Orchid News Kentucky Orchid Society, Inc. April 2017 Louisville, KY Newsletter Editor: Gloria Teague, glorchid@iglou.com April Meeting Program: Peter Lin speaking on Angraecum, Aerangis and Aeranthes From the President Thursday, April 6, 2017 Immanuel United Church of Christ 2300 Taylorsville Road 6:30 pm, Social hour, 7:00 pm Meeting Good Morning All! What an interesting program we had last month. I believe this was our first live auction program and I believe it went quite well. Thank you Pat Zurschmeide for your donation of the plants. I had a very good time and I hope you all did too!! We also put in a display at the Greater Cincinnati Orchid Society Spring Show and our members did pretty well! The KOS entered 16 plants and we received 9 awards: Best of Class and a Blue ribbon, Den. Wenzelii form yellow, Pam LaRocco Blue ribbon, Aerangis (Aergs.) fastuosa, Ruth Schneider Blue ribbon, Phal NID small white, Ruth Schneider Blue ribbon, Unknown Phal white, Jan Smith Red ribbon, LC Lady Bug, Jan Smith Red ribbon, Cym NID, Ruth Schneider White ribbon, Burr. Gay Spice, Gwen Hartman White ribbon, Unknown Phal large white, Jan Smith

Congratulations to all the winners! Thanks to Pam LaRocco for help with the set up and to Sal Locascio and Rick and Danetta Willias for tear down. Thanks to Ruth Schneider for being our drop off point. You all make our participation possible to orchid shows. See everyone on Thursday, April 6 th. Gloria Teague, President From the Vice President We are pleased to announce our April speaker, Peter Lin from Diamond Orchids in Southern California. He is an avid orchid hobbyist, hybridizer and AOS judge. He lives in So. Cal and grows orchids in 3 small greenhouses. He grows primarily mini-cats, Sophronitis, Dendrobiums and miniature species. He has written articles for the Orchid Digest and Orchids magazines. Peter will be speaking on Angraecum, Aerangis and Aeranthes. We are sharing Peter with a couple of other Societies so our meeting date has changed. Our meeting is on April 6 th, 6:30 PM social half hour, 7:00 PM our Society meeting begins. We will be upstairs in the Fellowship Hall. There will be signs directing you upstairs. You can pre-order plants at www.diamondorchids.com and/or purchase plants at our meeting. Future speakers will be: May, Edgar Shelhi, Windswept in Time (from Michigan); June, Steve Benjamin, Oak Knob Orchids; July, and August, OPEN; September, Claude Hamilton, from Jamaican, speaking about Broghtnia hybrids and Caribbean orchids; October, KOS Show; November, OPEN; December, Christmas Dinner. Ruth Schneider, Vice President Minutes The KOS monthly meeting was held at the Immanuel Church of Christ on Wednesday March 8, 2017 at 7:00 pm. There were 20 members present. We welcomed new member Linda Solley-Knaive. The Treasurer s financial report was approved by the membership. Gloria Teague presented the February meeting minutes via the monthly newsletter. It was pointed out by a member that Under Show & Tell pictures there was a misidentification to one picture and incorrect spelling of an orchid name. It should have read: 1. Jumellea comorensis Casper is misspelled. This is the proper spelling and name of the plant 2. The picture labeled Angraecum sesquipedale is not sesquipedale. It s Jumellea comorensis Casper A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as corrected.

Old Business Gloria Teague announced the Central Indiana Orchid Club will hold a show in Indianapolis on April 21 23. We need a set-up and teardown crew volunteers so we can attend the show. Smokey Mountain Orchid Society in Knoxville will not have a show this year. A motion was made to ask Steve Benjamin to discuss show set-up prior to our next show to put us in the best light. Gwen Hartmann reminded us all that the Kentuckiensis is our clubs official orchid flower. Rick Willias, KOS Shoe Co-Chairman, asked for volunteers for the Show advertising committee Philomena Derenoncourt, Carla Cates, and Sal Locascio joined the team. New Business Ruth Schneider announced upcoming speaker for April will be Mr. Peter Lin a grower from California. Ruth proposed that our APRIL meeting be held on Thursday APRIL 6 th instead of our normal meeting date of April 12th. This will make it easier for our speaker to make it. Linda Solley-Knaive volunteered to contact the Louisville zoo regarding our participation in there Earth Day celebration. At this point an auction of 20 donated plants was held for our membership.
