Grand Knights Report Dear Brother Knights and Families Wow, things have been really busy this last month, and now we have more decisions to make. At our May Council meeting we will have sign up sheets for the election of officers. One thing I have learned as Grand Knight, it is better to move up the ranks of officers to better understand how the Council is to function. Think about it, pray about it, if you are ready to help guide our Council through another year, please throw your hat into the ring for the elections. I would like to thank Deacon George Vick and Larry Gladu for stepping up as our alternate and delegate going to the State Convention May 13 15 th. As much as I would have liked to go, my commitments to the Good Shepherd Festival Live Auction precluded me from going. As most of you know, Richard Henke, our Inside Guard, has moved up to Ft. Worth to live with his family. I would like to thank Richard for all his hard work and dedication to our Council, he will be missed. At our April meeting Bob Schmidt was elected as our new Inside Guard. Thank you Bob for taking on the position. You remember that Bishop Tom asked for a command performance at the April Chapter meeting at Assumption Seminary. Other Councils brought side dishes, homemade bread, and all the other necessary items, turned out to be a wonderful meal. Thank you to Dave Dumas, Lino Trevino, Jeff Heim and Harold Jones, well done guys. Speaking of fish, our Fish Friday fund raisers are now over. We don t have our final figures yet but I think we did pretty well. At a minimum we had great comradery and community involvement. My neighbors, non-catholics and not knowing I was GK came because they saw it on our marquee. They came, ate and sat for awhile. Not only was it a fundraiser, but a way for people to come together as a community. I would like to thank our cooking team (mentioned above) along with the Road Kill Crew, Teams 1 4 that came out to help, the Ladies Auxiliary for their help (those wonderful desserts) and to everyone who came to eat and enjoy. Again, good job everyone. I am sure that next year will be even better. There will be a Major Degree Exemplification (Second and Third Degree) on May 22 at Council 8001, St. Andrew in Pleasanton. If you or someone you know needs to advance in their degrees, please let David Dumas or myself know. This would be an excellent opportunity to advance your Knighthood degree. Candidates cost will be paid by the Council. As a reminder, on May 7 th the Special Olympics Spring Games will be held right here in Schertz at the Samuel Clemens stadium. Things have been finalized but we can always use help. We will be putting together sack lunches at the hall and then taking them down to the stadium to be handed out. Even if you only go to the stadium for a little while to cheer on these Olympians, wear your Knights shirt to let them know the Knights are there to support them. I would like to thank everyone for your continued hard work and dedication in our council activities. Every member s assistance and participation makes a difference. Thank you! Congratulations to the Knight of the Month for April Lino Trevino Congratulations to the Family of the Month for March Jeff and Debbie Heim Congratulations to the Family of the Month for April Gary and Marie Cabigon Let us pray, Jesus, Mary & Joseph, the Holy Family, Guide Us. Mother Teresa Assembly No. 2523 Message from the Faithful Navigator of Assembly 2523 Our Assembly Officer s Election will be held during the June Monthly Business Meeting with Installation of Officers on July 18 th at 6:30P.M. in lieu of our regular monthly meeting. Please step up and run for one of these positions and participate in the success and future of your Assembly. There will be a $5.00 per plate charge for the meal. The Comptroller will begin taking reservations at the May meeting. At this time, we are planning for Finger Food for the social period, and for the Dinner: Club Steaks, a garden salad, 2 vegetables, tea and a desert. Hopefully, between now and the meal, the wholesale price of beef will not go up so much that we are priced out of the market. Please come out and support the new officers that will be installed into office for the 2011-2012 Fraternal Year. On Tuesday, April 19 th, your Assembly presented the Schertz Veterans Memorial Board a check for $500.00 as a Patriotic Donation for the project. The Assembly donation was presented to the Veterans Memorial Board of Directors by SK Earl Sawyer, Sir Knight Ed Higgs and SK Roger E. Moore. Your Assembly has been invited to participate in Honor Guard Dress (Full Regalia) on Friday, May 13 th at 5:00P.M. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church to celebrate the 25 th Anniversary of Perpetual Adoration at Good Shepherd. The Mayor of Schertz, Br. Harold Baldwin will be presenting a plaque to Bishop Cantu in honor of the event. Following the Presentation Ceremony, there will be a Photo-Op with the Bishop, members of the Perpetual Adoration group and the Sir Knights as the backdrop in Full Regalia. A Mass will be celebrated with Bishop Cantu as the Main Celebrant. The Honor Guard will be Processing In with the Bishop and his co-celebrants and Process Out after the Mass. Following the Mass, there will be a Spaghetti Dinner and the Sir Knights are invited to attend. Show Time is 4:45P.M. As of the April Assembly Meeting, 91% of our Sir Knights have paid their dues. For any Sir Knight that is having problems in getting their Assembly Dues paid, please call the F. Navigator or the F. Comptroller so that they know you want to remain in the Assembly. From the Color Corps Commandeer: The Color Corps Commander, SK Tony Krasnai, thanks all of the Sir Knights that participated in the Rosary and Mass of Resurrection for Fallen Sir Knight, Sergio Shearer. A Chalice and Paten was presented to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma in honor of SK Shearer and the Chalice was used in the Celebration of his Funeral Mass. The following Sir Knights are celebrating the anniversary of their birth date in the month of May 2011: Barry Cole, Ruperto Rodriquez, Robert Gilmore, Kenneth Turner, Tom Wilkes, Jim Bendele, Posh Welch, Roy Masterson, James Clifford, Ramiro Rodriquez, and Don McCloskey II. The Ladies Auxiliary will be handing out Rosary Cards to mothers at all masses in Schertz and Marion on Mother's Day weekend. Your Sister In Christ, Patsy Foxworth; President KC Ladies Auxiliary Program Director- Mark Kirstein Service Awards The following members are eligible for the years of service award indicated. These awards will be presented at the regular meeting in the month of May. If you cannot be present for that meeting, it will be your responsibility to contact the Grand Knight to make alternate arrangements. Michael Gladu 30 Years; Elmer Fernandez 25 Years; John Slaughter 10 Years; Roy Masterson 5 Years Church Activity Director-Deacon George Vick, Jr, PGK Director Lectors Commentary On May 1, Pope Benedict XVI beatifies the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, the last major step before canonization or sainthood for the much-loved Pontiff, following which he can be publicly venerated with the title of Blessed. The healing of a French nun with Parkinson's disease is to go down in history as the miracle that made John Paul II a "blessed." The title is given to martyrs and other Christians, to whom a miracle has been officially attributed, thus bringing them one step closer to sainthood. The choice for the beatification date is full of significance for the late Pope, who died just a day before the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday in 2005. The day was particularly important to the late Pope John Paul because it was the day in 2000 that he celebrated the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska and declared that the Sunday after Easter should henceforth be known as "Divine Mercy Sunday." May 1 st being the Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday where we celebrate the fulfillment of what Easter is all about and receive a big outpouring of a whole ocean of graces. The attainment of these graces is brought about by TRUSTING in Jesus and by approaching His ministers and going to Confession. Mercy Sunday is about getting souls back to the practice of the faith. By trusting in Jesus we surrender to God and He will do everything for us. Our Lady of Fatima - the general message of Fatima is not complicated. Its requests are for prayer, reparation, repentance, sacrifice, and the abandonment of sin. As we celebrate the anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima let us ask for her protection and her intercession. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. To all mothers; great-grandmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, stepmothers and Godmothers a very special thank you for everything you do Happy Mother s Day to all of you. And lastly let us especially remember and include in our prayers those brave soldiers who served our country faithfully and honorably and their families as we commemorate them on Memorial Day. May they rest in peace. Amen. Blessed John Paul II, pray for us. St. Faustina, pray for us. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. Jesus, I Trust in You. Have mercy on us.

Knights Choir The Knights Choir will sing on Sunday, May 15 th, 2011 at Good Shepherd Church at the 8AM Mass. Rehearsal is at 7:15AM. We are looking forward for more Knights to join us. Interested, contact Larry Gladu, PGK 210-659-3187 Lenten Fish Fries Council Activity William Bailey, PGK, Director, The Lenten fish fries were a huge success. The council served an average of 250 plates for each of the five Friday's. Those who attended were delighted with the meal and were asking if we were going to do it again next year. You bet! Many thanks goes to our cooks and our bingo teams who came together to make these events a huge success. A group of Ladies that helped push us over the top was our Ladies Auxiliary with their home baked desserts which were the icing on the cake (if you will excuse the pun). The Auxiliary always had the situation well in hand, manning their tables with the delicious confections and adding that personal touch to the event. It didn't stop there they worked the setup, manned the serving line, participated in the cleanup and so many other tasks. It could not have been done without them. Thank you Ladies, your contribution was a key to our success. Oh by the way, I believe at last count they averaged over $100 in dessert sales per session. We want to thank everyone who worked the fish fries you all made it happen. It takes many hands and hearts to make a project like this successful and you were there. THANK YOU!! It is for sure again with your help we will do it again next year. Officers Installation Dinner The wheels have been set in motion for the upcoming Installation of the new elected officers. The date is July 8, the dress is Sunday best and the itinerary is as follows: 6:00 pm - 6:45 pm Installation 6:45 pm - 7:00 pm Awards 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm Social (drinks provided) 7:30 pm Dinner The menu will be: Seasoned Pork Chops Rice Pilaf Vegetable Medley Potato Salad Dinner Rolls Dessert Iced tea & coffee The cost per member and guest is $5.00 per plate. The sign-up list will be at all future KC functions and in the office at the hall starting on one June. See Jerry, Frank or their designated representative. The last day for reservations is July 1st. Hope to see you there.

Columbus Club - Bill Bailey, President Outside Lighting Kudos to two of our brother electricians Jerry and Mark Kirstein for installing the outdoor lighting over the cook s area. Brothers Dave, Lino and others were working with lesser then sufficient lightning while preparing the delicious foods we sell and serve. Thank you Jerry and Mark for a job well done. Consumables Tax Form There is a form in the bar that tracks the consumption of food (snack items) soda/water and beer. This form is to track items consumed by workers for tax purposes only. Please advise the bartender to add to the form the taxable items you are taking. Thank you. Sometime early this summer we need the hall parking lot cleaned-up. Brothers Ed Higgs and John Sampson have taken over the grounds keeping that were done for so many years by Jerry Bortel, our hall manager, and Harold Jones, the maintenance go to guy. We need your help. Look for a request in next month's newsletter for grounds keepers. There was only a minimum participation for the recent hall clean-up which seemed to be the same folks that have done it in the past. Maybe 6 to 8 Knights showed for an 8 to 10 hour project. We need to support our hall management and show up to work these events especially the ones ready our hall for the public to see. Maybe the day or the time was wrong or there was not enough publicity. Would a Saturday or something else be better? Tell Jerry the next time you see him when the best day or time would be for the next one. Attention Brother Knights 2011 DUES ARE PAST DUE Your 2011 dues are now due. Please pay your dues as soon as possible. The annual dues are $24.00 per year. Please attend the next council meeting to pay your dues, pay your dues at the Council Hall or mail them to James Theisen, 1313 Chestnut Drive, Schertz, TX 78154-1507. Checks should be made out to Good Shepherd Council 6358. Membership Activities David Dumas, Director Friendship Sunday Friendship Sunday, supported by our council, is scheduled for the third (3 rd ) Sunday of every month at Good Shepherd Church after the 8AM Knights Mass. Contact Gerald Fey, 658-1937, Chris Tusko 658-4687 and Mike Burton 659-1366 to volunteer to help with the recruiting of new members. Knights Sunday Knights Sunday, supported by our council, is scheduled for the fourth (4 th ) Sunday of every month at Immaculate Conception Church after the 9:30AM Knights Mass. Coffee, orange juice and doughnuts will be served by the council. We need Brother Knights to support this event to help with recruiting new members.
