Saint Alban s Herald, June, Saint Alban s Herald is published monthly in electronic and print styles by St. Alban s Episcopal Church, 302 St.Alban's Drive Salisbury, MD The Very Rev. Dr. Frieda L. Malcolm is Rector. Phone the parish office at , or e mail the parish office at stalbanssalisbury@gmail.com. The church Website is Submit ar cles and other informa on electronically to the parish office. Deadline is the 3rd Sunday of the month. St. Alban's: Christ-centered, radically embracing people and creation This is our identity as a parish, which we articulated with these words last year. We endeavor to follow Christ in welcoming all sorts and conditions of [humanity]. We offer baptism and eucharist to all, and the pastoral offices of reconciliation, ministry to the sick, and Christian burial to those who ask. We do not discriminate with regard to gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation or identity, or mental capacity. With regard to marriage, our policy is to meet all couples desiring a Christian wedding. The legal requirements, both civil and church, must be met. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender. However, the clergy may decline to officiate for other reasons. On JUNE 3 we begin our Summer Schedule, which is one service every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. through August 19. This is a Eucharist service with the organ and ALL ARE WELCOME.

3 Saint Alban s Herald, June 2018 Frieda s Place Summer Spiritual Growth Challenge! Jay Sidebotham, the creator of the fun cartoons on the calendar that adorns the Rector's office door, led the clergy retreat for the Diocese of Easton in May. Jay has been a parish priest for many years, and for the last five years has led a program from Forward Movement called RenewalWorks. This program helps congregations grow in spiritual practices and depth, which in turn helps to spread the love of God through Jesus Christ into the world around us. The research of his organization, which has studied congregations of many denominations and non-denominational congregations, including about 200 Episcopal churches, indicates that many people are looking for help connecting God/the Bible with their church and personal lives. One congregation responded by posting Bible verses appropriate to various locations and activities around their church building and parish hall. This gave me an idea for St. Alban's: match a Bible passage or a hymn text to as many of your daily activities as you can, from the time you wake up till you go to bed at night. Take your time over the summer to consider a story or a phrase or a hymn that motivates you to do what you do, whether it's work, volunteering, taking care of yourself or resting and relaxing. Make a list, and send it to me snail mail or . If you are willing, include a sentence or two about how this exercise has brought you closer to God or to other people. I hope you will share this challenge with others, and pray that it brings joy to all!

5 Saint Alban s Herald, June, 2018 Join St. Alban s 2020 Vision capital campaign today! 2020 Vision Capital Campaign Please join us in our goal to meet St. Alban s 2020 Vision capital campaign by making your pledge now! With our large corner lot, St. Alban s is in a unique position to provide a public place for our neighbors and friends, many of whom live in areas without easy access to parks or other similar outdoor activities. Much of our St Alban s 2020 Vision capital campaign focuses on improvement of our outdoor space including the creation of a rain garden with signage and walking paths. The rain garden will feature thirsty native plants. These plants will provide natural beauty and reduce rainwater runoff into the Chesapeake Bay. The rain garden will be designed in cooperation with students from Salisbury University, and will be built with help from students from Wicomico High School. The campaign will also replenish funds recently spent on the purchase of the solar panels, modernization of our organ and rebuilding of our chancel floor. These projects were all completed with money borrowed from other accounts at St Alban s. The campaign will also allow for work to be done on our labyrinth, the surface of which has deteriorated badly. The scope of our 2020 vision campaign is $125,000. Through May, we have raised more than $69,000 in pledges. Please join us by making your pledge today. Pledge forms are available in the office, or your pledge can be ed to Gregory Glass at gregory_glass@yahoo.com. If you have further questions please see a member of the St Albans 2020 vision capital campaign committee before or after church: Alisha King, Sandy Grim, Rod Layton, Carrie Connelly or Gregory Glass.

7 Saint Alban s Herald, June, 2018 World Environmental Day 2018 India is the global host of 2018 World Environment Day which will take place on June 5, With Beat Plastic Pollution as the theme for this year s edition, the world is coming together to combat single-use plastic pollution. Plastic Pollution facts: Every year the world uses 500 billion plastic bags Each year, at least 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, the equivalent of a full garbage truck every minute. In the last decade, we produced more plastic than in the whole last century 50 percent of the plastic we use is single-use or disposable We buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute Plastic makes up 10% of all of the waste we generate For more information about World Environment Day and Plastic Pollution, visit:

Saint Alban s Herald, June, Summer LOVE Project Arlene White We still need your help as we continue to work on St. Alban s LOVE project throughout the summer. Have you looked at the bulletin board in the parish hall? Are there organizations there that you help? Are there others that we need to add? We can only do that by getting the information from YOU from the LOVE Project survey forms available in the basket in the breezeway. Do you bring in food items to donate to Joseph House or the WiHi Pantry? If so, you are sharing your LOVE in the community! Have you helped with the clean up at Ben s Red Swings or helped with the Ben Layton Memorial 5K in some way? If so, you are sharing your LOVE in the community! Remember that we are also looking for pictures so if you take any that show how you are working to show God s LOVE in the community, please send them to kindnesspix@gmail.com Mark with your name and a brief description of the event, time and place. Brett

9 Saint Alban s Herald, June, 2018 Senior Warden s Letter Arlene White In most of our jobs or lives, we find the term accountability every so often. The same is true for the life of the church. We participate in the MUTUAL MINISTRY REFLECTON each year. Vestry members and Frieda are asked to reflect upon the life of the church, what we have each done over the course of the last year, how the congregation is faring, how are we living out what is found on the back of our bulletin every week: St. Alban s: Christ-Centered, Radically Embracing People and Creation. Our process this year was facilitated by Rev. Marianne Ell. She reviewed our responses to a survey along with those of Audrey Rivers and Vic Evans as representatives of the parish as a whole and Beth Jones and Alisha King as past Vestry wardens. A smaller group from the original 14 met after church last Sunday to chat, reflect, brainstorm about the path we are on and where it might take us. The meeting was also to serve as a springboard for further discussion at the Vestry retreat planned for June 9 th. There we will review the goals that were set for this year, where we are vis-à-vis reaching them and where we still might want to go, all with a mind of seeking your input as well before final decisions are made. This is a challenging, yet exciting process! As Senior Warden, I am pleased to report that on the whole, we are in a great place with a caring and supportive congregation which is trying to truly live out what we proclaim to the community. We have an exceptionally gifted priest. All of us seem to be pulling in the same direction, with some extraordinary outcomes! Look at our newly designed nave, our refurbished organ, the partnerships we have established in the community we are truly blessed and are faithful in sharing those blessings with others.

Saint Alban s Herald, June, Maggie O Grady Congratulations Graduates! Rebecca Jones-Hochmuth Tony Herrera Katherine Cottingham Benediction for the 2018 Graduates (and the rest of us as well) May God your Creator continue to mold you into the perfectly unique persons you are created to be; May God the Beloved forgive all your failures and surround you with love; May God who is Wisdom guide you to make good choices for yourselves and for the common good; That your lives may be full of joy and fruitfulness, and this community and the world may become a place of everlasting peace and blessing. Amen. Written and delivered by Frieda Malcolm at Parkside High School's Baccalaureate May 21, 2018

Mark your calendar NOW! Start saving money to shop NOW! One of our most loved and sought after items will be back SERVICES and GIFT CARDS. What can you do? Talk to people whom you know who are talented and gifted at walking dogs, baking cookies, weeding flowers beds, providing transportation to the dump or other interesting places, making delicious and hand delivered meals these services have always been in great demand! What can you do? Whom can you talk to who will offer a service? What about gift cards? Do you frequent any businesses which would like to donate a gift card and get some extra publicity? Maybe your hairdresser or mechanic or massage therapist? Would you be willing to purchase and offer a gift card maybe from a favorite place? In the past, we have had lots of gift cards from food establishments or coffee spots, maybe memberships, car washes, movies or something from Barnes & Noble for the many booklovers we have in the congregation. Auction co-chairs this year are Debbie Rossi and Arlene White. They will be glad to brainstorm with you if you need ideas!

Saint Alban s Herald, June, COUSINS FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY By Sharon Walsh St. Alban s is fortunate that a Haitian family has chosen our congregation as their new church home. Daniel Cadet (pronounced kah day), his cousin Widmy Joseph, and Widmy s mother, Andrea Joseph, have become regular worshippers at our 10:30 Sunday service. Daniel can often be seen singing in the tenor section of the choir. Daniel and Widmy both came from Port-au-Prince about a year ago, although Widmy proudly points out he arrived a month or so before Daniel. Daniel is the older cousin at age 28 and came to the United States to improve my life and pursue my dream. Daniel graduated from medical school in Haiti and his dream is to gain admission to an internship in an American hospital. However, although he applied nearly a year ago for a change in his immigration status, there has been no action taken by the INS. This makes it difficult for him to make plans for further study. Eventually he hopes to specialize in either gynecology or surgery. If he doesn t receive a visa giving him more permanent status by July, he will probably return to Haiti and continue his training there. He spends most of his time these days studying for the exams he will need to take in the U.S. in order to be admitted to an internship. Daniel says he doesn t have much leisure time in the U.S. because of his intensive studies, but in Haiti he was the captain of his high school and college soccer teams, playing forward position. He also sang in his Baptist church choir. Another pastime in Haiti was playing the piano. Daniel has a girlfriend, Kathie, who is a nurse in Haiti. As a relative newcomer to St. Alban s, Daniel appreciates that the people are really friendly and it s a good place to use English which I really like. Daniel s cousin, Widmy, is nearly 19 and is a junior at Bennett High School which he finds easier than school in Haiti. Widmy lives with his mother, his aunt (Daniel s mother), Daniel and Daniel s younger brother in Salisbury. Widmy s father, two sisters and a brother remain in Haiti, but he has one sister in Canada and another who lives nearby in Fruitland. Widmy hopes to become a pilot or computer engineer or programmer and to attend Salisbury University after his graduation from Bennett. Widmy enjoys learning things on the computer, especially programs that help him improve his English skills. Widmy doesn t want Daniel to return to Haiti because he likes the time that they spend learning together, and he would miss the times that Daniel gives him a hand with his homework. Widmy, who attended the Catholic church in Haiti, likes St. Alban s because the people are nice and I really like the service. I understand Jesus better. We warmly welcome Daniel and Widmy to St. Alban s and wish them the best in their studies and careers.

13 Saint Alban s Herald, June,. Living Compass Goes to Wi Hi During the month of May, Frieda Malcolm and Rebecca Raygor led a class on Living Well in the Midst of Grief for students at Wi Hi. Each of the participants have experienced the death of a parent, but didn't know that the other students had. The class offered a sense of community, a recognition of the pain and difficulties of living with this significant loss, and strategies to live more healthily as healing takes place. This is what we hope is the first of several wellness groups offered to students as part of our Faith/School Partnership and our commitment to helping our community to respond in healthy ways to the struggles we often face in our lives.

Saint Alban s Herald, June, Summer at The Retreat House Hello St Alban's, There is really nothing like a walk on The Retreat House grounds. In the presence of the tall pines, cedars and fragrant magnolias, one feels the comfort of being with old friends. Visitors often tell me that they have a strong sense of belonging and happiness when they are here. What joy it is to hear about the many spiritual experiences that take place at The Retreat House! In June, we will celebrate summer with two special programs and also introduce a monthly service of prayer for reconciliation. Please take a look at our calendar and plan a visit soon or come on a whim--the gate is always open! Sincerely, Francie Thayer
