NEXT CHURCH WORK DAY- Saturday 27 th May from 1-5pm *Please note new time* Mother s Day in Australia follows many of the traditions of similar days in the US and United Kingdom, all being held on the second Sunday of May and marked by giving of gifts. However, it is an Australian, Janet Heyden from Sydney, who is credited (or blamed) as having started the tradition of giving gifts when in 1924 she collected gifts for lonely, aged mothers. However, Mothering Sunday had been celebrated in the church much earlier, going back to at least the 16th century. At least initially, it was not to do with mothers. It was a church festival held on the 4th Sunday in Lent and consisted of a pilgrimage to the mother church that birthed you and incubated your faith. On the fourth Sunday in Lent, the faithful were to return either to their 'mother church' - either the main church in their village, the cathedral in their home area, or to the church in which they had been baptised. To attend that church on that Sunday was to go amothering. Later on, in both the Anglican and Catholic traditions, mothering Sunday was a unique day when those young people who were in service, that is household servants, were given a day off to visit not only their mother church, but their own mothers, their own family, as well. For domestic servants, many of whom were young children, this might mark the only day of the year when all family members could be together once again. Sighting Jesus: Mary Magdalene This Sunday in our series, Sighting Jesus, we will look at one of the remarkable women who first saw and met the resurrected Jesus, Mary Magdalene. Mary is a woman who has been the subject of much wild speculation over the years, including Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code". Speculation aside, she is a woman from whom we can all learn and be inspired by. STATE YOUTH GAMES To be held in Bunbury Friday June 2 nd to Monday June 5 th. For young adults between 16 and 28 years of age. The sign up link is Adult volunteers are also needed for a day or the whole weekend. Support our young adults. Roles include refereeing, scoring, coordinating a sport, first aid, filming, and setting up for the rally on Saturday night. Contact Erin for more information. Uniting Church 40th Anniversary The leaders of the Uniting Church, including our Moderator, Steve Francis and General Secretary, David de Kock will be meeting in Melbourne for 40 hours of prayer from this Sunday at 3pm to 8am on Tuesday to pray for the continuing life and renewal of the Uniting Church. Can I encourage you to join with them in prayer, not just for those 3 days, but for the 40 days leading up to the anniversary of the church. During this time, pray for renewal of ourselves, our communities, our world and our Church. PRAYERS AFTER THE 9.30AM SUNDAY SERVICE IN PRAYER CHAPEL The Prayer Chapel at the West end of the sanctuary is available for anyone wanting to pray or to receive prayers. 4 John Deutscher today 14/5. NEDLANDS/CLAREMONT RAINBOW LUNCH The next lunch will be held on Thursday June 1 at Claremont Baptist Church (Stirling Highway opposite Hungry Jacks). Lunches are held on the first Thursday of every month. Fellowship and help is provided for people with mental health issues and helpers. WEST TIMOR PROJECTS-Uniting World (UW), the Uniting Church overseas mission agency, is administering a few projects in West Timor. At present NUC is supporting two of these projects. 1. In partnership with UW, we support students to undertake tertiary studies in theology and other fields that may be economically important, at the Christian University in Kupang (UKAW). NUC is already helping ten students studying; paying their University fees, student accommodation and living expenses. 2. NUC also supports UW s Micro-Finance project to provide loans to families and community groups to expand their small businesses in West Timor. Donations to this project qualify for a tax deduction. Donations can be made to these projects by: Placing your donation in the box in the foyer; indicating the project you wish to support and making cheques payable to Nedlands Uniting Church West Timor Account; or Sending your donations directly to the bank account, details of which are available in the foyer.
