Why would someone want to escape from this place? What rights do all people deserve? When does the government have the right to restrict the freedom of people? What is the relationship between freedom and responsibility? What is the purpose of law in society? 1

Audio: Background on Alcatraz Island: Alcatraz Island is a small island in the San Francisco bay. The island was discovered by the Spanish (Juan de Ayala) in 1775 and covers less than 19 acres. The name comes from the Spanish word "Alcatraces", meaning "Pelicans". With the California gold rush, the island was home to a lighthouse that was built in After that, the US army wanted the island for protection of the San Francisco bay. Later on, from 1907 to 1934, Alcatraz was a location for a military prison until the US Department of Justice took it over in From 1934 to March of 1963, it was a federal prison, housing some of the most infamous criminals, such as Al Capone. The prison closed for good in 1963 and has since been abandoned. In 1969, a group of American Indians tried to claim the island, but were unsuccessful. Since then, Alcatraz became a landmark and part of the United States system of National Parks. 3 San Francisco, California-USA Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was the most famous prison in America. It was supposed to be escape-proof.but, on the night of July 11, 1962, three of its prisoners managed to escape and were never seen again.what happened to these three men?how did they escape from this maximum security island prison? Alcatraz prison is located on Alcratraz Island in the San Francisco Bay, two kilometers from San Francisco. The island, nicknamed The Rock, became a prison in 1933.Alcatraz was thought to be America s strongest prison because of its combination of high tech security and its location in the cold water and strong currents of the San Francisco Bay. The infamous prison held America s most dangerous and troublemaking prisoners.ruthless criminals, gangsters, bank robbers and escapees from other prisons were brought to Alcatraz to serve their prison time.four of these prisoners were bank robbing brothers John and Clarence Anglin, robber Frank Morris and Allen West, a violent car thief. The brothers John and Clarence Anglin were brought to Alcatraz after attempting to escape the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary several times.the Anglin brothers were dangerous criminals with a long history of violent crime. Frank Morris was well known in the American prison system as an escape artist.he was very smart, and he had tried to escape every prison he had been locked in.because of his bad reputation, worried prison officials decided to send Morris to escape-proof Alcatraz. Frank Morris 3

Allen West was at Alcatraz for his second time, and he knew a lot about the building. West noticed some weaknesses in the concrete prison walls while cleaning a corridor behind the cells one day.he thought that an escape through the corridor might be possible, and he talked to Morris and the Anglin brothers about what he had found. The escape plan started with the three men making chisels out of metal spoons stolen from the cafeteria.they found that the concrete in their cells could be slowly broken with their small chisels, and they dug holes through the back walls of their cells.their plan was to make a large enough hole in their cells walls so that they could break through to the corridor behind and climb to the top of the prison building. The Anglin brothers cells were next to each other, and Morris and West s cells were side by side as well.while one man dug a hole in his wall, the other would watch outside the cell to make sure guards couldn't see what they were doing.finally, Morris and the Anglin brothers each made a hole large enough to squeeze through into the corridor.west hadn t broken through his wall yet, and stayed in his cell. The three men opened up a secret workshop on the top of the prison building. There they made dummy heads from soap, toilet paper, and hair from the prison s barber shop.for six weeks, the three men worked on building the fake heads and a raft from over 50 rubber raincoats borrowed from other prisoners. Many prisoners knew what the men were doing, but they wanted to help the men escape and kept their work a secret. 4

Frank Morris dummy head One of the chiseled cell wall On the night of July 11, 1962, the weather was perfect and the four men decided that it was time to go.guards would go around at night and count the heads in bed, but the men put the fake heads in their beds to fool the guards. Allen West finally tried to break through his wall, but he couldn t get through. Morris and the Anglin brothers tried to help him break through the wall, but the concrete wouldn t budge and they had to leave him behind. Allen West Allen West s Cell B-140 The three men cut through a ventilation cover on the roof of the prison and climbed to the top of the building.they carefully avoided the prison guards watching from the lighthouse, used a rope to climb 15 meters down the side of the prison building, and ran to the edge of the island.there they inflated their raft and disappeared into the San Francisco Bay. The prison guards didn t know that the men were gone until they discovered the fake heads the next morning. By then, the men had been gone for about 12 hours.the prison, police and FBI immediately began a huge search for the men, but the three escapees were never found.five days after the escape, a postcard arrived at the San Francisco office of the FBI.The message read Haha, we made it. 5

Did Morris and the Anglin brothers really make it? Experts think that the escape would have been very difficult but possible.the water in the San Francisco Bay is very cold, and the currents are strong.was their raft strong enough to hold them in the rough waters of the bay?no one is sure, but experts have re-created the men s raft and found that building a raft out of Alcatraz rain coats is possible. While there were 14 escape attempts from Alcatraz, Morris and the Anglin brothers are the only prisoners to escape Alcatraz and not be caught or shot while trying to get away.over the years there were many rumors that the men had escaped to Mexico, and the FBI found Spanish language textbooks in their prison cells.when the Anglin brothers mother died, two unusual looking large people dressed in women s clothing were seen at her funeral.were these two women the Anglin brothers in disguise?we ll probably never know. Alcatraz Federal Prison closed one year after the escape in 1963 because of the high costs of operating an island prison.the Alcatraz Prison is now a popular tourist destination and part of the U.S. National Parks. Now people can buy tickets to go inside the prison, learn about its history, and feel what daily life was like for prisoners.a visit to Alcatraz also helps visitors to understand how difficult the challenge was that Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers faced in their famous escape attempt. 7 .Alcatraz Escape The insight story Frank Lee Morris. In the movie entitled "Escape from Alcatraz" starring actor Clint Eastwood, Morris was accurately portrayed as the keen and brilliant mastermind of one of the most famous prison escapes in history. The escape plan took several months to If there was ever an inmate who was destined to escape from Alcatraz, it was design, and it would necessitate the fabrication of clever decoys and water survival gear. Frank Lee Morris had spent a lifetime navigating the prison system before his arrival on Alcatraz. From his infant years until his teens Morris was shuffled from one foster home to another, and he was convicted of his first crime at the youthful age of only thirteen. By the time he reached his later teens, Morris's criminal record would include a multitude of crimes ranging from narcotics possession to armed robbery, and he had become a professional inhabitant of the correctional system. He spent his formative years in a boys' training school, and then graduated to a series of ever larger penitentiaries. Morris was credited by prison officials as possessing superior intelligence, and he earned his ticket to Alcatraz by building an impressive resume of escapes. In 1960, Federal officials decided that his pattern of escape attempts, termed as "shotgun freedom" (although his escapes had never involved the use of a shotgun), would end at The Rock. On January 18, 1960, Morris disembarked from the prison launch and became inmate #AZ Frank's accomplices in the "Great Escape" were equally well acquainted with the dark world of organized crime. Brothers John and Clarence Anglin were also serving sentences at Alcatraz for bank robbery, having been convicted along with their brother Alfred. All three had been incarcerated at the Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta when they first became acquainted with Morris, and John and Clarence were eventually sent to Alcatraz following a sequence of attempted escapes. Alcatraz inmate Allen West, who occupied an adjacent cell, was also brought in on the scheme. He was serving his second term on The Rock and carried a reputation as an arrogant criminal, and he knew John Anglin from the State Penitentiary in Florida. 7

The escape plan started to take shape in December of 1961, beginning with a collection of several old saw blades that West allegedly found in one of the utility corridors while cleaning. In later interviews, West would take credit for masterminding the clever escape. The plan was extremely complex and involved the design and fabrication of ingenious lifelike dummies, water rafts, and life preservers, fashioned from over fifty rain coats that had been acquired from other inmates - some donated and some stolen. They would also require a variety of crudely made tools to dig with, and to construct the accessories necessary for the escape. By May of 1962, Morris and the Anglins and had already dug through the cell's six-by-nine-inch vent holes, and had started work on the vent on top of the cellblock. The Anglins inhabited adjacent cells, as did West and Morris, who also resided nearby. The inmates alternated shifts, with one working and one on lookout. They would start work at 5:30 p.m. and continue till about 9:00 p.m., just prior to the lights-out count. Meanwhile John and Clarence started fabricating the dummy heads, and even gave them the pet names of "Oink" and "Oscar." The heads were crude but lifelike, and were constructed from a homemade cementpowder mixture that included such innocuous materials as soap and toilet paper. They were decorated with flesh-tone paint from prison art kits, and human hair from the barbershop. Using glue stolen from the glove shop, the inmates also started working to cut and bond the raincoats into a makeshift raft and life preservers. Each evening following the completion of their self-imposed work detail, they would hide the materials on top of the cellblock to minimize any chance of being caught with the contraband materials. The inmates also acquired an elaborate array of handmade tools. West was able to lift an electric hair clipper while working on a paint detail in the barbershop, and he used the clippers, along with drill bits stolen from the Industries by another inmate, to fashion a makeshift motorized drill. However the motor proved be too small, and thus the project would require more effective equipment. Contemporary photos of the actual tools fashioned by the inmates to aid in their escape. The crudely made wrench was used effectively to remove the bolts on the rooftop ventilator grill. 8

Actual tool used by the inmates to chip away the cement around the grill. By a stroke of good luck, West had recently learned that the prison's vacuum had broken. He was permitted to attempt a repair, and while inspecting the machine, he found that it had two motors. He carefully removed one, and was able to get the other working, thus deflecting suspicion. Morris and the Anglins were then able to use the vacuum motor for their drill. They attempted to drill out the roof ventilator, but with only limited success. The motor proved too noisy, and it was not very effective. After months of long preparation the inmates had completed fashioning all of the gear they needed for their escape, and they then continued working to loosen the ventilator grill on top of the cellhouse. John Anglin carefully completed the valve assembly on a large six-by-fourteenfoot raft, while Morris modified an accordion-like musical instrument called a concertina, which would be used to rapidly inflate the raft. But while the others had progressed well in their various preparations, West had fallen behind in digging out the ventilator grill at the rear of his cell. His primary role had been to construct the life preservers and special wooden paddles for the raft, tasks which didn't require him to leave his cell. On the night of June 11, 1962, Morris indicated that the top ventilator was loose enough, and that he felt that they were ready to attempt the escape. An officer photographs the ventilator removed by the inmates The rooftop ventilator grill. 9

At 9:30 p.m., immediately after lights-out, Morris brought down the dummies from the top of the cellblock and announced that the escape would be staged that very night. Clarence Anglin attempted to assist West in removing his ventilator grill by kicking at it from outside of the cell in the utility corridor, but his efforts were unsuccessful. Morris and the Anglins would have no choice but to leave him behind. The inmates made their final thirty-foot climb up the plumbing to the cellhouse roof, traversed 100 feet across the rooftop, and then carefully maneuvered down fifty feet of piping to the ground near the entrance to the shower area. This would be the last anyone ever saw of Morris and the Anglin Brothers. In a later interview, West said that their plan had been to use their raft to make their way to Angel Island. After resting, they would then reenter the Bay on the opposite side of the island and swim through a waterway called Raccoon Straits, then on into Marin. They would steal a car, burglarize a clothing store, and then venture out in their own separate directions. West had finally been able to complete the removal of his grill and climb to the rooftop, but by then all of the other inmates had disappeared. With no raft or other means of escape, he was forced to return to his cell. SPECULATIONS For decades speculated abounded as to whether this famous escape attempt had been successful. The FBI spent several years investigating, and later resolved that the inmates' plan had failed. The following are only a few of the key points resulting from the investigation which cast doubt on the success of the famous escape from Alcatraz by Frank Morris and John and Clarence Anglin: The Morris and Anglins' escape later inspired the Hollywood motion picture Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood. 10

The formal plan was to steal a car and then perpetrate a burglary at a clothing store. No reports of any such crimes were filed in Marin County within a twelve-day period following the escape. Sources reported that these three men had neither friends nor relatives with the financial resources to come to San Francisco and assist in the escape. It would have cost thousands of dollars to put a boat in the Bay night after night, waiting for the one night when the escape actual took place. There would have been no way to communicate with outside contacts in order to confirm the date of the break and the progress of their preparations. Critics on the other side of the debate claimed that the fact that no bodies were found amounted to "proof" that the inmates had made it successfully to the mainland. The reality was that it was fairly common for people who perished in the Bay waters never to be found. In fact, on the very night of the escape, an African American gentleman named Seymour Webb, reportedly despondent over a failed relationship, abandoned his car mid-span on the Golden Gate Bridge and jumped to his death in front of numerous eyewitnesses. Despite a quick response from the Coast Guard, his body was never recovered. The significance of this event is that the suicide entered the water at about the same time as the escapees, and his body was never found or recovered. Exterior of Frank Morris's Cell Utility Corridor - Rear of Cell

The Bay water temperatures ranged from fifty to fifty-four degrees. It was determined that exposure to the elements would have affected body functions after approximately twenty minutes. The showers at Alcatraz were always supplied with moderately hot water, in order to hinder inmates from becoming acclimated to the freezing Bay waters. Personal items carried by the inmates were found floating in the Bay the following day. Also found was a life preserver with heavy teeth marks on the valve. It was believed that the homemade clip to seal the valve had failed, making it difficult for the swimmer to stay afloat. On July 17, 1962 the Ship SS Norefjell, a Norwegian Freighter departing from Pier 38, reported seeing a body floating twenty miles northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge. The ship was en route to Canada, and the crew failed to report the sighting until October. The sailors had noticed something bobbing in the water, and used binoculars to confirm that it was a body floating face down. The hands and feet were dangling down in the water, but the buttocks were clearly visible. Although bleached by the ocean and sun, the body was clothed in full-length denim trousers that appeared identical to prison issue uniforms. Coroners from San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, and Marin Counties all confirmed that a body could float for five weeks after drowning. The FBI determined this to be one of the most significant leads in the case. Their official report established that there were no other individuals missing or drowned at that time who had been wearing similar trousers. The families of the Anglins stated that the escape had been a topic of family discussions for several years. None of them had ever been contacted by the brothers, and they felt that the men would have made contact in some form if they had survived. The Anglin family would soon suffer yet another tragedy. The third brother, Alfred, was electrocuted while attempting to escape from Kilby Prison in Montgomery Alabama in The intriguing mystery of this escape is still being explored decades after the fact, and over a million visitors each year make the trip to Alcatraz to witness firsthand the scene of the crime. 12

The Greatest Escape from Alcatraz - Another Chapter... After decades of investigating, the F.B.I concluded that there were more key findings indicative of a failed escape rather than any findings or evidence that would suggest any of the inmates found their way to freedom. In the end, there was never any credible land based evidence that would lend to a positive outcome for any of the inmates. A little known fact about the famed great escape, is that there were initially six accomplices! June Stephens (1225-AZ), had been brought into the plan as early as December and occupied a cell on the third tier, directly above Morris and the Anglin Brothers. During a prison-wide shakedown following the escape, there were also holes found around the ventilation grill inside the cell of Robert L. Williams (1184-AZ). Williams, serving time for murder, later denied any direct involvement, but Stephens admitted his role and later revealed that Frank Morris asked him to withdraw due to three issues that he had felt would ultimately compromise their escape plan. The first was that each cell was having an additional water spout for warm water installed. While the backsides of the cells at ground level would be easy to conceal for officer inspections, there would be no way to conceal holes located at the backsides of the upper tier cells. Additionally, once the inmates had completed cutting around their grills, there was a risk that loose sections of the cement or grill could fall and alert officers to the escape plot. Finally, if they were successful going undetected, maneuvering out of the hole only being able to hold the pipes at such a high elevation would be much more difficult, not to mention it would be too dangerous emerging from a confined space at that height. 13

While Stephens role in the escape was believed to end five months prior to the date the plan was executed, his interviews with officials offered detailed descriptions on how the inmates carefully planning and effected their escape. While Robert Williams completely denied his role, Stephens later revealed that Morris and Williams worked together in the Glove Shop and stated that Williams probably had a significant role as both he and Morris were close friends and that he helped secure many of the articles that were used in the escape. Stephens was later tried and convicted for his role in the escape and sent to isolation. Stephen s died in November of 1995 and Williams in May of Crew members from the Freighter Ship Norefjell filed an official report stating they had seen a body floating about twenty miles west of the Golden Gate. While historians share different theories on why West didn t make it out, both West and Stephens both provided one common story that would suggest that West was left behind. 14

Other accomplices Alcatraz Inmate June Stephens was later confirmed by the F.B.I. as being an accomplice to the 1962 Alcatraz Escape. Holes found around the ventilator grill of June Stephen's cell on the third tier. Inmate Robert Williams considered a close associate of Frank Lee Morris, where they worked together in the Glove Shop at Alcatraz. Williams was serving a life sentence for murder. 15

An official F.B.I. Investigative Report provided the following statement of the escape: F.B.I. OFFICIAL INVESTIGATIVE SUMMARY REPORT An authorized complaint was filed June 13, 1962 before USC, San Francisco, charging escapees Morris and Anglin brothers with violation of title 18, section 751, U. S. Code. Federal warrants issued in bond recommended in the amount of $50,000 each. USA, San Francisco, withholding prosecution at this time: on June 12, 1962, at 7:15 AM, Frank Lee Morris, Alcatraz number 1441; John William Anglin, Alcatraz number 1476; and Clarence Anglin, Alcatraz number 1485, all inmates the United States penitentiary, Alcatraz Island, California, were discovered missing from their cells by officers of the penitentiary. Dummy faces were found in their beds. Their exit had been accomplished by digging holes in the back walls in the ventilator areas of their cells. Crawling through these holes into the utility corridor, they used the plumbing pipes to crawl on top of the third tier of cells. Thence, they broke out onto the roof of the cell house through bars any ventilator lid. They climbed down from the roof on the large pipe at the rear of the cell house and went over the fence, proceeding down steep embankments to the north east shore of the island in the vicinity of the power plant. A similar hole was discovered in Allen West s cell, Alcatraz number 1335, as well as dummy face, Wes stated they were to escape together, but the hole in the cell was not quite completed. At 9:37 PM on June 11, 1962, Morris went to get one of the Anglin's to assist West but they never returned. Later that night West completed the hole in his cell and proceeded to the roof but they were gone. These articles have been stored on top the third cell tier under the cell house roof were escapees had worked on the same in the evenings after breaking out of their cells. West returned to his cell and went to bed. He said they had planned to escape to Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, and then to the mainland. Upon arrival to the shore, they had planned to inflate the raft with a concertina which they had made into a bellows. They would then commit burglary to obtain guns and clothing and then steal a car to go as far from the Bay Area is possible beyond that no plans were formulated. Subjects at large are all convicted bank robbers and should be considered extremely dangerous. 16
