3 Dear Church Family, We spent this last week in Branson, Missouri it s our go to vacation spot. While there, we visited the Titanic museum. The people that built the Titanic put a lot in to the building of this great ship. At the cost of $7.5 million, it was set to be the greatest ship ever launched. Setting out on its maiden journey, it left Southampton en route to New York with 2,224 people on April 10, A Titanic crewman was so confident in the building of the great ship that he made the famous remark, Not even God could sink this ship! We know that five days into the journey, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank, taking with it the lives of more than 1,500 people. While I don t claim to know all the exact details of the ship and that fateful night (if you want to know more talk to Joshua Milford, a historian on the Titanic and member at Quail Creek), I have learned some valuable lessons from it. The Titanic, while cutting edge and with great care, was slow to see the dangers ahead. It was ill-prepared for an emergency, without even enough lifeboats for its passengers. The ship collided with the iceberg only 37 seconds after spotting it, which was not enough time to avoid it. Most of the lifeboats left the boat without being filled to capacity, and very few launched successfully. As a church, we have to watch for the icebergs that lay waiting to tear our church apart. Things like gossip, lack of vision, lack of volunteers, lack of funding, or lack of the Gospel and prayer. Icebergs come up on you quickly and often devastate churches from becoming what they are intended to be. There is no church too big, strong enough, or grounded enough to be unaffected by the icebergs we need to be a church(ship) that only God can keep afloat. Would you begin praying for how you can be a part of the church family that helps us as we trust God to keep us afloat? Would you commit to pray for our church and its influence in our City, our State, our Nation, and around the World? Pray that we would be humble, effective, and loving in everything we do.
