Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 28, 2018 A Reflection Dear Parishioners, Autumn or Fall is a time of change a time of transition. Fall is a season of life. Autumn affects inevitably our outward environment, our moods, our dress and even our activities. It s a season when the weather gets cooler, and we begin to bring out our stored away sweaters and shawls. Fall is inevitably a time of change. We will see it all around us as we pass through Autumn. The changes are beautiful and vibrant, but we also see signs of decay and death. If we have lost people in our lives, Fall is a time of remembrance it is a time we become more aware of their absence. Autumn tells us that summer is over, and a chapter is ending. But Autumn also reminds us that it is also a time of new beginnings. There is a spirit of hope for it is also a time of abundance and harvest. When we are given new beginnings, we are given opportunities to change and change for the better. Autumn invites us to go inwardly. It means to make ourselves ready for something brand new to happen in our lives. And so let us not deprive ourselves of the grace to stop and watch and make the most of what Autumn brings into our lives. God is at work creating something new for us. God has a plan. New life is on the way. During this season, if you are facing changes or transitions, either outwardly and inwardly, I invite you to allow those changes and transitions speak to your heart. Pray through them. Take time to reflect on them. For it is especially during this season of change and transition that you are becoming just what God hoped you would be. May the God of all our Seasons be with you! Fr. All Souls Day November 2 All Souls Day is coming a day in which we remember and pray for the souls of the living, the dead, and all the departed in between. Praying for the dead during the month of November is an expression of our faith in the resurrection; it is a loving prayer of intercession on behalf of our deceased relatives and friends, entrusting them to our loving and forgiving God, and that they are never forgotten and the pains of loss and the emptiness of death are healed. In loving memory of our beloved departed, an altar for the deceased is prepared. We invite you to bring with you pictures (not larger than 8 x 10 ) of your beloved deceased to be placed in the said altar. You may submit them either to the parish office during the coming week or in the church on or before October 31. On November 2nd we begin our annual All Souls Novena of Masses to pray for the souls of our faithful departed. Special envelopes to include your loved ones in the Novena are available in the Church and in the parish office. Please return the envelopes in the offertory baskets or to the parish office to include the names in the Novena. In all the Masses on November 4, Sunday, a special prayer and blessing of the altar of the departed will be said. You are also invited at this time to write the names of your departed loved ones in the Memorial Book located in the entrance of the Church. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Martin had nothing but his weapons and his clothes. He drew his sword, cut his cloak into two pieces, gave one piece to the beggar and wrapped himself in the other half. Some of the bystanders laughed at his now odd appearance; others were ashamed at not having relieved the man's misery themselves. That night in his sleep Martin saw Christ dressed in the half of the garment he had given away, and heard him say, "Martin, still a catechumen, has clothed me with this cloak." So it is told that St. Martin shared his own cloak with the needy man. We take the opportunity at the feast of St. Martin, our patron saint, to follow his example. Every year near our feast day, we ask for your help to the needy folks in our area before the cold of the winter months arrives. On November 10 and 11, you are invited to bring new or clean gently used coats, jackets, and sweatshirts to Saturday and Sunday masses. They will be sorted and distributed to our Food Box Community, and YOU will have upheld the tradition of St. Martin. WELCOME TO ALL WHO WORSHIP WITH US Whether you are a parishioner of long standing or new to the parish, if you are not registered, we invite you to do so. Faith Formation Corner We are now celebrating the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time and it is also Priesthood Sunday. This week we are going to hear from another of our newest Catholics! Albert received all his Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil this year. Below he shares a bit about his journey of faith: My name is Albert and I'm Catholic. I've waited many years to say that! Thank you for welcoming me and my family into this community. I am an active member of this community and will continue to do my part to build on the foundation of faith and help those in need. For starters, I've always wanted to be Catholic but never thought I was good enough. As result, I easily convinced myself for many years that I was not prepared to disappoint anyone, especially God, so I lived my life precariously until I was ready to walk the walk. Like some things, it takes something life changing to change our ways. For me, it was my daughter Isabella. When Bella was accepted into St. Martin, I knew I was ready to start walking the walk, so my decision to enroll in the RCIA process could not have come at a better time for me. At the time, I was looking for work. My main priority was to find something close to home, but with the flexibility to be with Bella as much as possible. After a couple of months, I made the decision to purchase a small mom-and-pop store in Capitola. It's not close to home but the biggest reward is the flexibility to be with Bella as much as possible, especially during these most important years! The reason I'm sharing this with you is to illustrate how God works, at least for me. Many years ago, people witnessed Jesus and his miracles. Having some time to reflect on my past, I'm convinced more than ever that God has been with me every step of the way, even when I wasn't ready to accept him. God opened doors for me and carried me through them, even when I was unsure. In my life time, I may not witness any miracles, but my faith in God is stronger than ever. God has placed me in situations to succeed but more importantly, and unbeknownst to me, guided me in the right direction every time. I could not have imagined this chapter in my book, but I'm exactly where God wants me. For me, this is miracle enough! At the end of the day, I owe it to the RCIA process to help me develop a spirit of humility, to embrace vulnerability and to accept the fact that I'm not in charge. The process taught me how to build a relationship with God and to realize that it will always be a journey of faith, at least for me. These days, I walk in the presence of God. -Albert Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA Inquiry has begun! Have you ever wanted to ask your most challenging questions in a safe space with others that are exploring whether the Catholic Church may be a place to call home? If so, we meet weekly in the Parish Office and all are welcome! Please contact Daniel for more info at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org HURRY HURRY HURRY.
