This is the second death T H E P O P U L A T I O N O F H E L L Numerous are those who have pondered the question throughout history, How far from Paradise to Hell? Ancient volumes such as Dante s Inferno and Milton s Paradise Lost demonstrate how attractive this topic has been over the years. Due to today s technology we know that it is exactly miles according to MapQuest and I-75 is the road to Hell. Hell claims a population of 266 souls and a zip code of I speak of Hell, Michigan, of course, and not the place populated by the Devil and his angels (Mat. 25:41). - b y R i c k P o p e j o y And he cried... I am tormented in this flame. Luke 16:24 The Bible tells us exactly who will be in hell. Here is an exhaustive list: But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death (Rev. 21:8). For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie (Rev. 22:15). Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal. 5:19-21). Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9-10). Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Mat. 7:21-23). For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness... Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them (Rom. 1:18, 29-32). Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels... And these shall go away into everlasting punishment... (Mat. 25:41, 46).

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. A Place Called Hell Revelation 20:13-14 While some assert acceptance of biblical inspiration (2 Tim. 3:16), they vehemently deny many of the plain teachings found within the Sacred Pages. These rejections of infallible truths may be ascribed to human weakness. Whether it be extreme emotionalism in dealing with their loved ones future state of horrendous punishment, or a sugarcoated safety net for their own sinfulness we cannot tell. Jesus declared the sole solution in avoiding the terror of the Lord (2 Cor. 5:11) as he spoke, Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is heaven (Mat. 7:21). The biblical record emphatically proves beyond the shadow of doubt the absolute reality of a place named hell (gehenna). Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, often preached about this final abode that would house all men in an unsaved condition. In fact of the twelve times this word appears in the New Testament our Lord utilized it eleven times. Thus, the Master Teacher was a hell, fire, and brimstone preacher! Just as sure as there is a real place named heaven, there is a real place named hell. Most people who reject the biblical doctrine of the reality of hell somehow accept the biblical doctrine of the reality of heaven! Convenient, huh? Such is a failure to rightly divide the word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15). Our Saviour taught on both of these places in Matthew 7:13-14: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Was Christ simply pretending, or merely trying to scare people? Absolutely not! He taught this truth while preaching His Sermon on the Mount. And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine (Mat. 7:28). Why? For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes (Mat. 7:29). Undoubtedly, Jesus taught and preached on the doctrine of hell as an authentic place. Where the Worm Dieth Not And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Heb. 9:27). Jesus Christ is God (Jho. 1:1, 14), and God that cannot lie (Tit. 1:2), who is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34) shall sit upon His throne of His glory (Mat. 25:31) and impart universal judgment over all the souls of humanity. The apostle Paul declared, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Cor. (Continued on page 5)

3 R e f l e c t i o n s Page 3 W H A T M A K E S F A T A L F A L S E D O C T R I N E - b y T o m W a c a s t e r First, any doctrine that causes a person to sin is a doctrine that is fatal. Take, for example, a false doctrine regarding baptism. An erroneous doctrine on this vital subject will cause a man to fail to be baptized, fail to respect the only authorized action (immersion, pouring, etc.), and/or fail to respect the purpose and importance of this act of obedience. Second, if the doctrine violates either specific or general authority in the "thing" being done, then it is a fatal false doctrine. God authorizes "singing" in worship (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). Instrumental music violates the authority regarding the "thing" being done for the simple reason that there is no authority for it. Third, if the doctrine changes the nature and/or structure of the church, then it is a fatal false doctrine. Premillennialism is a fatal false doctrine because it changes the nature of the church, viewing it as some "accident" or "afterthought" in the mind of God. Fourth, any doctrine that causes a person to commit a moral or unethical act is a fatal false doctrine. Jude spoke of "certain men crept in privily, even they who were of old written of beforehand unto this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ" (Jude 4). It is difficult to imagine someone upholding a vile, immoral practice and doing such in the name of religion. To our amazement there are just such socalled "Christian" teachers who uphold homosexuality, gambling, and imbibing alcoholic beverages, to name just a few. Fifth, any doctrine that denigrates the nature of God is a fatal false doctrine. Such error was evident among the gentiles in the first century: "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves: for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen" (Rom. 1:22-25). When men teach that Jesus Christ is not divine, or that there is only one member of the "godhead," they have taught fatal false doctrine. Sixth, if the doctrine denigrates, de-emphasizes, or seeks to substitute God s word with something more, or less, than what has been revealed, it is a fatal false doctrine. This is because of the repeated emphasis in the Bible with regard to the importance of, power of, and sufficiency of the divinely revealed word (2 Pet. 1:3; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Rom. 1:16-17). The very first sin in the history of mankind began with a de-emphasis upon the word of God. The devil, in the form of the subtle serpent, first asked Eve, "Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Gen. 3:1). He sought to put a doubt in her mind with regard to God s clear command. Then the devil denied God s word and told Eve, "Ye shall not surely die" (Gen. 3:4). Today men deemphasize the importance of God s word by teaching modern day revelation. This would substitute God s word with the teaching of men. Others would seek to rob the word of its God-given power. The author of Hebrews upheld the power of God s word: "For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Heb. 4:12). Paul declared the power of the gospel: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek" (Rom. 1:16). Paul declared the all-sufficiency of the gospel: "Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work" (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Peter likewise addressed the all sufficiency of a knowledge of God s word to provide "all things that pertain to life and godliness" (2 Pet. 1:3). Any doctrine that seeks to rob the word of its power and authority is a fatal doctrine. ~R

4 Page 4 V o l u m e 2, N u m b e r 3 T H E R O A D T O H E L L... - b y D a v i d D u g a n H E If I leave my home in Oklahoma and travel north to Michigan and arrive in the town of Hell, Michigan some would say that I had been on the road to hell or had went to hell. But I could return from Hell, Michigan to my home in Oklahoma. In the place called hell in the Bible no one has ever returned from there to report to us of the terribleness of hell (Luke 17). So many people are like the rich man who blissfully go through life not caring about others, nor what God requires of man. Then when death comes they find themselves in the Hadean world separated from God and the bliss of Abraham s bosom with a great gulf fixed between them and they are unable to go into the peace of where God is caring for the faithful. If you remember the rich man was in torment and only wanted one drop of water to quench his thirst momentarily. None came. He remains in that tormented state until this day. All because he did not pay attention to his soul. The road to hell is broad Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it (NKJV). The road to hell is enticing because there are so many taking that road and it is so popular (Pro. 1:10-11). The road to hell is easy choices; because if you do something that is popular (drugs, alcohol, sex outside of marriage; cohabitation, gambling) you will blend into the multitude (Exo. 23:2). The road to hell is filled with many people. Picture the beginning of the Boston Marathon with a mass of people jammed between the buildings of a street as far as the eye can see. Now multiply that millions of times over. Moses wrote: You shall not follow a multitude to do evil (Exo. 23:2). You see when people follow the multitude of this world they will end up in hell. Yet the good news is that persons on the road to hell can change their destination simple by choosing to do God s will. To hear (Rom. 10:17); believe Jho. 3:16); repent (Acts 17:30); confess Jesus as Savior (Rom. 10:9-10); and be baptized into Christ (Gal. 3:26-27). The apostle Paul was on the road to hell for he did not believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of mankind nor that Christians were doing right in God s sight. Remember he called himself chief of sinners (1 Tim. 1:15); but we know by his own mouth and pen that he changed to be a disciple of Christ as simple a New Testament Christian (Acts 22:16). An interesting point about the apostle Paul is that all the time he was on the road to hell (before his baptism) he did not think he was on the road to hell. For he thought he was doing what God wanted him to do for he did his persecuting of Christians in all good conscience (Acts 23:1). A host of people are in the same situation today. They pursue what the world does and thinks; but do not desire to do what God wants them to. One can read Paul s epistle to Corinth and find those who had been on the (Continued on page 5) Hell is a place... Where there is unquenchable fire (Mat. 3:12) Where there is black darkness (Jude 13) Where there is a furnace of fire (Mat. 13:42; 50) Where there is wailing & gnashing of teeth (Mat. 13:42; 50) Where there is fire & brimstone (Luke 17:29; 13 other places) Where the smoke of their torment rises (Rev. 14:11) Where the lake of fire burns with brimstone (Rev. 19:10; 20:10; 21:8) Where their worm does not die (Mark 9:42, 46, 48) That last forever (Jude 13) Prepared for the devil and his angels (Mat. 25:41) If there is no Hell? Jesus is a liar (Mat. 5:22, 29-30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luke 12:5). The Scriptures are wrong (Jas. 3:6; Rev. 20:14-15). Heaven is a myth (Mat. 25:46; Jho. 5:28-29; 2 The. 1:7-9). Redemption is unnecessary (Rom. 5:8-10).

5 R e f l e c t i o n s Page 5 L L Those who are going down the road to hell are: Homosexuals (Rom. 1:26-27) Abusers of children and adults (Eph. 6:4) Covetous (Heb. 13:5) Sexually active outside of marriage (Heb. 13:4) Users of drugs and alcohol (Gal. 5:19) Hypocrites (Mat. 6; 23) False teachers (Rom. 16:17-18; 2 Pet. 2:1-3) Those who maliciously spread diseases, such as AIDS (Mat. 22:37; 7:12) Those who are believe themselves to be religiously right, but are not living as the Bible teaches (Mat. 7:21-22) Those who are against God: Atheist, who has said there is no God (Psa. 14:1) Those who are against Christ: Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and denominationalists of all stripes (Eph. 4:4; 1:22,23; Col. 3:15) Those who have aborted children by choice (Mat. 5:21) Those who have committed selfmurder suicide (Mat. 5:21) (Continued from page 2) 5:10). The standard of which Christ will utilize to execute final judgment will be the word. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day (Jho. 12:48). On that final Day of Judgment Christ will separate the (Mat. 25:32) souls of men into two permanent and eternal groups, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats (Mat. 25:32). Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world (Mat. 25:34). Nevertheless, in this article we shall emphasize the sobering fact of reality of what shall occur to those on the other side. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels (Mat. 25:41). Furthermore, these shall go away into everlasting punishment (Mat. 25:46). How do we know that the everlasting punishment (Mat. 25:46) is literal? The word punishment in Matthew 25:46 is from the same Greek word we find in Acts 4:21. There the Bible says, So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. It is quite obvious that these words are in reference to real, absolute, literal punishment. Paul adds, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power (2 The. 1:8-9). The severity of punishment is vividly portrayed within the Bible which serves us as a lasting reminder. Jesus declared, And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both body and soul in hell (Mat. 10:28). Hell is a place, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched (Mark 9:48). The worm depicts the corruption of this future abode! The phrase, the fire is not quenched (Mark 9:48) speaks of the pain, torment and literal punishment the inhabitants of that place will receive in an endless state of misery, having no hope of a better day. The constant state of agony and suffering will fill the place called hell (gehenna). Sad, but true, the Bible says, And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:15). May lessons like these exhort us to move with godly fear (Heb. 11:7) as we attempt to fulfill the whole duty of man (Ecc. 12:13). At any cost may we avoid this awful place named hell as we look to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2). Think on these things. ~R (Continued from page 4) road to hell because they had been fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, homosexuals, sodomites, thieves, covetous, drunkard, revilers, and extortioners (1 Cor. 6:9-10). But they were told if they continued in these sins or went back to them they would not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9). Thankfully, these brethren had been washed [baptized Acts 2:38], but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God (1 Cor. 6:11). Paul was warning the brethren at Corinth that they were now back on the road to hell (not his words specifically; but the intent is correct DCD] and he wanted them to come back to the strait and narrow way (Mat. 7:13, 14). ~R

Between the two of us, Brant and I will be holding numerous meetings each year, wherever they are needed and appreciated. Associated with many of these meetings will be a door knocking campaign with the assistance of members from the Lindsay congregation. 2. Vacation Bible Schools. To help small struggling congregations in this region to utilize this tool to teach and make contacts in their communities. 3. Teacher Training Workshops. We conduct two of these: one elementary and motivational. The second is geared more to serious teachers who want to improve their teaching skills. Both are designed to help develop principles of teaching in teachers. 4. Evangelism Workshops. This is an old fashion approach designed to involve every member in evangelism in some way, to some degree. We offer no shortcuts; only a hard-work approach. 5. Leadership Workshops. Principles of spiritual maturity are emphasized as a foundation for leadership. 6. Special Training Classes. These are in-depth classes on a collegiate level. 7. Special Seminars & Helps. Sometimes a congregation needs a special effort for a particular purpose. Sometimes doctrinal, moral, family or spiritual issues arise. 8. Booklets. We have edited two titles (Healing the Home and Satisfying the Soul). We hope to print 5,000 each time and make these available to churches for edification and evangelism purposes. 9. Religious Survey. We have designed two religious surveys to help assist the local congregation to better understand the make-up of the community in which it works. 10. Radio Work. We have seven radio stations presently. These are 5-30 minute lessons delivered to evangelize the lost and edify the saint. 11. Internet Work. The Reflections blog is designed as a teaching tool. Herein anyone, anytime, anywhere in the world can access teachings on prime topics from a biblical perspective. 12. Campaigns. The congregation in Lindsay is a very evangelistic-minded church. Over the past three months the brethren here have conducted four campaigns resulting in numerous baptisms and restorations, eleven in Virginia alone, where a Methodist preacher and his wife was converted to the truth of the gospel. 13. Reflections. This is the bread & butter of the work. Over a year and a half ago, Brant and I began printing with only 10,000 pieces the first issue. Reflections has grown to 76,000 printed this last issue. We now saturate the states of Oklahoma, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Jersey and New Hampshire as well as sending the paper to many individuals and congregations in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee and Alabama. WORK Advantages: ❶ A house to house as well as a public approach. ❷ Personal contacts made within local communities. ❸ Helping local brethren establish & teach home Bible studies. ❹ Helping local congregations with leadership issues. ❺ Helping members of the local congregation edify one another. ❻ Helping to revitalize otherwise rotting congregations. Needed Principles: ❶ An old-fashion work ethic applied to the church. ❷ A strong sense of ethics and morality. ❸ An aggressiveness with the gospel of Jesus Christ. ❹ Saturation with the gospel. This method of saturation was first brought to my attention by a missionary in Wyoming of whom I learned a great deal from regarding evangelism. May God bless this effort for His mighty cause.

7 R e f l e c t i o n s Page 7 Unto thy people Wesley Wilson Homer Dacus July 2006 was a very difficult month for Reflections. Two men who loved the truth and supported the preaching and teaching of the gospel fell prey to death and passed from this life to depart for the hereafter. Wesley Wilson of Newcastle, Oklahoma and a member of the Southern Ridge Church of Christ in Oklahoma City, departed this life on Sunday, July 16, He and Lorella wrote the first check to Reflections and helped it to begin. Brother Wilson is survived in the home by his lovely wife Lorella. Homer Dacus of Lindsay, Oklahoma departed this life on July 20, A long time member of the Hwy. 19 Church of Christ, Homer is described as a dedicated member who will be truly missed. His generosity reached many lives. We are forever indebted to Homer for his constant support of this good work. Homer is survived in the home by his lovely wife Edna. Although both of these men accomplished much good for their respected families, and communities during their life, no doubt their greatest assist was that they were fellowhelpers to the truth. Let us be glad for men of such qualities. 8 At the request of the Lindsay elders, Rick Popejoy has made his move to Lindsay, Oklahoma to work under their oversight as an evangelist. Rick will be available to congregations for gospel meetings; seminars; lectures; workshops; training classes; and will serve as the campaign director for the church in Lindsay. This move will allow brother Popejoy to spend more time with Reflections as well as radio and eventually television. In the last three years, sixteen congregations have shut their doors in Oklahoma alone. Our long term goal is to help build the weak and struggling churches of the Lord in this region into strong congregations with the ability and desire to carry the gospel into all the world. To help churches elevate their member s concept of the church and to animate their faith in Christ where and when needed. In order to accomplish this worthy goal, we have these objectives in mind: 1.
