Rotaract Discussion Productive By RRPIC Mike Forney We had four Rotaractors and about 18 Rotarians in the Brighton Room Saturday to discuss Rotaract. It was a lively and very interesting discussion. Among the ideas developed: Rotaractors are drawn to Rotary/Rotary club when they are offered mentoring and opportunities to learn about vocations and the way things are done by the business and professional people. They are very interested in learning about the broader picture of Rotary. They love hearing Rotary moments and experiencing Rotary at work. Quite often attending meetings doesn t provide that. Many of the speakers are not of interest to us. They enjoy participating in Rotary traditions, even singing, opening prayers and the Four Way Test. But they get quickly turned off when they experience cliques in meetings that leave them on the outside with no one to talk to. They know social media but don t like to be marginalized when Rotarians assume they are there to help the club with its website or FaceBook page to the exclusion of other things. Communication with their own members is just as difficult as with the Rotary club. They prefer texting but best of all is personal communication through face-to-face or telephone. Good idea: Don t limit Rotaract Club sponsorship to one Rotary club. Regionalize the support and involvement by giving them all the clubs in the area with which to partner. Good idea: When a Rotaract member graduates or leaves a college-based club, find out where they are going and what their interests are and communicate it to a Rotary club in their new town. Good idea: Get to know a Rotaractor by inviting them to your home or family event. College students have a hole in their family lives if they are going to school. Many Rotarians may also have a hole in their family as empty nesters. The impact you have on us when we spend time with you is incredible. You inspire us when we understand what you are doing.
