4 III. 1(a) Church Information Please give details for each church What percentage of the congregation lives outside the parish? 20% Describe the mix of the congregation in terms of age, employment, cultural, ethnicity, age and gender. 2(a) How would you describe the churchmanship tradition of the church and give details of robes and vestments worn by officiants? Few regular attendees between the ages of yrs 50+ are the majority in age range some retired having worked in a range of employment from services to management; both Science and the Arts. The majority are White / British - Female 80%/ Male 20% Middle of the road Anglican with some Anglo- Catholic elements. At communion services the celebrant usually wears an alb, chasuble and stole. Depending on the type of alb worn by the celebrant an amice may also be worn. The chalice assistant normally wears an amice and alb. In addition, there are 3 copes available. What is the regular average weekly giving of those 16 years & over and what proportion of the giving is gift aided? All Saints church has chasubles, stoles, and amices in green, red, purple, and white (two sets of each.) These colours also match with burse and veil sets for the chalice and paten. 385 is the average. Proportion Gift Aided is 77.5% (c) When did you last have a stewardship campaign? ; year 1 giving, year 2 talents, year 3 resources... a three year cycle. 3. How does your Church supplement its direct giving in order to meets its financial needs? 4(a) What amount of working expenses were paid to the clergy in the last financial year? HMRC gift aid claimed, also GASDS monies bimonthly. Coffee morning monies are restricted for our building insurance. Craft fairs, concerts, treasure hunt, auction, hire of the building, murder mystery, wine tasting. Full time priest 439 Curate 934 Were these met in full? Both met in full (c) Is there an annual discussion about level of expenses as part of the PCC s budgeting process? YES usually in January 4

5 5(a) What amount of Share has (a) been requested; and been paid from the parish in: last year? current year? 5 Share requested Share Paid next year? Will this year s be met? We will be losing % GA = 2250 with other possible losses in 2017; paying the whole of the share may be more challenging. 6(a) Is there any capital project in hand at the moment? Please give brief details with costs and state how they are to be met. 7. Please attach a copy of the last PCC accounts. 8(a) What is the general state of repair of: the Church - please list Please give details of major maintenance needed following the last quinquennial. We have additional responsibility for a churchyard 1 ½ miles away in the village of High Hoyland a different local council and a different episcopal area; working parties (maybe 6 persons) work up there on the fourth Sunday afternoon during April to Oct /Nov to maintain a semblance of order. Its ancient trees are a drain on our finances if fallen / cracked limbs are found. The paths will need re-laying in the near future. Visitors to the churchyard are often there, some looking for family connections, some tidying graves; many graves are untended now covered in carpet and bark chippings; there is a footpath to its north west side. We are looking towards inspection of the spire and the roof with Stage 1 being the hire of a MEWP (Mobile Elevated working Platform) during July 2017 Stage costs to be funded from Garfield Weston Foundation monies / Yorkshire Historic Churches trust and Allchurches Trust Ltd., supplemented with our fundraising. Stage 2 - Dependent upon the findings and the worst possible scenario costs could be in excess of 150K. Applications to Heritage Lottery Fund, National Churches Trust and our fundraising activities - amongst which is a talents initiative ++ will then be our means of covering the costs. Published in March 2017 Internally the space is much improved, more flexible and admired by our architect and visitors. The vestry is to insulate and storage space to improve some monies from local grants are earmarked for this. The basement boiler room is to improve with a possible sump linked to the nearby sewer to drain water from the outdoor well which floods into the room during heavy rain. Replacement of household plastic guttering to the South Chancel with powder coated aluminium guttering and fall pipes of greater width. The state of the roof and its crumbling tiles are causing concern; our spire is at the top of the list is the wooden structure safe do we need to replace or just repaint? Do we re-cover the taller parts of the spire; with what materials do we replace the flapping banding around its base? A check is needed of the bell chamber (housed in the spire) and the flooring; the bell needs a rope replacement in order that it can be rung for worship. Ultimately all household width plastic guttering should be replaced with powder coated aluminium of greater width and likewise the south facing iron guttering and fall pipes to eradicate the need for future painting.

9 VIII. Additional Information Please add here, or on another sheet, anything else which you would like the Patron and the Bishop to know about the conditions, needs and traditions of the parish. Needs of the Parish: A priest who is comfortable being visibly active within the community in addition to a Diocesan role. Support in outreach by other bodies would be welcomed eg. The Church Army to foster a relationship with the youths who are for example skateboarders - we have a skateboarding park at the lower end of the village. What is currently happening: Opportunities for engagement with the wider community are important eg. Christmas Live visits 3 venues in the village as adults and children retell the Christmas story; Made in Clayton West is a relatively new community group which the church supports. Full involvement in village events include opening church for refreshments during Harvest Festival time and Carols round the tree. What is good about our church: Our church has a strong choir and musical tradition which enhance our services; we enjoy an eclectic choice of hymnody and support new worship formats as and when introduced. The building is relatively small but Sunday services and children s group activities are able to run concurrently Our laity are committed and actively engaged in working to develop the church, both people and the building through four sub-groups. All Saints is regarded as being friendly and welcoming to all. The appointee can be confident that s/he will have active and prayerful support from the PCC and congregation as they take up their new role. IX. The New Priest At the present time, the two parishes of Scissett and Clayton West with High Hoyland would seem to be disparate in terms of the size of the congregation, the number of laity working for each church and the innovative ways in which we reach out to our respective communities. Nevertheless both parishes wish to engage with a new incumbent with the following skills and qualities and who has energy and empathy 9

10 to work in our communities to help us grow. WORSHIP: A visionary someone who can look at existing practices and see opportunities for improvement Maintain a strong music tradition within all worship scenarios and connect with both contemporary and traditional styles of worship Has the ability to be a spiritual guide to people of all ages COMMUNICATOR: Able to support the teaching of children and young families in a way that benefits current congregation members and encourages other families in the village to attend A person who has a desire to serve others and make a difference to other people s lives LEADER: A person who : is willing to delegate whilst providing support is ready to be involved and support sub-groups within the church and address the challenges of developing and growing a church community within the 21st century has a flexible approach whilst appreciating the rules and regulations of the Church of England, yet can also argue for flexibility when appropriate has a positive outlook and a sense of humour, possessing a keen sense of empathy has energy in abundance for this challenging role OUTREACH: Someone who: is friendly and communicative to all giving feedback and encouragement for the contribution made by the laity whose involvement ensures that the parishes remains viable and alive will work with a pastoral team and empower them to represent the church within the parish as well as maintaining a personal presence within the villages recognises the value of the church building being used for community activities and is prepared to consider further development of the building will continue to work with the schools in the two villages is mindful that the population within the two villages of the joint benefice are growing will continue strong Ecumenical relationships Members of the PCCs of the Joint Benefice would like to thank all who take the time to consider this post. Agreed by the PCC of 10
