Attention Church & Charge Treasurers You should have now received an by conference with instructions on how to log online and get your church s statements from the Holston Conference instead of receiving them through the mail. The goal is to cut down on mailing expenses, be more eco-friendly and get information out to you faster. This only applies to Treasurers that have been recorded in the data base with an active address. If in doubt, contact Carol at the district office to confirm your address. Special Mission Offerings at Annual Conference 2014 At the 2014 session of Holston Annual Conference, there will again be a Special Mission Offering. This year the offering is designated to support education in South Sudan, with a goal of $175,000. Rev. Fred Dearing and his wife Libby are grateful and excited about the foundation for change that Holston continues to build in the lives of the people of South Sudan especially the children. In stating the potential significance of this offering, Rev. Dearing said, You will help us put pencils in the hands of children, instead of guns. Local churches should once again take up an offering for Change for Children during the month of May or prior to Annual Conference. The treasurer should place a check from the church in the envelope provided them by the conference and hand it to their lay member to annual conference or the pastor. The lay member or pastor should deliver it to the Change for Children table at the entrance of Stuart Auditorium on Tuesday, June 10 th. More information at connectionalministries@holston.org The Call Digest The Call Digest is available online in English and Spanish and is a mini-edition of The Call. Each edition contains news that will interest our UM congregations, and are released regularly. You can view current and past Digests. Read in a past issue about Emory & Henry s and State Street UMC s responses to a tragedy in Glade Spring as well as many other happenings across our conference. Please note, Pastors, that Holston s Digest would be a wonderful way to share conference news with your parishioners who don t use computers. It s easy to print, easy to share as a bulletin insert, or to make copies available in your church office. For more information about Digest or for back issues, visit 3

4 The Jeanette Reynolds Scholarship The Jeanette Reynolds Scholarship application for 2014 along with the Scholarship Guidelines is now available through our District Office. Any Holston Conference Student considering ministry in the United Methodist Church is eligible to apply. The scholarship deadline is May 15, Lake Junaluska Offering Many Experiences, Spring/Summer/Fall 2014 Singles Impact Retreat, May Youth Events, June Worship Series, June 15-August 10 Festival of Wisdom and Grace, July Choir Music Weekend, October Holston Conference Foundation Charitable Giving by the Numbers: According to Giving USA, 32% ($101.54B) of all charitable gifts went to religious causes and organizations in Such a high percentage of total giving going to one category suggests two logical conclusions about the Church: 1. giving people the opportunity to give each week must be effective; and 2. people must strongly believe in the work of the Church. Bequest giving is a totally different story. Only 5.6% of bequest gifts each year go to religious causes! This large discrepancy in overall giving indicates two things as well: 1. the Church is not asking for estate gifts as effectively as other categories such as higher education or healthcare-related causes, or 2. we do not articulate the vision of what an estate gift can do for the local church. The Holston Conference Foundation helps individuals to not only structure the best gift (not all planned gifts are endowments) that continues the work of the church or targets a designated need or ministry. We provide donor agreements and free consultation to those who want to discuss their hopes, dreams, fears and vision that usually accompany legacy gifts. The Foundation also empowers local church leadership to properly steward bequests and to share the vision of how bequests and other planned gifts can strengthen and foster a church and its ministries. The gap between 32% and 5.8% needs to close as we are facing an aging congregation and thus the greatest transfer of wealth this country will ever experience. Currently 7% of all charitable giving is received through bequests and this number is expected to DOUBLE to 14% in the next 10 years as our population ages. The question is this--what do you want to accomplish with either your legacy giving or as a leader in your church? We are here to not only help you answer that question but to fulfill the vision God has given you, your church and the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. Vital Signs Your District Superintendent is reviewing the online weekly Vital Signs with expectation that all churches have now registered and are keeping these up-to-date. Bishop Taylor is also watching your progress. Let s continue to use this valuable tool available to us. Carol Wilson, Executive Assistant to the Bishop, asked that we remind folks that the only comes out on Sunday evenings, so if they make changes they will not receive the invitation prompt at the new address until the following Sunday. If checking for accuracy does not get the delivered, then it may be blocked by your server. At that point, you need to add filings@trendsendapp.com to the address book in your to help it get through your security settings from your server. If further assistance is needed, please contact Sylvia Simpson, Vital Signs Coordinator, GCFA at or her at ssimpson@gcfa.org 4

6 Holston Conference Foundation/NEW Provide & Protect Church Workshops We all want to be remembered, to feel that we ve done something to make the world a better place. For some, this can be a driving force leading to great accomplishments and extraordinary contributions to mankind. But for most of us with more modest goals, what pushes us is the desire to leave a positive legacy, whether monetarily or otherwise. Your legacy is about far more than material things. It is putting your stamp on the future as well as honoring the past. There are many ways you can leave a legacy financially. The most obvious, of course, is bequeathing an inheritance to your survivors through your last will and testament. You can also make a gift to your local church or favorite charity. Your options are many and through the Foundation s expertise, attendees to Provide and Protect workshops are provided with everything needed to know how to create a plan that reflects your values and perhaps even leaves a lasting legacy for your local church and/or favorite ministry. Each workshop participant receives a free copy of Provide & Protect, the Foundation s new 276-page estate planning guide. Contact the Holston Conference Foundation to discuss hosting a workshop at your church soon. Foundation staff or call As always, Foundation seminars and individual consultations are free of charge. 8 Photo from Wesley Center of Chattanooga Cleveland District Churches support the Wesley Center at Chattanooga through district apportionments. Rev. G. Keith Moore, Campus Minister/Director, thought you d enjoy seeing a picture of a recent outing to Cloudland Canyon. Cleveland District UMW Report from Carolyn Haerr The Cleveland District United Methodist Women met for our Day Apart and Mission Event in March at Tasso UMC. Rev. Heidi Johnson was our speaker and Camp Horizon, a special camp for children with physical disabilities, was our mission focus. We enjoyed hearing Rev. Johnson's message about "Harvesting Generosity" and the music provided by Tasso's pastor, Rev. Mark Barber and his wife, Elsilynn. Many supplies for Camp Horizon were donated. On April 12, we held a joint Cleveland/Chattanooga Mini Social Action Event at Cleveland 1st UMC. We learned about the topics of Money Management, presented by Marilyn Miller, CASA by Frances McMahan, and Nutrition by Sara Kite. About 55 UMW members attended this event. It was well received so we are planning to repeat the event next year. The location and topics presented will be determined at a later date. The Cleveland District UMW has big plans for 2014: May is the UMW Spiritual Enrichment Experience at Lake Junaluska and will feature Jane Rubietta as our speaker. She is a nationally recognized Christian speaker and it should be a real treat to attend this year and hear her inspiring message. June 21 we plan a Mission Trip to the Habitat for Humanity s Restore store to help with whatever they need help with cleaning, sorting goods, shelving items for sale and the like. This is a resale shop that benefits Habitat for Humanity. Many of our individual UMW groups also have plans and mission events that they are taking part in. We also have continued to collect bras for the Free the Girls project. If you want to be a part of a group of women who show their Faith, Hope and Love in Action, join us at one or more of these events. 8
