns, before you come to the weekend liturgy in order to help you better participate and understand how the hymns are actually a part of the prayer we are offering to God. You can read it at home or if you ride to church with a spouse, friend, or your kids, have them read it out loud to everyone in the car on the way to church so it is fresh on your minds. If a song is new to you, at least pick up the hymnal and pray the powerful words of the prayer we are singing together. The songs are a vital part of the Mass and your participating in them helps us worship God more fully. I want to especially thank our choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists who add so much to our worship with the generosity of their time and talent. But your voice in the pew is just as important as theirs in order for us to fully praise God in worship. God s Peace to you, Fr. Jim P.S. Proverbs 11:24 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Catholic Campaign for Human Development Though the children in many low-income communities often attend failing school systems, the children of East San Jose s Alum Rock Elementary Union School District have a chance to break out of the cycle of poverty through three new small autonomous public schools, each with an enrollment of about 250 students. The schools offer smaller class sizes, extended instruction days, committed parental involvement and more freedom in curriculum design, budgeting, and staffing. The new small autonomous schools (NSASs) are the result of years of hard work by hundreds of leaders from people Acting in Community Together (PACT), a faith based organization that represents 35,000 individuals from 17 congregations in Santa Clara County, California who are creating positive change.
