(In addition to meeting the Pledge, please see Treasurer Lori s article the total district UMW giving in 2017.) Your generosity is truly awesome! Keep in mind this does not reflect giving to local and other giving not channeled through the district UMW.) 3 Northern Highlights 2018 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page : Year of Outstanding Giving North District United Methodist Women really know how to exceed a PLEDGE--For 2017, we exceeded our pledge of $ 70,000 by $ 11,059!!! The total giving to Conference from the North District was $ 104,682!! That is outstanding! Thank you to all who made this possible!!! This has been such an exciting first year as your district treasurer -- I attended several district team leadership meetings, spiritual growth retreat, Mission u, Fall District meeting, district training for officers, training for local officers, and the Faith Elkhart UMW local unit's meeting. I have learned a lot about UMW missions and met many warm and kind ladies! I encourage you to attend as many events this year as you can to learn about the amazing mission work that is being done around the world and to meet others who share the love of God and others! Lori St Pierre 760 Lana Oaks Dr. Chesterton, IN lastpierre56@gmail.com Vice President s Greeting to Dear Sisters in Christ The events of recent months and weeks have once again reminded me how important trust in our Lord is in all circumstances. So much suffering around the world and on our own soil breaks our hearts and spirits all too often. It is difficult to remember that God sees the big picture and Jesus instructed us to trust God. As we look forward to the months and days ahead, perhaps as United Methodist Women (and as Vice-Presidents) we can address some of the suffering, pain and anguish by presenting positive and uplifting programs to our units. We can use the Program Book to give us direction, but also follow God s leading in how we approach each subject. At the Local Officer Training this past November we gathered as vice-presidents and shared ideas on programs and resources. Looking at the facts and seeking God s hand in our discussions has a positive, caring effect on our companions and ourselves. Rejoicing in the opportunities God gives us to care about each other, listen to each other, minister to each other and celebrate each other s lives might just make it easier to trust and to encourage us in our faith walks. We can also turn to response magazine to see how other units are responding to the issues that challenge us to remain trustful in our God. Each of us has the opportunity to educate, share, and comfort the hurting and beaten-down in our own neighborhoods. In fact, the District Spring meeting on Saturday, April 14 will be just such an opportunity. Felicia Stewart will share information on Maternal and Child Health as one of the areas of focus this year. She will offer us a good perspective on the issue so that we, in turn, may share with our own unit parts of this vital issue. (The details and registration form are found elsewhere in this newsletter.) We receive a great blessing when we gather as Christian women to share our faith and God s unending love. We will also celebrate the unit successes in missions and reading as well as sharing Communion once again. Please make time to encourage your unit to be part of the extended United Methodist Women dialogue. Blessings Always, Susan Eggleston North District Vice-President

4 Page 4 Social Action ADVOCATE (Verb) ADVOCATE (Noun) Advocate...this is what we are called to do as Social Action Coordinators, as Christians and caring human beings. So... What does mean to ADVOCATE? What does it mean to be an ADVOCATE? What should I ADVOCATE? Why should I ADVOCATE? Advocate I John 2:1 How do I ADVOCATE? Let's take a look at some definitions of the word advocate, noun and verb. Advocate (noun) - One who intercedes in behalf of another and is used to refer to Christ interceding with the Father on behalf of sinners. Even now my witness in heaven, my advocate is on high. Job 16:19 NIV (Taken from the Holman Bible dictionary.studylight.org) Advocate (noun) - A person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy. A person who pleads for or in behalf of another- intercessor. Synonyms: supporter, fighter, spokesperson, apostle. Advocate (verb) -To act as an advocate, to speak or write in favor of. Synonyms: recommend, advise, urge, support, champion, promote. (Taken from the Merriam-Webster dictionary). So, we see that the definitions are very similar. That brings us to the WHAT, WHY AND HOW of advocacy. At the Fall UMW officer training meeting I had the pleasure of meeting women who are social action representatives for their churches. Women who have hearts full of love for the Lord and women with the desire to be an advocate the one who pleads in behalf of another. Continued on next page

5 Page 5 Social Action, continued from previous page... Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of those who are destitute. Proverbs 31:8 NIV WHY? These women had already answered the why... to be disciples of Christ love. To be a light to someone in some way. To make a difference, no matter how small in their churches and communities or in the life of someone who might not have anyone who cares. WHAT? What can I do? In my folder of information that I give to the social action coordinators I include a booklet, published by Unitedmethodistwomen.org, titled, Why Should I Get Involved in Social Issues? It is explained in five steps: 1. Choose an issue: Opportunities are everywhere. Your church, your community. You don't have to look far. United Methodist Women nationally are leading the way in many social issues. Examples - Racial Justice, Economic Justice, Health care for women and children. Just to name a few, for more info. visit inumw.org and search advocacy. 2. Narrow your search: Social problems can be vast and over whelming. Find an issue and focus on an aspect that interests you, something manageable. 3. Learn all you can: Knowledge is power. Ask for help, network with others. 4. Plan of action: Set realistic goals. Start small. Volunteer with an organization and learn how they are advocating. 5. Act: Educate others, get the word out, get people involved. ADVOCATE!!!!!!!!! Let's not forget prayer. Remember prayer is powerful. It lifts us up, it helps us persevere. It keeps us focused and gives the glory to God. I know so many of you wonderful United Methodist Women are doing amazing works out there! You are advocating and may not even realize it. You are advocating for the least of us. I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Matthew 25:40 NIV Thank you and may the peace of God be with you. P.S. Please stop by and say hello at the Annual Spring meeting. Registration on page 12. Debbie Bremer, Social Action dlynnbremer@comcast.net

7 Northern Highlights 2018 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 7 Plain and Striped Newborn Purple Knitted Hat This is a modification of the baby hat pattern once published on the IWK website. This hat is favored by the hospital nurses because of the foldable brim that gently hugs a baby's head. See sizing tips at end of page. Materials: DK weight (Light #3) soft acrylic yarn in purple (MC), 43m (47 yds), and green (CC) 6m (7 yds); 3.25 mm (US#3) and 4 mm (US#6) double-pointed needles, tapestry needle, 1 stitch marker PLEASE NOTE: the hat's cast-on edge must be very stretchy to fit comfortably over a baby's head. Please follow cast-on instructions. This pattern is written for a smooth, 'jogless' color change. Abbreviations: k = knit, p = purl, p1-tbl = purl through the back loop k2tog = knit 2 stitches together, sl (slip)= transfer a stitch purlwise from the left, needle to the right without knitting, sts = stitches, MC = main color, CC = contrast color Gauge: 23 sts and 32 rnds over 4" in stockinette st on larger needles Head circumference: 14.5 inches, average newborn size. Pattern Note: Do not cut the contrasting color between stripes; carry up the inside. With two smaller needles held together, cast on 60 sts using MC yarn. Pull one needle out. Distribute sts evenly on 3 double-pointed needles (20 on each); mark beginning of round and join, being careful not to twist. Rnds 1-22: K1, p1-tbl. Switch to larger needles Rnds 23-28: MC. Knit. Rnd 29: CC. Knit. Rnd 30: Sl 1, knit to end. Rnd 31: MC. Knit. Rnd 32: Sl 1, knit to end. Rnds 33-34: Knit. Rnd 35: CC. Knit. Rnd 36: Sl 1, knit to end. Rnd 37: MC. Knit. Rnd 38: Sl 1, knit to end. (12 sts) Rnd 54: (K2tog) 6 times. (6 sts) Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Using tapestry needle, thread tail through remaining sts and pull tight. Sizing tip: change the size by adjusting the cast-on number by 6 sts. The decreases are worked over 6 sections (2 sections on each of 3 needles). Calculate the number of stitches in each section when you start decreasing (Rnd43) and work knit to last 2 sts of section, k2tog, in each section, alternating decrease and knit rounds until you have 42 sts left. Then follow the pattern as given above, starting from Rnd48.

Those women raised money to send a doctor, Clara Swain, and a teacher, Isabella Thoburn, to India as missionaries to serve the women of that nation. Since then, for nearly 150 years, United Methodist Women has evolved to become the largest women's faith-based service and advocacy organization, underwriting programs that provide life-changing opportunities for women, children and youth. Generous donors have committed funds to leverage and grow the gifts received on Day of Giving, March 23, Your gift can have an even greater impact when you contribute to The Legacy Fund Endowment Campaign on Day of Giving! So, ladies, join in for a wonderful ride into the future because we (district and conference) are IN! See you at the district meeting and hopefully you have your reservations in for Assembly. In the words of Oswald Chambers: Arise, let us go hence. John 14:31 The Initiative Against Dreaming Dreaming about a thing in order to do it properly is right; but: dreaming about it when we should be doing it is wrong. After Our Lord had said those wonderful things to His disciples, we might have expected that He would tell them to go away and meditate over them all; but Our Lord never allowed mooning. When we are getting into contact with God in order to find out what He wants, dreaming is right; but when we are inclined to spend our time in dreaming over what we have been told to do, it is a bad thing and God s blessing is never on it. God s initiative is always in the nature of a stab against this kind of dreaming, the stab that bids us neither sit nor stand but go. If we are quietly waiting before God and He has said Come ye yourselves apart, then that is meditation before God in order to get at the line He wants; but always beware of giving over to mere dreaming when once God has spoken. Leave Him to be the source of all your dreams and joys and delights, and go out and obey what He has said. If you are in love, you do not sit down and dream about the one you love all the time, you go and do something for him; and that is what Jesus Christ expects us to do. Dreaming after God has spoken is an indication that we do not trust Him. The Bible does not thrill; the Bible nourishes. Give time to the reading of the Bible and the recreating effect is as real as that of fresh air physically. Blessings always, Maureen

10 Page 10 Reading Program Encourages Growth Sometimes I wonder who picks the books for the United Methodist Women. I wonder because I believe they pick such timely and interesting books. Books that encourage us to look at our society and faith. Books that introduce us to things that make us aware of the world that God wants us to explore. Here are a few that have caught my eye. I plan to enjoy and learn. Rachelle Ruge-Bernard Program Resources Rugebernard@yahoo.com President s Note: Welcome to Rachelle Ruge-Bernard, North District s Secretary of Program Resources. She challenges us to read. Be sure to introduce yourself to her and shop her display at the UMW Spring Meeting at Plymouth Trinity April 14. Abundant Blessing: Rewards for Serving Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart. As United Methodist Women we sing this song, and it pulls at our hearts. I wonder how many of you have felt God s call to serve on the North District board? The Committee on Nomination is always looking for women to serve North District UMW. Presently, a communication coordinator is needed as well as CON members. Additionally, many other positions will become available in 2019 as current officers complete their terms of service. Please let me or any Committee on Nomination member know if you, or someone you know, could give of your /their time and abilities. Serving United Methodist Women provides many opportunities for transformational education, spiritual growth, and leadership development. Duties include leadership team meetings, helping to plan Spring and Fall District meetings. Officers are expected to attend Mission u. Abundant blessings are the rewards for serving! Might God be calling you to follow His lead? May He bless you as you open yourself by responding to share your gifts of service and talents with the district. 11 Spiritual Bloodline Northern Highlights 2018 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 11 Everyone is looking into genetic makeup. Scientists, doctors, news media, and law enforcement agents, to name a few, are studying the connection in some blood lines habits, home training, even beliefs, that create or manifest itself with certain behaviors. If the bloodline or genetics within your generational family history is noted for heart disease, cancer, diabetics, then it could continue unless some changes are made through possibly eating habits, exercise or whatever the doctor advises. One of the main contributors of these changes is education; we believe what we read in medical pamphlets, go online to learn as much as we can. After a little research, we begin to view the situation through different lens and begin to understand things differently. Very often things begin to improve so we change our perception of things, our beliefs and understanding. Are these same genetic DNA or generational issues identical to training as a child being raised in a house or community where bigotry, prejudice, narrow-mindedness, or hatred of those who are not like them, simply because that's the way it has always been in family training or practices? I wonder if some of us are plagued with a bloodline issue. I wonder if certain behaviors, teachings, beliefs and practices are a matter of generational genetics. It is possible that some have not been taught or have not educated themselves in those areas or have not taught their children to consider that we all are brothers and sisters of His (God s) world. Through our spiritual connection, the Blood of Christ does change our way of thinking. Perhaps some have not read the Constitution as being the supreme laws of the land or taken that seriously. What about words from the song America: "Sweet land of liberty... let freedom ring? Or from America the Beautiful: God shed His Grace on thee and crown thy good with brotherhood? However, either some have not read the Bible, (though are professed Christians with ties and relationships to Jesus, through His Blood ) or choose to omit, ignore or skip over passages of scripture that denounce certain kinds of conduct, behavior and practices scriptures that ask us how can we say love Him whom we have never seen, yet hate our fellowman. Or those passages that tells us we are made in His image and whatever we do to the least of these we also do to Him. What happened to love your neighbor, the second greatest commandment? I feel so blessed and humbled for being a part of the" Spiritual Bloodline", of the Great Organization of United Methodist Women women who are, and have been, praying and fighting for equality for all people, in all ways, in all the times they have since the 1800 s with " faith, hope and love in action". Thanks be to God! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in one of his speeches said, Cowardice ask the question, ls it safe? Expedience ask the question, ls it politic? Vanity ask the question, ls it popular? But Conscience ask the question, Is it right? And there comes a time one must take a position that, it is neither safe, politic, nor popular, but one must take it simply because, it is right! I often heard my mother say, "what is right is right and right does not wrong anyone".
