First Presbyterian Church For Christ in the Heart of Charlotte Founded in 1821 Order of Worship Communion Sunday July 1, 2018 11 a.m. You are invited to use the time before the service to prepare your heart and mind for worship. In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude Offertory for the Grand Chorus François Couperin Words of Welcome Choral Call to Worship Adoration The Reverend Katherine Kerr William Young The earth is the Lord s and all that dwell therein. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and the King of Glory shall come in. Amen. *Hymn No. 338 O Beautiful for Spacious Skies materna

Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. We are grateful to Jim Twyne for playing the organ and to Kelly Potts for directing the choir today. We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary) where the service is streaming. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Confession The Reverend Erika Funk All: Lord, you are before and behind us, whether we stand in the midst of a crowd or the edge of the wilderness. We look at your path, but sometimes we are afraid and we turn our eyes back instead; we long for what is comfortable and familiar. We hear your voice, but it is so easy to turn toward the many other voices offering a life of fun and prosperity. We pray for your will to be done, but it is easier to just go along as we always have. Forgive us, O God. Turn us forward, and set our feet on your path. One: In silent prayer let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Scripture 1 John 3:1-3 pew Bible pg. 240 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. First Church does not meet during the summer. Children in kindergarten and above are encouraged to participate in the full worship service, and care for younger children is available in the nursery. The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9 this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. Time with Children Children in kindergarten and above are encouraged to remain in worship. Younger children may go to the nursery. Scripture Luke 24:13-35 pew Bible pg. 90 Meditation Spiritual Geography: On the Road The Reverend Pen Peery *Hymn No. 525 Let Us Break Bread Together let us break bread Response *Affirmation of Faith Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Stewardship of Life Presentation of Tithes and Offering The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke

Offertory Anthem On Emmaus Journey arr. John Ferguson Who are you who walk in sorrow down Emmaus barren road, hearts distraught and hope defeated, bent beneath grief s crushing load? Nameless mourners, we will join you, we who also mourn our dead. We have stood by graves unyielding, eaten death s bard, bitter bread. Who is this who joins our journey, walking with us stride by stride? Unknown Stranger, can you fathom depths of grief for one who died? Then the wonder! When we told you how our dreams to dust have turned, Then you opened wide the Scriptures till our hearts within us burned! Who are you? Our hearts are opened in the breaking of the bread. Christ the victim, now the victor, living, risen from the dead! Great Companion on our journey, still surprise us with your grace! Make each day a new Emmaus; on our hearts your image trace! Who are we who travel with you on our way through life to death? Women, men, the young, the aging, wakened by the Spirit s breath! At the font you claim and name us, born of water and the Word. At the table still you feed us, host us as our Risen Lord! Alleluia! is the Easter hymn we sing! Take our life, our joy, our worship as the gift of love we bring. You have formed us all one people called from ev ry land and race. Make your church your servant Body, sent to share your healing grace! Invitation to the Table The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper The Great Thanksgiving One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name... Sanctus No. 552 land of rest Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
