FROM THE CLUB MANAGER Report for the month of August,2018 Total Sales $25,680.00 Cost Of Liquor: $9,848.05 Cost of Doing Business: $10,100.75 (Payroll,Taxes,Entertainment,Janitorial Etc.) NET PROFIT FROM BAR : $ 5,731.20 Transferred to General Fund $ 5,731.20 October is here and the cooler weather is finally upon us. I hope everybody had a safe and productive summer. We welcome back all of our winter visitors. I hope all of you had a great summer as well! On a sad note, I m sorry to say that we lost a very valuable man to our Post. His name was Mike Mcardle. Since transferring to our Post, Mike and his lovely wife Kathleen have been constant volunteers here. Mike was our Post secretary and our Post Adjutant. He was a huge contributor to the success of this Post and he will be sorely missed by us all. Rest in peace my friend. The American Patriot Memorial commemoration spearheaded by Tom Boyle of Mike Pierce Insurance was a huge success and was a very organized event. Our officers of the Post,The SAL, The ALR and the Aux. were proud to be asked to participate. For those of you that didn t attend this year s commemoration, I urge you to come to it next year. It is a commemoration of the 9-11 tragedy. At the present time, we are overloaded with medical supplies. Things like walkers, canes, shower chairs etc. If anybody has a need for anything, you are welcome to have them free of charge. Please see me. October means Halloween and we will be having our annual costume contest on the 27 th. We will be having a German food buffet that evening, so come on out and celebrate that holiday. Sunday the 28 th is the annual kids Halloween party that starts at noon. So bring the kids! As always throughout the course of the year, we provide live bands and a very good meal for a ganga price on Friday and Saturday nights, so keep supporting your Post! Everybody have a great October! For God and Country Kevin J. Smith Commander s Message September brought me to the Arizona American Legion College up in Springerville, AZ. Great weather was had by all who attended. Mr. Joe Roberts and I carpooled four and half hours north. The long days brought great information to be absorbed by all the students. Joe and I traveled the furthest for this great training. Post thirty six was represented well, once again. Some things that I learned from the College was that there are some Parliamentary things we are doing wrong. I will implement these subtle things in time. Two things stood out for me. Dax is our Vice Commander, not our first Vice Commander. And that the Auxiliary is not the Ladies Auxiliary, but the American Legion Auxiliary. So I may need some help with these things, please correct me and anyone who may misspeak these two little things. More to come on the changes we will be making. The instructors also emphasized that we are the only Veterans Organization that does not have the word Veteran in its name. Hence the importance that we explain that we are in fact a Veteran Service Organization (VSO). The largest VSO in the world. We are the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the American Legion Riders. I can't say enough about this Arizona Legion College, no matter what your role is in the American Legion, Officer, Legionnaire, Son, or Auxiliary. This will help the American Legion Post 36, beyond any recognition. The next College will take place right here at Post 36, the third week of January, 2019. Please fill out an application and get it to me. I would love to have the majority of the class be from 36. By my count, last month's General Membership was attended by 44 members, what a great attendance. I would like to thank Mr. Al Goings has written a couple of articles that talked about coming to our meetings. I would like to see some new faces in the audience this month, bring a friend, a family member, or even someone from the lounge area. If even just to listen for a few minutes. You may just like what you hear. One last thing, we will be conducting a Post Initiation, during the General Membership meeting on the 10 th of October, 7pm. I hope to see not only all the new members there, but even our older tenured members to attend this historic ceremony. Thank you for everything that you do. Steve Commander

HOW ARE WE DOING? A report from our Finance Officer: Income Expenses Profit/(Loss) June $22,612.92 $22,740.36 $( 127.44) July $29,238.67 $30,203.58 $( 964.91) Aug $25,173.38 $27,222.52 $( 2,049.14) Profit/Loss varies due to dates of deposits, purchases.etc. Unit 36, Ladies Auxiliary I would like to begin by thanking everyone who came out to volunteer and participate in the Patriot s Day celebration. It was a very touching ceremony and an honor to be a part of it. As we begin October, I would like to remind everyone of our Poker Run on Oct.6 th and invite everyone to come along on the ride whether on a bike, jeep, truck, car or whatever mode of transportation you choose. The more the merrier! We also have the adult Halloween party on the 27 th with the Kid s Halloween Party to follow on the 28 th. We will also be holding a one day rummage sale on the 27 th from 8am-2pm, in hopes to make some room for more items for our larger rummage sale in the future. We are able to make our events successful with all the wonderful people who take time from their busy lives to help us with all of our events, and we are ever so grateful for these individuals. We look forward to their continued support and welcome new faces as new members are joining each day. November will be bringing new events and new opportunities. You may be seeing a few new faces around the post, new members from each entity, let s all welcome them to our home. For God and Country, Shelley Merritt Unit 36 President American Legion Riders It is hard to believe that the Holiday season is almost upon us, where has the year gone? It is also the time of year that we should think of the less fortunate. There are plenty of opportunities to help these families throughout Tucson, and even in our own Post. If you are able, and you see a food or toy donation box, just grab an extra item at the store and donate it. People may think that their small contribution wouldn t really help, but once you add everything together it can make someone a much better Holiday than they would have without it. As always, we will have donation boxes at the Post for the different charities we all support. Donations will be gathered to help with Thanksgiving Day meals as well as Christmas Dinners and toys for the kids. As Riders, we support many of the Holiday charities that go on. We will have Riders participating in the 8 th Annual Santa Clause Toy Run, the Red Sleigh run, and of course our own Auxiliary s Annual Children s Christmas Party, along with many other events. If you have never heard of, or seen, the Red Sleigh run, you should make it a point to go see it. They take all of the donated toys and load them into a sleigh that is towed behind a motorcycle. The long line of bikes make their way through Tucson delivering toys to underprivileged children all over the city. It is sometimes hard to tell whether they are more excited to receiving the toys or seeing all of those motorcycles showing up at their home. You can be the biggest, baddest biker there is, but the sight will always leave a tear in your eye. This is but one of the many community charities that the Rider s support, and we can always use your help. I know it is a bit early to be talking about Christmas, but it will be here before we know it. Don Duckie Bracken President, ALR Post 36

Darlene Roberts Terrance Nordahl Charles Anderson John Desmond Bill Bland NEW MEMBERS TRANSFERS Don Roberts John Ramirez POST EVERLASTING Mike Mcardle John Johnson Clifford Anderson COW PASTURE GOLF OCTOBER SCHEDULE: Oct. 7th Torres Blancas 7:30 AM Oct 14th SAL Tourney Canoa Ranch 8:30 AM Oct 21st Haven 7:30 AM Oct 28th 49ers 8:00 AM Any Questions, call Rich Schweiss 520-403-6218 S.A.L. Commander Hello fellow Legion Family members. Summer is slowly easing away and with that comes busier times and much nicer weather (usually!). Another reminder to everyone to try to pay your dues as soon as you are able. Remember that there are benefits that you are ONLY eligible for, when your dues are current. And as I have said, there are goals set by the state and national organizations that we try to attain. The main key to achieving those goals is retention. The sooner you renew, the less effort we have to expend to bring you back in. As always, I want to mention burger night. Hopefully you can come in to enjoy a delicious burger with fries for a very reasonable price. If you go home hungry, it s your own fault. Or you have a problem I don t know. And as I mentioned at a recent Post meeting, until the annex is repaired, we will not have Monday Night Football on the big screen in the main hall. The Girl Scouts, who used to meet in the annex, are now meeting in the hall. You are more than welcome to watch the game in the lounge, but the big screen is off for now. We continue to sell tickets for the Jim Click Millions for Tucson Raffle. First prize is a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee, second prize is 2 first class, round trip airplane tickets to anywhere in the world. Third prize is a cool $5,000 cash. Tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. They are available from any Squadron 36 officer. Don t miss out on your chance to win one of these spectacular prizes! As I write this article, we are working on scheduling the Texas Hold em Tournament in October or November. Although we are unable to have it in the annex (as previously mentioned), our plan is to hold it in the game room. We can close the accordion doors and have it there. Due to some possible conflicts, I don t want to provide an exact date. Call or stop in at the post soon for further details. By the time you read this, our annual Commander s Golf Tournament has likely already taken place. If not, we hope you will help make this the most successful one yet! If not for the loyalty and support of all of the Legion Family members, none of our goals would be realized. Thank you all!! Finally, I want to mention a truly wonderful experience I recently had. Along with Post Commander Sperl, I had the honor of attending Arizona Legion College in Springerville, Arizona. It was an enlightening and invaluable experience. As most of you know, I have been in the Sons of The American Legion almost all of my life, and have served at every level of the organization. The Arizona Legion College showed me how many things I didn t know, and how many things I knew wrong. Things I had been told my entire life that were flawed. Not necessarily on purpose, but incorrect practices had been perpetuated. I came away a better member of this organization and I hope others will follow behind me. Knowledge is power and we need more of our members to take the challenge and advance. I urge anyone interested to ask and keep the flame burning. I also want to express my gratitude to Post 36 and our members for all of your support. Until next time Joe Roberts, SAL Commander
