FROM OUR SENIOR RABBI PREPARE FOR THE HIGH HOLY DAYS By our American standards, the Holy Days are late this year. But as I like to say, Rosh Hashanah still begins on the First of Tishrei (the Jewish month) every year. It is right on time. The question for us to consider really in this month before the Holy Days is: Will we be late or on time in preparing ourselves spiritually for these meaningful and powerful days? None of us would walk into our jobs unprepared, and yet, we take time off of our jobs to attend the Holy Days without an ounce of preparation for what to expect or how to get the most out of it. If you come to services without having prepared, you will be late not too late, but late nonetheless. Allow me to suggest some ways to prepare for the Holy Days: 1. Take an inventory of everything you are proud of having done, accomplished or succeeded in doing during this past year. 2. Now, make a list of the things you are less proud of: a. Relationships that are in need of repair b. Things you did that no one knows but you, but you still feel badly about it c. Opportunities you missed because you were not your best self. Making these two lists alone will prepare you beautifully for the Ten Day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and our services will give us the answers of how to repair those broken spots in our lives and also encourage us to replicate the successes we have had. But if we want to go even deeper in our preparation, I suggest the following: 1. Read the Prayer Book before you come and focus on two or three prayers that are meaningful and work as guidance for you. 2. Imagine yourself in conversation with God a non-judgmental God, who simply wants to hear your words of regret and even more, your game plan for how to mend the torn parts of your life. 3. Breathe, take five minutes a day during the month of September (the Jewish month of Elul) to breathe. When you do, concentrate on your breath, breathe out negativity and breathe in positivity. In fact the same word in Hebrew is used for breath and soul neshama. Strengthen your soul by breathing out that which holds you back and breath in spiritual strength for being your best self. 4. Consciously be kind. If this is not your natural inclination, practice it. Only when we exercise do our muscles get stronger this is so for our emotions as well. Practice being kind. If you are inclined to say something hurtful, don t! If you are pushed to anger, evaluate if there is another way to handle the situation. If you are feeling cornered, get out of the corner until you can respond in a way that is consistent with whom you want to be. Practice Rabbi Richard Steinberg The Rona Perley Memorial Senior Rabbinic Chair won t make you perfect, but it will make you better and ready for the Holy Days. Finally, we must remember as our Prayer Book teaches, for sins against God, God forgives, but for sins from one person to another, only that person can forgive. This means the onus for seeking forgiveness is on the one who committed the error we need to prepare ourselves to have such encounters. Let s get to work! A LIFETIME OF BELONGING SEPTEMBER 2016 3

FROM OUR CANTOR Cantor Arie Shikler The Hollander Family Cantorial Chair When I first arrived in the US forty seven years ago the first leg was a two week stay in New York City. My impression of the Big Apple was big! The highest high rise I had ever seen before that was the Shalom Tower in Tel Aviv. I happened to work there on the 14th floor of a structure that had 28 floors total. At the time, it was the tallest building in the Middle East. Staying in Manhattan and walking everywhere was a physical exercise with the scale of the city. I remember asking someone where Macy s was and the person said Fifteen blocks and I walked and walked. In Israel fifteen blocks could be 20 minutes but New York, another story. It was December and I had not experienced cold weather like that before. After walking fifteen blocks I was so glad to find a department store and drop onto a chair so that I could recover. The department stores were huge to me and I was impressed by the amazing display of products. I had never seen a subway before or so many people on the street, not to mention cars, busses, and taxis. Overwhelming is not enough of a word to describe it. I walked up the Empire State Building and saw the city from up high, another dimension. I came from a noisy place but Ramat Gan had nothing on New York. My next stop and final destination was Los Angeles. California was a different kind of experience with its freeways and vastness. Everything was so spread out and I was told that in California you cannot survive without a car. I remember driving to Los Angeles for the first time on the freeway. I was so nervous I was shaking. There were so many lanes and so many cars and trucks, and advertising signs that distract you as you are searching for the exit sign you need. My first experience with Americans was at the University of Long Beach where I was enrolled. I found the people very polite, open and friendly. Everyone stood in line and followed the rules, something not so common in Israel. I was here right after the Six Day War when Israel was riding on high popularity. After taking classes for six months I was having lunch on the lawn with one of my classmates. His name was David Beaver and he had a Spanish accent. He asked me where I was from and if I was in the war. When I told him I fought in the Sinai he said I am Jewish. That surprised me completely. David went on to explain: I was growing up in East LA, and never told anyone that I m Jewish. But now after the Six Day War I m telling everyone! Another classmate who was from Alabama and had a heavy accent asked me if I was Jewish. When I confirmed he said when I was growing up we used to play a game called kill the Jews, I learned it from my daddy, but you are nice. Now, I d heard stories of anti-semitism from my dad and his experiences in his native Poland but growing up in a Jewish state you don t know that reality. After being here a while it dawned on me that we are a small minority. It also took some time to understand the American English accent. The teachers I had in High School where educated in the British accent and here people were rolling the words more. Before fast food became international we didn t have hamburger or pizza restaurants in Israel. The fast food experience is one I remember well. So many choices, so much advertising on TV! My fellow students took me to two places that offered food to eat as much as you can. There was a Smorgasbord Swedish restaurant around campus and a Shakey s Pizza that also had unlimited amounts of fried chicken you could eat. We could eat a lot in those days and I always wondered how they made money. My first day at the university campus the admission lady told me I was lucky to be able to see the San Bernardino Mountains. I said don t you always see them? She explained the smog and haze condition that exists most of the year. It was a winter day and the snow was visible on the range. Another thing that I discovered right away is that you cannot bargain in stores, something common in the Middle East. Also the prices were weird; $19.99, why? In Israel at the time all the prices were round numbers. My first impressions were also of the beautiful and amazing nature surrounding us all in one state. I loved trips to the desert, mountains, and the ocean with its coast, and the proximity to Mexico, another country. The easy availability to everything was the best; stores in the US open on Shabbat and the American way of life is easy and good. For the last eleven years we have been hosting a teenager from Israel for the summer. It has become a ritual in my family that my niece s sons spend a summer each with us before the end of high school and being drafted into the army. The first one, Dor, came when I was single and living in a cottage in north Laguna. He is a funny imitator and comedian with great facial expressions. I showed him around, took him to my favorite places and introduced him to my friends. My late bass player Tommy Rizzo lent him a wetsuit that was too long for him (Dor is tall) and taught him how to surf. He didn t last long in surfing though, couldn t take the cold water even with the suit. I am always interested to learn about one s impression of a new place and when I asked Dor about it he said, People are nice, almost too nice. You wonder if it is real or not. I liked the squirrels everywhere. The serious way people treat their jobs and how respectful others are to them. I 4 SEPTEMBER 2016 MEMORY MITZVAH MENTSCH MAKING MAKING MEANING

like the California girls! The fact that there is no smoking in most places. The cleanliness overall and the maintenance of the lawns and homes is outstanding. And kids, even little pip-squeeks, are not afraid of the ocean s waves. Everything is so big like Wal-Mart, and so industrious. Nadav, the second of the three boys came after Beth and I were married and bought a house on top of a hill about a three minute ride by car from downtown. I got him into the Maccabbi experience at the JCC and he participated in the jazz class where he learned jazz guitar. At the end of the course the participants gave a concert as a jazz band at Chapman University. Nadav made friends and had a great time at the J. He also spent time on the beach surfing and was pretty independent and reliable while staying with us. He took the trolley to the beach every day with his surfboard and backpack, ate lunch anywhere he wished and had a lot of fun. He particularly remembers the chocolate covered apples at this one store in Laguna. He was also very impressed with the order and organization of everything. Starting at the airport and on from there, everything looks manicured, clean and lots of green grass and palm trees. People are generally calm and easy going, they all look Ashkenazy. The mood is optimistic compared to the pessimistic one in Israel. He was impressed with all the new cars as they arrive in Israel five years after they debut here. The quality of life, prices, comfortable weather, easy life made an impression on him. He observed that people are more open and fluid, go with the flow with many subjects. He felt it was nice to get out of the bubble of Karmei Yosef where he lives. And of course, the girls in America are nicer. As I am writing this article, the last of the three boys is still with us. Oren turned sixteen while with us this summer. He is a surfer and guitar player. The minute he arrived he wanted to go surfing. We told him that this is not the Mediterranean but he was undeterred in his confidence. So we took him to The Wedge in Newport Beach during a high surf weekend. He was in awe when he saw the size and power of those waves, still not afraid. His dad Amir was still here and bought him a surfboard and a wetsuit. Our friend and congregant, Gary Greene, offered to take him to surf with him. To say that the Pacific Ocean humbled him would be an understatement. I don t think he caught one wave the first day. He spent a lot of energy paddling out! Never admitting anything that day, the next morning he came out of his room and told us his whole body was hurting. With daily visits to the beach he got better and now even the locals accept him. When he s not surfing he plays guitar or eats. He also likes the girls here and thinks they are prettier than the ones at home. He made friends at the beach as well. Oren is a good cook and when we are not home he takes care of himself. He is in love with bagels and sushi. I take him as I did his brothers to my sushi restaurant and he thinks it s the best restaurant in the world! There isn t an instrument in the house he hasn t played yet, and I have to admit he s pretty good at it. We call him Junior and I also call him Slim since he is tall and skinny. He also appreciates the order and how people line up and follow the rules. He is more into social media and his English is better than his brothers, though he has a tough time with the American accent. When we look at Junior it s hard to believe that in two years he ll be drafted into the Israeli army like his brothers before him. As he is enjoying the last week of his Endless Summer we hope the California experience will add to his life and to what is ahead for him. The ancients knew this, and music was a big part of the ancient temple ritual. FROM OUR CO-PRESIDENTS CHANGE IS COMING! ARE YOU READY? WE ARE!! BY: BETH CARROLL It s almost Fall and while the leaves won t turn here in Southern California until well into October, the season changing is very significant to us this year we are getting ready to pack up all our belongings prayer books, office supplies, furniture, dishes and our beloved Torah scrolls and prepare for the remodel of our current building and construction of the new facility. It s really here the start to the construction phase of the Building Project. As soon as the Shofar blows on Yom Kippur (October 12, 2016), we are erecting a fence around our property and the demolition process starts. There will be a lot of ways to get information about events, services, community activities, and school email, our newsletter, our website (shmtemple.org), Facebook, our new online community and social media postings (community.shmtemple.org) as well as postcards, letters, phone calls yes, every type of communication except Pony Express! A quick summary of locations and dates that you ll want to be aware of: SERVICES: Friday night and most Saturday morning services will be conducted at the Mormon Center at 23 Lake Road, Irvine. Through the great generosity of our Morman neighbors, we will have access to their beautiful Irvine facility for prayer and gathering. Please check the website for location for Saturday morning as there will be a few off-site services throughout the year. The information will be readily available. The first Friday Night service at the Mormon Center is planned for Friday, October 14 at 7:30 pm. TUESDAY HEBREW AND HIGH SCHOOL: We will be holding Tuesday night schools Hebrew and High School at the Back Bay Conference Center at 3415 Michelson, Irvine. This is a flexible facility on the second floor of the Irvine Lanes right next to Boomers. The first day of Tuesday Hebrew will be held at the Back Bay Conference Center and is scheduled on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. SUNDAY RELIGIOUS SCHOOL: Sunday School will be held at Tarbut V Torah s (TVT) lower school campus building at 5200 Bonita Canyon Road, Irvine. The school calendar will be published online as well as sent to parents in the Sunday School packets. There will be plenty of people there to guide you to your child s class room and gathering places for our parents and grandparents on opening day! The first day of Religious School will be held at TVT and is scheduled on Sunday, September 11, 2016. September is certainly shaping up to be an exciting lead up to the High Holy Days. Fun, fulfilling, educational, and uplifting events are sure to help us connect with each other, pray together, and grow together. Whether you re attending Friday night Shabbat services with insightful speakers such as Rabbi Peter Levi, Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League, our own Eileen Lenson sharing her wisdom on The Science of Forgiveness or our wonderful Rabbis come be inspired on Shabbat. The Brotherhood has a busy calendar this year: September s event is NFL Kickoff Party at Classic Q on September 11. NaShiM is hosting a Kick-Off Event on September 11 from 4-6 pm in the Art Studio at the Merage Jewish Community Center, Wine and Design. Finally, the must attend event of the month we are kicking off the construction phase of the Building Project with a wonderful event on September 30, 2016 at 7 pm. Beth Carroll & Rachel Harman-Friedman Temple Co-Presidents Building Update: Notice to Proceed with 50% Construction Documents was delivered to domusstudios mid July slightly behind original schedule as the Board evaluated the project budget, ways to reduce planned expenditures and came to agreement on a revised budget for the overall project of $11.5 million. Oltman Construction has begun the process of working with our Project Manager and collecting bids and lining up sub-contractors and suppliers for evaluation and agreements for the construction phase of the project, set to kick off right after Yom Kippur 2016. A review of potential additional energy efficiency and cost savings measures for lighting and power consumption is being conducted. The Campaign has raised $9.2 million to date and is continuing with efforts to raise additional funds. This letter of introduction, written by her during the summer, gives you a sense of why we are so excited to welcome Jordan to our SHM community. She is warm, fun, organized and creative. I am thrilled to become Shir Ha-Ma alot s Youth Director, and I look forward to getting to know the members of this wonderful community. Let me introduce myself. I am 24 years old, and am currently a Unit Head at one of the Reform movement s camps. That s no surprise, since I literally grew up at URJ camps. I went off to Camp Harlam in Pennsylvania when I was 8 and have never really looked back. I became a counselor and then a leadership staff member at Harlam, spent a summer as Program Director at Camp Kutz (the URJ/NFTY Leadership Academy), and this is my second summer in beautiful West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. I am also an alumna of the few URJ Youth programs, including the Eisendrath International Exchange (EIE) semester in Israel and Mitzvah Corps (ask me about working in New Orleans in the summer!). Helping people connect to, or find, their Judaism is my passion. I see it every day at camp, and I can t wait to see it at SHM. In addition to camp, I have worked in Jewish youth programs of every type. I staffed L Taken Teen Seminars in Washington, and NFTY Conventions in Los Angeles. I led regional events in Maryland and New Jersey. I was a College Ambassador at the URJ Biennial in Orlando last year. I taught religious school at a large congregation in New York City. In every position, my focus has been on providing meaningful, rich, and fun Jewish experiences. This May, I graduated from college with a major in communications. Writing, blogging, and photography are all among my favorite pastimes. I ve worked as both a reporter and a photographer for campus newspapers. I grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., and have long been a political junkie. My parents both of whom worked in politics took me door knocking while I was still being carried around in a backpack (although they tell me it was much better once I could walk). I have one brother who, to my amazement, is entering his senior year in college. Since my junior year of high school I have lived in Israel, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, Massachusetts and New York. Add bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Mix well. Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl and add to batter. Blend well. Pour 1/2 batter into greased 9 x 13 glass dish. Add 1/2 topping, then batter, then rest of the topping. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean.
