Our committee is planning a wonderful evening which will include, among other highlights, a tour of both school buildings giving us a chance to relive memories and see the progress our alma mater has made since we received our diplomas. There will also be prizes for those who have travelled the furthest, have been married the longest, and who have the most grandchildren. There were 121 students in our class. We are trying to update our list of addresses and emails; a task compounded by the fact that we have classmates living in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. We need your help in updating our class roster. Please let us, the reunion committee, know if you have knowledge of the whereabouts of any of our grade school friends. SS. PETER AND PAUL CHURCH Lectio Divina: A Spiritual Way of Praying Scripture There is one particular way of listening to what the Lord wishes to tell us in His Word and of letting ourselves be transformed by the Spirit. It is what we call Lectio divina. It consists of reading God s Word in a moment of prayer and allowing it to enlighten and renew us (The Joy of the Gospel, 152) Answer the Lenten call to return to the Lord by experiencing and learning Lectio divina, an ancient way of praying the Scriptures. Because of the resurgence of the role of Sacred Scripture after Vatican Council II and of the contemplative dimension of Christianity, Lectio divina is now increasingly practiced by both the laity and religious throughout the world. Join us for Lectio Divina: A Spiritual Way of Praying Scripture to learn this way of prayer from our Catholic tradition. N.B. This is a participatory presentation; please bring your Bible or New Testament. The Saving Power of Divine Mercy by Fr. Jason Brooks, LC Pope John Paul II said that Divine Mercy is THE message for the third millennium and God's gift to our time. There is nothing that mankind needs more than Christ's Divine Mercy. To help us avail ourselves of that loving mercy, Fr. Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel is taken from John 20:19-29 when Jesus passes through locked doors, proclaims peace to His disciples, shows them His hands and His side, and breathes into them His Holy Spirit. As with all of the post-resurrection appearances of Christ, the supernatural and natural are inseparable Jesus, who passes unhindered through locked doors, shows Himself to the disciples as the Cruci ied One, inviting Thomas to probe the nail marks and place his hand into His side. The Evangelist wants to emphasize the bodily resurrection of Christ, helping us to understand what awaits the followers of Christ, too. Upon entering the upper room, Jesus greets His grief-stricken, fearful Apostles: Peace be with you. The imperative verb tense makes clear that Jesus words should not be mistaken as a casual greeting, but rather He is bestowing a lasting peace that only the Risen Lord can impart ful illing what He promised: Peace, is my farewell to you. My peace is my gift to you. I do not give it as the world gives it. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be fearful. You have heard me tell you, I am going away, and I am coming back to you (Jn 14:27). 1 At the sight of the Lord, the disciples rejoiced. Immediately, they were told to go out and proclaim what they had just witnessed, reminding us that evangelization is inseparable from faith in the Resurrection. Just as the Father was present to Jesus throughout His public life, Jesus must remain present to those whom He commissions; so, He breathed on them the Holy Spirit. Christ mirrors the creative work in Genesis when God the Father breathed into Adam the breath of life. Now, through the Holy Spirit, we are restored to life. It is the Holy Spirit that makes Christ present to us and by whom we become God s adopted children. It is through the Holy Spirit that bread and wine are transformed into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ at the Mass as the priest, extending his hands over the bread and wine, invokes the Holy Spirit moments before the consecration: Make holy, therefore these gifts, we pray by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 By sending His disciples out into the world to spread His message of love, Jesus does not guarantee that they will not face dif iculties: They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me (Jn 16:1-3). John s purpose in recounting the words of Jesus was to remind the early Christians and us that hardships, trials, and even persecution can coexist and need not destroy the Peace that only Christ can bring. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world (Jn 16:33). 1Brown, The Gospel According to John, The Anchor Bible, 29A, pp. 1018-1052. 2Second Eucharistic Prayer For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, email Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church April 8, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 11
