2 2 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com There is o truth to the rumor goig aroud that the Masoic Times will oly be available i digital format ext year! What IS happeig is a ivestigatio ito producig a ew website, supported by a kowledgeable idividual or group who will help us keep it moder ad curret. New computer applicatios are available which make uploadig iformatio easy ad much less time-cosumig tha has bee the case i the past. We have bee asked to provide a electroic versio that the people who live off their tablets, smart phoes or laptops ca access at their leisure. Persoally, I ca t stad the thought of readig aythig o oe of those gadgets, let aloe doig it. I read messages, but if they cotai legthy body text or attachmets, I prit them out. Ad, I have a smart phoe ad sed ad receive text messages o almost a daily basis. Those are usually short ad easy to maage, which is ot always the case with s or articles. Last issue, I icluded a survey ad, as I write this colum, we have received quite a few resposes. I m icludig the survey agai (Page 8), i case you missed it, did t get a chace to sed it i, or ow wish you had doe so. Feel free to express yourself. My thoughts o surveys, i geeral, are ot positive. So may of them seem to be aimed at tellig you the right aswer so you wo t hurt the feeligs/ image/ratig of whomever is requestig your opiio. Whatever you do for me, if I m happy with your service, I ll come back ad eve recommed you; if I m ot, I wo t be waitig for a survey to tell you so...you ll hear it proto! I m sure may of you feel that way about this survey. I wat to assure you that the commets we have received, ad those we hope to still receive, will be coscietiously reviewed. The data will be compiled ad YOU will be part of the decisio o the future of the ewspaper. Will it cotiue? Will it become a electroic documet? How much are you willig to pay? Is this the ed? Please let us kow how you feel. As a aside, part of the ew website pla will be a tie-i with the Regioal Caledar. R W Joh Gallat set this up several years ago ad I tied ito it somewhat. There is much room for improvemet there, as well as the fact that, if you wat to pla a evet, you will have a cetral source to check for a possible coflict with aother affair. With Gratitude The Masoic Year has eded ad with it have come Electios (ad some Istallatios) of a ew class of Officers. I am very grateful to those s who wrote colums for the past year, or saw to it that iformatio o their Lodge evets was submitted to us. I am sad for those Orgaizatios who subscribe for which othig was provided, at least o a regular basis. It is a chore! I make o boes about that fact. Eve for me, who is resposible for the etire issue, there are days whe I am clueless as to what to say. Fortuately, most times the light bulb has come o, the figers have pushed the right keys o the keyboard ad a article has come flowig out. We hope the ew s will make their colum for the Masoic Times a high priority item! Not the least importat metio for me here is my thaks to the Staff. This has bee a tryig year, with several situatios occurrig beyod our cotrol. Special thaks to Barbara Goodrich ad Garry Craker, who have adjusted their schedules to accommodate our eeds. The staff has weathered the storm ad rise to the occasios as eeded. Now, we deserve ad are ready for our Summer respite. 4 Our past DDGM, R\W\ Jed Bradow, told me that the time as District Deputy would fly by i o time. Well he was correct. It does ot seem that a year has flow by. There has bee a lot of water uder the bridge, or a lot of water i the basemet of Milo Lodge o May 18th. The basemet eded up with te feet of water ad mud. Everythig was destroyed, from the hardwood floorig, three electrical services ad two furaces. With the help of may of the Lodges i the District (ad Grad Lodge with a low-iterest loa), they are ready for the 100- year Re-dedicatio of the Lodge Buildig o Jue 21st. Although the flood was devastatig, I believe Milo Lodge ad the Otario/Seeca/Yates District are much stroger as a result of all the cooperatio to get Milo back i busiess. R\W\ Thomas Abraham, Grad Director of Ceremoies, has doe a stellar job with educatio i our District this year. He made sure every Brother was provided the Masoic Developmet Course for each Degree. All of the DDGM Official Visits were well received ad oe were rescheduled due to iclemet weather. 14 Garoga-Sicerity Lodge No st & 3rd Tuesdays W Stephe Durso, Jr. R W Clayto Ruggles claymar4250@fltg.et 67 Otario Street, Phelps By R\W\ Clayto Ruggles Cogratulatios to all the ewly Elected ad Appoited Lodge Officers for the comig year. We look forward to a active year with scheduled evets such as diers, game ights ad Degree work. We will keep you iformed as to whe these Our Aual O/S/Y Survivig Spouses Lucheo was held i April at the Clifto Sprigs Coutry Club with approximately forty-two i attedace. Our guest speaker was Brother Mark Radloff of Farmerville- Uio Lodge. His topic was The Trials ad Tribulatios of Startig a Wiery i New York State. Brother Radloff just happes to be i the process of startig up a wiery i Iterlake. Mark did a great job, ad everyoe had a very ice time. Durig my Official Visits, oe of the questios I posed was whether the miimum age of 21 should be lowered to 18 i order to become a Maso. The majority of the Lodges did ot wat the age lowered whe polled. At first I also thought the age should ot be lowered, but after hearig all the pros ad cos ad also tryig to figure out why we lose so may ewly Raised Brothers, I chaged my mid. My ew belief is that it does t matter what age you are. Each ew Cadidate must be iformed of the obligatios that must be fulfilled ad the asked if they will commit to those obligatios, o matter what the age. Summer Readig Suggestios O a suy Saturday afteroo the ed of February, six Brothers came together to discuss Steve Bullock s itricately researched historic book Revolutioary Brotherhood. It was a ejoyable experiece for those who participated. At the Official Visits i the Fall, i the Masoic Times, ad o the Moroe Masoic District Facebook page, I had bee ecouragig all Brothers of our District to read this book as Dr. Bullock would be speakig at our College of Freemasory. Now as we get ready to go dark ad take some time off for the Summer, I d like to propose two books for us to read as a District. Rather tha beig historical, oe of these books is philosophical ad the other is sociological. Both of these works are beautifully writte ad quite egagig. They are also relatively shorter works. The first oe is Walter Wilmshurst s classic The Meaig of Masory. This book was origially published i 1922 by the British author. While the book is broke ito oly six brief chapters, it seems to me to be six separate papers or articles Wilmshurst may have writte ad delivered as speeches. As the title of the book implies, Wilmshurst explores the deeper symbolism of our ritual ad offers may isights ito its sigificace. If you have recetly etered the quarries you will fid this book eye-opeig. But, eve if you have bee workig i the 103 N. Washigto Street, East Rochester (585) Over 100 YEARS OF SERVICE quarries of Masory for may years, you will fid uggets of iterpretatio you have ever cosidered before, ad you will be rewarded. The secod book I propose is Robert Davis s Uderstadig Mahood i America: Freemasory s Edurig Path to the Mature Masculie. You will recall that a few years back Mr. Davis spoke at our College of Freemasory i Batavia. I purchased my copy of the book after readig Ill\ Thomas Jackso s review of it i the Scottish Rite s Norther Light magazie. My iitial glace at it left me thikig it was rather dry; however, after recetly re-lookig at it I realize my iitial assessmet was wrog. This is a book especially for Brothers i the crowd. He s talkig to you guys. Not that those of us above the age of 45 ca t get somethig out of this, too. Believe me, there s some good perspective here eve for those of us who have made the tur ad are o the back ie of life. Mr. Davis offers some fatherly wisdom to those of us who care to cosider what it meas to be a ma i today s culture. It s tough. It s ucertai. It s a challege. Ad our curret politically correct eviromet offers up more roadblocks to male peace-of-mid ad cotetmet tha I-490 i the Summer. Mr. Davis ultimately makes the case that a me s orgaizatio like Freemasory is ot oly good for me, but exactly what me eed i challegig times like these. Read it, before it s too late. As we did this past year, I will schedule a time durig the Witer moths whe we ca come together to discuss either oe (or both) of these compellig books. I do hope you will cosider them for your Summer readig. They ca be easily picked up through Amazo or Bares ad Noble. Fially, I hope you ad your loved oes all have a safe ad happy Summer. May the Supreme Architect of the Uiverse watch over you ad provide you with lazy, hazy sushie-filled days of blues ad grees, ad soft shadow, moolit ights of rest ad repose. R W Roy Moses roymoses46@gmail.com Assistat Grad Lecturers Moroe District V W Joe A. Lewis joelewis4@gmail.com By V\W\ Joe Lewis, AGL Welcome Hiram Your Jourey Begis Greetigs to all ewly Raised Masos for this Masoic Year! We welcome you ad commed you o your choice to joi the world s oldest ad greatest Fraterity. Cogratulatios for your hard work ad dedicatio o achievig the rak of Maso. Everythig that has bee taught to you thus far has bee taught i a symbolic, allegoric ad spiritually comprehesive structure. As you recall, the Three Degrees of Masory take place i Kig Solomo s Temple. The Etered Appretice Degree takes place o the groud floor, the Fellowcraft Degree takes place i the Middle Chamber, ad the Maso Degree takes place o the porch of Kig Solomo s Temple, which is at the etrace to the Holy of Holy s. These Architectural sites of the structure of Kig Solomo s Temple have deep philosophical importace to the Maso. Foud i the Great Light i Masory, i the book of 1st Corithias 3:16 states: Kow ye ot that ye are the temple of God, ad that the Spirit of God dwelleth i you. You are the Temple, Brothers, ad the three differet aspects of the Temple are referrig to three differet aspects of you or better yet, of Makid himself. The Three Degrees describe a jourey for the idividual Maso who participates i them. It is a jourey that takes place i oe s cosciece ad cosciousess. I other words, it is a jourey of self. O this woderful jourey of self, you will have may truths revealed to you ad oe must always submit to the truth. The Great Light says i Joh 8:32: The you will kow the truth ad the truth shall set you free. A Maso watig to take this jourey must do it o his ow, i his ow way ad accordig to his ow religious experieces. Freemasory cofers the Degree upo you, but Freemasory caot cofer elevated levels of cosciousess. This glorious ad beautiful task will be yours ad yours aloe. Every Workig Tool i the Three Degrees, as explaied, is capable of guidig you towards achievig True Self Kowledge. The Workig Tools of the Speculative Maso have differet philosophical applicatios, but they all have oe uiversal cocept i commo ad that is they are all istrumets of AC- TION. So you must take actio, you must work i order to take advatage of the symbolic, allegoric, spiritual comprehesive structure, which will be ecessary for your jourey. I closig, I also remid you ot to forget utilizig the Greatest Light i Masory, which is the Holy Bible. For i this Book is foud oe of the clearest sequece or processes of actio ecessary to achievig success i all thigs. I the Book of Matthew 7:7 it states: Ask, ad it shall be give you; seek, ad ye shall fid; kock, ad it shall be opeed uto you. Good Luck to all of you o your quest for Masoic Light ad I wish you all the Greatest Masoic Success! Moroe District Membership Developmet Kleaig by Kelly Commercial & Residetial By Bruce Katz, District Chairma Membership Developmet: Keepig Masos It s oe thig to make Masos it s aother thig to keep them! This was the key fidig from the revitalized Grad Lodge Membership Developmet Committee as reported i the Grad Lodge Aual Report. A importat ad sad observatio is that [t]he uofficial summary for the curret year reveals that we Raised approximately 1,040 Masos ad agai Uaffiliated 1,187 Members for No-Paymet of Dues. Also from the Grad Lodge Report: The Membership Developmet Committee has actively ivestigated ad idetified the best membership developmet practices curretly utilized i successful Masoic Districts as well as our sister Grad Lodge jurisdictios. The Committee will shortly complete ad lauch a ew statewide iitiative which will chage the culture of educatio withi our Lodges. The ew program will iclude traiig the Lodge Success Coaches (the Metor), the Cadidate Selectio Process ad the full cycle of advacemet from Prospect to Cadidate to Life- Log cotributig member. The implemetatio of this ew ad excitig iitiative will iclude a District Metorig Chair, i cojuctio with traied Success Coaches (Metors) from each Lodge will provide idividual ad persoal guidace, thus makig the Cadidate a better Maso ad permaet asset to Freemasory ad to the Commuity. Oe of the key opportuities for retaiig ew Brothers is helpig guide their educatio. The Committee o Educatioal ad Leadership Services reported (page 23) that this past year 157 Brothers participated i the Masoic Developmet Course (MDC). This is a excellet opportuity for Brothers both ew ad experieced to lear more about our Craft. At the Lodge level, the LSOME (Lodge System of Masoic Educatio) Program is available as a DVD ad associated booklet, to be used before the 1st Degree ad after the subsequet Degrees. Although statistics are ot maitaied o the program, it is believed that LSOME is ot adequately beig utilized by Lodges. There will be additioal commuicatios o these topics, but it is ot too early to begi cosideratio of your Lodge s plas, icludig the idetificatio of potetial Lodge Metors ad how to better implemet the LSOME ad MDC Programs i your Lodge. As the Masoic Year draws to a close, I am remided of the portio of Psalm 133 that states Behold, how good ad pleasat it is for Brethre to dwell together i uity I thak several groups of Brothers who helped to make the year a success: The Elected ad Appoited Officers of ERAC for their uflaggig ethusiasm for the work of Masory, ad their support throughout the year. Dudley, jdudley1@rochester.rr.com 17 Church Street, Pittsford My Exit Iterview Thak you, Brothers, for allowig me to serve as your Worshipful throughout the past year. I was Raised slightly over 5 years ago. Like may of you, whe I came ito this edeavor, I had o pre-coceived otios about my Brothers or the Craft a Lambski, if you will. Like may Lodges i this District ad throughout the State, Northfield Lodge has see a declie i membership ad attedace at its Regular Commuicatios. We are ot sure why, but this cotiues to be the ageold questio. Why? Some thigs have t chaged durig my teure at the Lodge; ot oly as the, but also as a Brother. To those of you who are uclear about the Lodge, its directio ad what has occurred here over the past year, COME ad atted a Regular Commuicatio ad fid out. Your attedace would be greatly appreciated. WHY? Because it seems as though it s who have all, at oe time or aother, whispered wise cousel i my ear, thus reducig the umber of times I have erred. I thak you for your wisdom ad patiece. To the Grad Lodge ad Staff Officers who have stood ready to assist us whe called. No oe kows how much work is doe behid the scees by these dedicated Brothers who are ofte faced with a thakless task. Fially, the body of the Lodge - the sideliers, if you will. Previously, I have ever agreed with our use of the term sideliers, util reflectig upo it durig the preparatio of this article. I the realized that, as i football, the sideliers are ot idly stadig by, but rather stadig atthe-ready, prepared to get i the game whe eeded. Brothers, I thak you for beig there to support your Lodge ad Fraterity wheever called upo. I am excited by the future of ERAC Lodge. As I have stated (ad auseum, it sometimes seems), our Lodge is blessed by a abudace of youth, wisdom, talet ad eergy. It is my belief that these resources, uder wise stewardship, will help to carry us well ito the future. Util we meet agai. the same Brothers meetig-aftermeetig, evet-after-evet hoistig the Lodge s weight o their shoulders to esure its success. To those Brothers, you are the life support of this Lodge. Cotiuig to support ad sustai us over the last year, I ca t thak you eough for your true friedship ad love. Withi the past year, there were a lot of expectatios ad pressure placed o our Lodge. With your help, the Lodge has cotiued to flourish. I ca see you startig to buckle as our time i the treches ad quarries seems edless. Our time together, though, has established ad forged lifelog friedships. To you, I exted my deepest thak you ad I will ever take them for grated. To those local Brothers able to atted ad have t WHY??? You could joi us i the recetly paited diig room, break bread at oe of the feasts prepared by Brothers for Brothers, take i a program preseted by Brothers who put forth so much effort to make sure that we as Brothers were receivig further Masoic Light Not the same old busiess as usual meetigs. WHY?? As preseters from our Lodge ad the other preseters throughout the District, you Brothers get it. A deeper look ito this Fraterity o may differet levels, but also, a respect for the Craft. Respect for the Craft. Thak You. Brothers, preset ad future, please remember why we have joied this sacred Fraterity. The reaso we each decided to joi is differet ad persoal; as it should be. Whe you look i the mirror each day, are you still true to the Craft ad, more importatly, yourself? Respect ot oly the Craft, your Brothers ad yourself. I could go o BUT WHY? It would be a shame to lose great Brothers, like my pillars of support, the oes i the treches ad quarries over the past year because the ifluece ad arrogace of self-servig Brothers cotiues to permeate our Masoic home. Our Electio of Officers was last moth ad we are preparig for the Istallatio of all Elected ad Appoited Officers. Brother Alle Heidrick atteded Grad Lodge, as our Represetative, ad reported at the Electio meetig. We oly had oe meetig i May as the fourth Moday is ow the official celebratio of Memorial Day, except i Waterloo. If you do t kow about Waterloo, ask. Oe of the other evets i May we hope some of our Brothers took advatage of was the Masoic Developmet Course, facilitated by R\W\Steve Micheer with the sectio o the 3rd Degree coducted by R\W\ Joh Zabel. This Course is a good way of learig more about the meaig of each of the three Degrees ad to lear how other Brothers perceive the Degrees ad their symbols ad teachigs. Jue 8th (our last meetig util September), is Sport Shirt Night so come to Lodge wearig your most outrageous sport shirt. We presume there will be a cotest for the best, most outrageous shirt. We will coclude the eveig with Strawberry Shortcake with all the works. Stay tued for more iformatio about this eveig as it approaches Through the Summer moths we will see Masoic social fuctios. Your ew Lodge Officers ad the Fellowcraft Club will be plaig a picic which may iclude a Clambake ad other goodies. More iformatio to come. We also ask that you welcome our ewest Masos, Brothers Carey Hollis ad Dea Sisso. They received the Maso Degree o April 27th. The Lodge did a good job o the Degree with the help of W\ Richard Spellma from Seeca Lodge takig the part that W\ Tom Ward was scheduled to do. Brother Ward was home sick i bed that eveig so Brother Dick filled i ad did a excellet job. We thak him for his assistace. The Lodge Brothers who filled the other parts did good work that was appreciated by all. O a recet Suday morig while at a church service, the miister titled his sermo with the word metathesiophobia. If you have ever heard or see this word, Google it. The way it was used i the sermo could also apply to our beloved Fraterity. We, or more exactly, may Masos are afraid of chage as it applies to the Fraterity. Well, chage happes sometimes for the best ad sometimes ot. We all must embrace chage that we perceive will improve our Fraterity ad Lodges or we will evetually perish. Masoic history has show that chage for the sake of the Fraterity is good. The perceptio of the Fraterity prior to the Morga Affair caused much of the uproar whe Morga was abducted. However, may years later, the perceptio of the Fraterity chaged ad it started to grow agai. What chaged? It was t the Ritual as that did ot chage. It was the actios of the Brethre i the commuity ad the perceptio of o-masos of the Brethre who chaged. The chage was good. The etire Fraterity especially Lodges eeds to look at themselves ad determie what we have that me i society may wat or eed ad the determie how best to show our commuity those characteristics. This may the ecourage me to seek us out ad petitio for membership. Whe this happes, we must do all we ca to see that our Brethre, from the Petitioer to the logest-servig member, kow what our teachigs are ad how they ca be applied to their life. Do we do that ow? Yes, to some extet, but we must do a better job. How, you ask? Oe way is to improve our metorig of ew Brothers ad the discussio of Masoic teachig with all Brothers; i.e., good Masoic Programs durig Lodge meetigs. Where are the resources? Ask the Grad Lodge Officers, the s ad Wardes Associatio or members of your Lodge who appear kowledgeable. The resources are there, they just eed to be tapped. Maybe there are areas of Lodge admiistratio ad fuctioig that should chage as society has chaged. There are areas that we may ot wat to chage, like the Ritual. We are oe of the very few orgaizatios left that actively cofers Degrees ad performs Ritual fuctios. We each should look at our Lodge ad our ow feel- Cotiued o Page 8

MMRL Researches Atrial Fibrillatio Atrial fibrillatio (AF) is the most commo arrhythmia ecoutered by physicias. It is reachig epidemic proportios i the Uited States, with over 2.7 millio Americas affected icludig early oe i 10 idividuals 80 years of age ad older. As the populatio ages, projectios idicate that its prevalece will icrease to 15 millio by Whe the heart is i atrial fibrillatio, stagatio of blood i the atria ca cause blood clots that ca travel to the brai ad cause a ischemic stroke. Over 25% of strokes i the Uited States are attributable to atrial fibrillatio. For this reaso, it is importat for patiets with AF to use blood thiers such as warfari or other ewer aticoagulats. Scietists at the Istitute are workig with a biotechology compay to develop a ovel therapy for AF based o atrial-selective ihibitio of sodium chael curret, a approach pioeered by Masoic Medical Research Laboratory scietists. It has show very effective i experimetal models, but ulike other drugs used to treat AF, it has very low toxicity. Phase 2 Cliical trials have bee coducted to assess the effectiveess of the combiatio of raolazie (Raexa) ad droedaroe (Multaq) for the safe ad effective maagemet of AF. Express your opiio usig Survey form below ad sedig it i! The Phase 2 cliical trial was double blid, meaig that either the patiet or the medical practitioer kew who was takig the placebo ad who was takig the medicatio. Results of the cliical trial showed that those takig the drug combiatio had far fewer episodes of atrial fibrillatio tha those takig the placebo or either drug aloe. Phase 3 cliical trials are expected to begi later this year. Atrial Fibrillatio i the Settig of Heart Failure We are also coductig studies to assess the effectiveess of certai drugs ad combiatios of drugs o the iductio of atrial fibrillatio i the settig of heart failure. Heart failure affects early 5 millio people i the Uited States. Each year close to 500,000 ew cases are diagosed. It is the leadig cause of hospitalizatio i people over 65 ad is ofte associated with atrial fibrillatio, which worses the progosis of heart failure. Our ogoig studies have idetified a temporal widow of vulerability for the developmet of atrial fibrillatio durig the progressio of heart failure. We have also show that i our experimetal models, raolazie (Raexa) is very potet i prevetig the iductio of AF i the settig of heart failure. I view of its efficacy ad safety, it may be a welcome substitute to curretly used drugs. Cardiac Research Istitute/MMRL is also workig to idetify gee defects that ca predispose youg idividuals to AF. Sudde Ifat Death Sydrome SIDS has bee attributed to umerous, ofte poorly defied mechaisms implicatig cardiovascular, respiratory ad ifectious diseases. The first direct evidece likig SIDS to a cogeital heart defect the Log QT Sydrome was published i The New Eglad Joural of Medicie based o work doe by the Masoic Medical Research Laboratory team i collaboratio with cliical colleagues i Italy several years ago. A mutatio i the gee kow as SCN5A was show to produce a major icrease i late sodium curret, providig the first uequivocal demostratio that a lifethreateig evet i ifacy with all the features of SIDS may be due to a sporadic mutatio causig LQTS. Support for a lik betwee SIDS ad cardiac arrhythmias has grow progressively ad it is ow believed that percet of SIDS cases are due to disorders of heart rhythm. MMRL is oe of the top geetic screeig ceters i the world dedicated to helpig families with iherited life-threateig cardiac arrhythmias. Brugada Sydrome Masoic Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL) scietists also take pride i havig discovered the majority of gees resposible for aother form of iherited sudde cardiac death kow as the Brugada Sydrome. This disorder geerally afflicts idividuals as they reach the third ad fourth decade of their otherwise-healthy lives. Some, i fact, are athletes who have edured streuous traiig without ay medical problems, util oe day they die suddely i their sleep without warig. The sydrome has cofouded doctors for decades ad left may families devastated. Our scietists demostrated that faulty gees that ecode sodium, calcium ad potassium chaels i the heart cotribute to the developmet of this sydrome. Usig experimetal models of the disease, we were able to idetify a class of drugs that ca be used i cojuctio with implatable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) to protect patiets from the arrhythmias that lead to sudde cardiac arrest. Thaks to these advaces, idividuals with this disease ca be idetified geetically as well as cliically, ad appropriate therapy ca be admiistered before a tragic outcome occurs. The oly book dealig exclusively with Brugada Sydrome emaated from a Cosesus Coferece hosted by MMRL.

11 Jue 2015 Website: What s New i Erie 13-Year-Old Raises Over $20,000 Thirtee-year-old Mikayla may have bee bor without her right had, but she was bor with a full heart. From birth, Mikayla was a patiet at Shriers Hospitals for Childre -Erie (SHC-Erie). The staff at SHC-Erie worked with her to be fitted with prosthetics ad how to utilize those prosthetic devices. However, Mikayla says the most importat thig she received from the SHC-Erie was the belief that she was ormal ad could accomplish aythig to which she put her mid. Mikayla did put her mid to somethig she wated to give back to the orgaizatio that gave so much to her. Mikayla s idea was to host a beefit dier ad a live auctio, titled Love a Child! Her visio for the evet was to raise moey so they (SHC-Erie) have the fuds available to help other childre like myself ad those who eed so much more from them (SHC-Erie). Mikayla set a lofty goal for Love a Child! her first fudraisig evet, $20,000! Kimberly Goldize, Mikayla s mother said, she set that goal early o ad o oe believed she could get there. Mikayla did ot just take a passive leadership role with Love a Child!; she was o the frot lies. She was out drummig up sposorships, takig doatios ad sellig tickets. Eve o the ight of the evet, from cookig diers to servig the food, she was ivolved. The ight of the evet featured a 50/50 ad a plethora of live auctio items. With over 300 tickets sold, there was ot a empty seat to be foud. By the ed of the eveig, as the total was materializig, it was clear Mikayla ot oly reached her goal, but surpassed it. I a little over two moths of plaig ad work she had raised $20,230 for SHC-Erie! Eve with her drive ad passio, Mikayla remais humble. Mikayla says she ad her family draw ispiratio from a particular lie of scripture, For uto whomsoever much is give, of him shall be much required: ad to whom me have committed much, of him they will ask the more. (Luke 12:48) The oe mistake Shriers Hospitals for Childre -Erie made with Mikayla, said Mikayla s mother, was tellig her she could do aythig she wated. She has t stopped sice. Occupatioal Therapy Research Wis Acclaim A thesis project prepared by a group of s of Occupatioal Therapy (OT) Studets, at Gao Uiversity wo secod place at the Uiversity s Celebrate Gao evet. At the evet a research pael judges competig graduate thesis projects from across the Uiversity. The studets hypothesized that stadardized testig related to visual motor skills would improve if a Saet Visio Itegrator (SVI) was used i cojuctio with traditioal OT visual motor strategies rather tha traditioal OT treatmet aloe. The SVI is a computerized visual motor perceptual program. The studets worked diligetly, ad with support from Julia Hawkis, OTD, Kevi Cooey, PT, Mauree Hubert, BSN, RN, ad Kerry Armet, MD, they were able to gai approval from both the Gao Uiversity ad UPMC Istitutioal Review Board committees to coduct their research. At the coclusio of the project the data suggests that the SVI does aide i improved visual motors skills whe used i combiatio with traditioal OT visual motor techiques. The project was vital because evidece-based research surroudig the SVI is sparse. With approximately 450 facilities aroud the coutry utilizig the SVI it will be importat to determie if the SVI is a useful tool for accomplishig patiet goals. The OT team is i the plaig stages of havig their results published to help expad the kowledge base surroudig the SVI. 14 14 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com I ecoomics there is the broke widow fallacy. I Masory there is the limited Light fallacy. The followig ofte is the story: A ewly Raised Brother is advised that for some period of time, 3 years, 5 years, or more, he should just focus o the Maso Lodge. There is so Joh Lemke, 32, DSA much to lear i the Commader-i-Chief Blue Lodge that S C O T T I S H R I T E N E W S Chapter Rose Croix Cosistory Lodge of Perfectio Coucil of Prices of Jerusalem you should give yourself plety of time before movig o to Cocordat Masoic Bodies. It seems that other Masoic Fraterities may be looked at as competitio by some. It is sometimes thought that a Brother oly has X amout of time ad that if he speds his time at the Scottish Rite, for example, the he does t have it to sped at the Maso Lodge. Well, I ca uderstad the cocer. There is a certai logic to it. I the broke widow fallacy the story goes that if a widow is broke ad eeds to be fixed the it actually creates work ad therefore wealth because someoe will be employed to fix the glass. The moey eared i fixig the glass will the be spet, ad o ad o creatig more wealth. Of course, although o the surface this may appear logical, it is ot true. It is a fallacy. What is t take ito accout is that if the moey was t spet o fixig the widow it would have bee spet o somethig else. So the idea that the destructio of thigs creates wealth, is a fallacy. Likewise, the idea that limitig Light somehow creates more Light, is a fallacy. Remember those days ot log ago, sittig i the classroom waitig for the fial bell of the school year. Leaig towards the door, we would soo be released from our captivity. Our backpack (or whatever we were carryig at the time) was stuffed with papers ad art projects we had doe throughout the school year. Perhaps a Summer readig list, soo to be forgotte. You re really ot gaiig more Light by limitig your ivestigatio of further Masoic Light. Cocer has bee expressed that ew Brothers eter a Lodge, atted a few meetigs, lose iterest ad do t come back. They may stay i Masory or ot. I would suggest that it is possible that they did t fid what they wated i their Lodge. Their certaity was more to lear i their Lodge, but they did t lear it. Now what if what they wated was i the Scottish Rite? What if the Scottish Rite experiece actually would iterest them ad would keep them i Masory ad i their Lodge. That would mea that ot takig the Scottish Rite path took away the experiece that would have helped this Brother become a better ma ad reach his higher mahood. Not takig the Scottish Rite is really limitig a Brother s Light ad maybe settig him o a path he will fid ufulfillig ad/or borig. Limited Light, less Light, is hard pressed to result i more Light. I probably have t expressed this the best way possible. We thak all the Compaios who atteded that meetig ad participated i the Degree work, some at the last miute. We hope the Cadidates appreciated the Degree work ad the lessos therei cotaied. O April 30th we held a special eveig to rehearse the Opeig ad Closig Ceremoy for a Chapter. The Officers ad Members have decided we eed to work o improvig our work i order to help build the stregth of the Chapter. All our Compaios ca assist i this edeavor by several meas. First, atted our Covocatios; secod, lettig the High Priest ad Officers kow their opiio of the eveig; ad third, makig ay suggestios o programs, improvemets, etc., that they feel are eeded. All suggestios will be cosidered ad addressed. We wat to build a really strog ad vibrat Chapter as we feel that is what Masos i the area deserve ad a Chapter that ca fill their eeds for further Masoic Light. The District meetig with the Grad Chapter Regioal Officer, origially scheduled for Saturday, May 9th, had to be chaged due to a small lack of commuicatio betwee him ad the DDGHP. Hopefully, the meetig was rescheduled ad all Compaios were iformed of the ew date ad place. This is always a good time to discuss the Grad Chapter, District ad OES DDGM Cotiued from Page 13 goal is to give a ew leash o life to rescue dogs ad military heroes, empowerig warriors to retur to civilia life with digity ad idepedece. We will be lookig for Compaios who will be willig to take the small parts while we work with the Compaios who have committed to the larger parts i these two Degrees. Our Cadidates deserve the best possible Degree work that we ca do. Yes, Degree work takes time ad effort, but it is rewardig to do good work as the participats, Cadidates ad observers all ca lear some of the lessos these Degrees were desiged to covey. Musigs Let me get the Compaios thikig about the Mark Maso Degree. The Degree uses a time measuremet system foud i the Bible that has the day divided ito twelve hours. The day starts at surise ad eds at suset, which meas that the hours of the day have differet legths as the seasos chage. Now, i the Middle East, where evets i the Bible take place, the chage i the hour due to seasos was ot great because Palestie is close to the tropics where the legth of the day does ot chage much due to chage of the sea- Grad Sessios October 14th 17th Although Sessios are i October, hotel rooms are blocked ad must be released durig the Summer. Therefore, if you are plaig to atted ad eed a hotel room, submit your reservatio to the DGL by JUNE 15th. Reservatio forms are available from your Chapter or me. My recommedatio is to mark your choices as #1-Doubletree ad #2-Holiday I. It s importat that District reservatios be submitted i a group so whe assigmets are made durig the Summer, we re hadled as a group. Agai, I will make the reservatios as eeded. Projects i the Works Holiday Stockig Project R.W. Joy Woodley is headig up a Holiday Stockig Project sos. The eveig time, after suset, had o hour desigatios uless some meas other tha the su were used to measure time. Now cosider the Maso Degree where time is measured o a 24-hour basis, i.e., high-twelve ad low-twelve. This system of time measuremet requires some mechaical time measurig system whereas the 12-hour day is depedet oly o a sudial. Sice the Mark Maso Degree ad the Maso Degree are closely liked chroologically, why the differece i time measuremet? I leave it to the reader to thik about this ad come up with possible aswers. We would like the Compaios to formulate a aswer to this questio ad preset it i oe of our Fall meetigs. I the Opeig of a Lodge it is stated that the Seior Warde pays the Craft their wages, if ay, be due. How do you kow how he pays the wages ad what are the wages of a Maso? We kow what the wages for a Fellowcraft are as they are stated i the Fellowcraft Degree, or are they? Thik about all of this. If you have questios, come to a Chapter meetig ad brig up the questio for discussio. We ca have fu talkig ad sharig thoughts o these topics. This ca be oe of the delights of beig a Royal Arch Maso. Our first meetig i September will be o September 10th. The plas for that meetig are still i the works. As we get closer to the ed of Summer we will commuicate with the Compaios o our Fall schedule of programs ad Degrees. We will work o makig your attedace at our meetigs a pleasat ad learig experiece. We wish all Compaios a great Summer with its may activities, some of which may be Masoic i ature. for Deployed Military Persoel. It s a small stockig that s kitted, crocheted or sew for which we have patters for each. Whe completed, they will be shipped to a project coordiator for fillig with persoal items ad set overseas to the Troops. If you are iterested i makig some of these, cotact your Chapter or me for a patter. If you eed yar to make some, also let me kow; may of us have a stash we d love to share. Livigsto Masoic Library to Digitize Lodge Record Archives A Aoucemet from R:.W:. Bruce Reer, Presidet of the Livigsto Masoic Library Board of Trustees This year the Library is egaged i aother project to brig your Lodge s history to digital life. As may of you are aware, the Library maitais historical iformatio about Lodges i Lodge Folders. I m happy to aouce a project that will greatly ehace the way these folders are created, updated, accessed, ad preserved. These folders cotai documets datig primarily from the 20th cetury, provided by the Lodge, that cover a wide rage icludig iformatio about importat evets, meetig otices, iformatio o otable people, ad eve Lodge histories. They have up to ow bee kept i paper folders, ad stored the traditioal way i metal filig cabiets. The oly way to access your folder was to visit the Library, ofte durig your brief visit to Grad Lodge each year. With several hudred Lodges watig a look at their file, thigs ca get quite cogested. There are may other challeges with these folders. Eve for Lodges i the NYC area, there is limited access. May Lodges, therefore, lose iterest i the process, ad let valuable historical iformatio be lost. Over time, a Lodge Folder may be forgotte. I additio, may of the documets are fragile. A excellet example is ewspaper clippig that demostrates a public iterest i Lodge activity, but which is prited o very cheap paper. Paper folders are also hard to maitai with our limited staff, ad duplicatios occur frequetly. Because addig documets, especially remotely, requires some work, good itetios aside, may Lodges fail to get it doe. This leads to iformatio gaps sometime spaig may years. Fially, the oly way to search for somethig is to hadle the physical folder ad each documet by had. This requires a o site presece ad exposes the folder to additioal hadlig with all the icumbet preservatio issues. So just how may documets are we talkig about? We estimate the curret collectio cotais at least 300,000 documets. They are stored i 35 four-draw filig cabiets or 140 file drawers. There is a huge variety of documets ad eve some 3 dimesioal objects stored with our museum artifacts. Over the past several years the Library Board ad Staff have bee movig the Library ito the digital age. The collectio of Lodge Folders was a excellet target for early digitalizatio. After some discussio, the Board set aside fuds for the project, which amouted to about $35,000. The Library udertook the digitalizatio of fragile material that could t be subjected to high speed scaig, but outsourced the rest of the work. From our Board, RW Ed Chiai, our techology Chairma was key to gettig this project off the groud. At a high level, the process is fairly straight forward, although the actual scaig of 300,000 items is ot a trivial task. First, items were presorted, ad fragile items were separated out. The remaiig documets were the packed ito file boxes ad trasported to the outsourcer s image processig ceter by their staff. Oce there the remaiig documets are processed usig high-speed scaers. A importat valued added step to this process is that optical character scaig techology allows may of the documets to be idexed for o-lie retrieval. The origial documets were the retured to the Library. The remaiig steps iclude eablig access for Lodges ad Brothers. We expect this to be i beta test sometime this summer. The Board has recommeded ot retaiig the paper Lodge Folders. Lodges will be give the opportuity to reclaim their folders. Uclaimed folders will be stored or discarded at the discretio of the library. The electroic versio of the Lodge Folders takes up about 40.5G. It easily fits o a flash drive that fits i the palm of your had! Now the dream of covertig these files ito electroic format will be realized! Lodges should cotact the Library to retai cotets by JULY 1. Lodges may oly receive folders of the curret Lodge ad past Lodges that have merged with their lodge. How to file your request: Worshipful s or Secretaries, requests to lodgefolders@ymasoiclibrary. org with a list of lodge umbers for folders they wish retured Provide shippig address to receive cotets OR Arrage for i-perso pick-up at the Mahatta Brach by a authorized Lodge represetative or DDGM. NOTE: UNCLAIMED DOCUMENT FOLDERS MAY BE DISPOSED OF AT THE LIBRARY S DISCRETION. Throughout the summer util Labor Day i-perso pick-ups ca be made by appoitmet at the Mahatta Library. Alteratively, we will also arrage for weekly shipmets. DDGMs ca also make pick-ups for Lodges i their districts. After Labor Day, requests for cotets will be processed o a aual basis - delivered to Lodges at St. Joh s Weeked if they are still available. Ay questios, please cotact the Library s Mahatta brach at or through the Grad Lodge switchboard, (800)
