1 The WORD July 2017 Brobdingnagian Words Nekoosa United Church of Christ (the church by the bridge) Rev. Timothy Miller, Pastor 205 Market street Nekoosa, WI Sunday Worship: 9:30 am Fellowship follows Worship Office Hours: Mon Fri 9:00 am 2:00 pm Pastor s Hours: Mon 12:00 noon 6:00 pm Tues Thur 9:00 am 2:00 pm office@nekoosaucc.com pastor@nekoosaucc.com Web Site: In Seminary we were bombarded with big theological words that we had never heard before. I carried a pocket dictionary of theological terms with me daily. If the description wasn t in the pocket one, I would jot the word down and look up the description when I got back to my dorm room in the big dictionary. Sometimes I would have to Google it. The next day I would use the new word in my conversations with my friends until they would either ask what it meant or walk away. To my surprise my young friend Charles would often know and understand the words as if they were everyday conversation words. I was non-plussed with his extensive and bazaar knowledge of weird words. My favorite word I liked to use on unsuspecting victims who would ask me, what do you do for a living? My response would be, I m an Ontologist. I don t think that is a real occupation but if it were, I would be really good at it. The definition would loosely translate into One who studies being. I like times of just being. I can sit or walk for long periods of time without talking, listening, and even thinking; just being. This drives certain extroverts absolutely non compos mentis. I ve actually had several clergy come right out at different events and ask me why I wasn t talking. I m not sure why but many Ministers like to talk, a lot. My answer to them when they ask is that I m feeling a little ontologically today. I don t have many friends. It does concern me that so many people will talk and talk without listening to others. It reminds me of the quote, I don t want to be rude but I m only going to listen to you if you can guarantee me that it will be more beneficial to me than enjoying the silence. Of course I m just being jocular with you; I like to listen to people. My concern is that we are not listening for underlying tones or subtleties found in face to face conversation. Many of us communicate through s, texts, snapchat, Facebook, and apparently some really like tweeting. Don t get me wrong, these are quick and easy ways to communicate but are we absorbing the mood, the fear, the uncertainty or the hopelessness that may be underlying behind the mere words? (Continued on next page)
2 I hope we never get so busy that we can t sit down together and chat over a cup of coffee. Even with all the technology advancements of the day, sometimes you just can t beat a simple conversation face to face; listening, holding a hand or giving a hug and sharing stories over a cup of coffee together! If you would like a listening ear, please let me know and start the coffee pot I d love to learn more about you. I ll be waiting for you to set up a time when we can talk! Peace and Love, Pastor Tim 2017 Dues Are Due As a church in the United Church of Christ, we use and support the services provided by the Wisconsin Conference UCC and the Northwest Association. Part of belonging to a denomination, is paying for the services offered by the denomination. We are charged a per-member fee from both the Conference and the NW Association and it is each individual member s responsibility to pay that fee. The total this year is $20.75 per member. SHOUT OUT to Melani Johnson & Gary Fischer. They seem to know something about everything and willingly share their knowledge with the church, saving us time and money. SHOUT OUT Big Shout Out to the ladies in the office for reviewing the monthly Council Minutes. I appreciate it greatly. Submitted by Laurie Kaehn SHOUT OUT to all those who give of their time to come in and work at funerals. Setting up, serving and cleaning up requires time & labor. Thanks to those who help. SHOUT OUT to Tom Kirst who also gives of his time to run the sound system for funerals, weddings, etc. SHOUT OUT to Pastor Tim for making time for others and being compassionate and caring even when he is already booked solid. Special Music The music committee is looking for volunteers to provide special music for the summer worship services. The choir is taking a well-deserved break. Music is a vital part of worship, whether it is vocal or instrumental. If you are interested or know of someone who would be, please sign up on the sheet in the narthex. You may also contact the church office, Lynette Hilgers or Melody Moody-Zuege with suggestions. ************************* Summer Coffee Hour Summer will soon be upon us. Many will be on a vacation or out of town on weekends. The Diaconate is looking for individuals or families that would be willing to provide treats for a Sunday Coffee Fellowship. Description of task: Set up and serve coffee and treats whether purchased or homemade. If purchasing treats, there are funds available for you to be reimbursed. If you are unfamiliar with the dishwasher, there are many who would be willing to help with that part of it, just let the office know. A sign-up sheet is in the narthex. ******************************
5 I once again had the opportunity to go to the Wisconsin Conference UCC annual meeting in Green Lake. The accommodations are spacious, the food delicious, the speakers are inspiring, and the friends you see, maybe once a year, are just an extra bonus. Everyone should take the opportunity to go! Because of my bad back I was not able to get to all the exhibits I wanted to see but I did get to the plenary session where by an overwhelming vote we declared ourselves an Immigrant Welcoming Conference. It was interesting listening to the discussions that took place before the vote. A lot of people did a lot of research before the motion was presented. The Honorable Rev. Everett Mitchell, Dane county circuit court judge and pastor of Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church, gave a stirring message about racial justice, encouraging us to study and understand the systemic effects of "white privilege" and reach out with the intentionality of fostering interracial relationships. This is a quote from the June 22 Wisconsin Conference UCC newsletter that you can read online. He was very good. We missed the Sunday worship because I had to be back for our Youth Group meeting. I would encourage anyone, who has an interest in our church or would like to learn more about what we are, to attend the conference next year. Stop in the office any Tuesday or Thursday and I will fill you in on what it s about. Submitted by Marcia Kumm SUNDAY, JULY 16, 2017 GAME TIME: 4:05 p.m. TICKETS - $10.50 if you are signed up stop in the office to pick up your tickets. ************************************* VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JULY 31- AUGUST 3. 5:00 8:00 pm Something for everyone dinner, opening songs, crafts, games, Bible stories, closing celebration, lots of FUN!!!
