1 Volume XXVI, Issue 1 January 2012 Don t Forget! VISION 2012 and Beyond! You have heard this, but it is worth repeating: Session has been operating differently this year. This year, Session chose to become even more engaged in Broadway s ministry than ever before, and our emphasis is on Faith. We Believe is more than the theme of our fall Pledge and Member Drive. We truly do believe, and we have faith that God will work through Broadway according to our faith in Him. For example, this year Session again cut the budget. This time Local Mission was the target, but you probably didn t notice, because... the Survival English for Foreign Speakers continued with child care, the afterschool program focusing on refugee youth expanded into a successful summer enrichment program, the computer lab expanded from an assortment of 20 computers to two labs with a total of 35 standard Dell computers, a computer in the Great Hall was added for community use, our community garden expanded from one plot for four families to five plots for more than 100 families, as many families (maybe more) were clothed, and at least a half-dozen apartments were furnished for families. How was all that possible with little money and only a handful of members efforts? Session had more help from our friends in the community than ever before and more generous donations from beyond our walls, but most importantly Session had Faith and God truly was generous. Now, imagine what we could do with a little faith and courage from even more of us! In January, Session struggled with a Plan to Grow Our Church Family. Session wisely decided to wait and share a plan when it was more complete. Session promised to report to you, but no report came. Session was frustrated that it didn t seem to come together quickly. There always seemed to be obstacles. Perhaps we needed to realize that if we were truly following God s plan, then we needed to understand that we were on God s schedule, too. At the picnic following the Renewal of Baptism Service in September, Session members shared a brief taste of our Vision Session will share the entire vision with the congregation at the Annual Meeting in January Here s the catch to get the entire Vision 2012 (not just for the next 12 months, but a 3-5 year plan!), you will need to come to the Annual Meeting. When is the Annual Meeting? It will begin on January 8 during Worship, the Ordination of new Elders, and Vision 2012 Part 1. It will continue with Parts 2 and 3 during Worship on January 15 and 22, and will end with the Business Meeting during Worship on January 29 and Vision 2012 Part 4. This year our Annual Meeting will be a MONTH OF SUNDAYS at Broadway that you won t want to miss! - Brian McMaster, Clerk of Session Happy New Year from your Broadway Office Staff & Volunteers. We pray that 2012 is a year full of blessings, joy, and hope for everyone in our Broadway Family! Don t miss out on Smart Choice this month! Great food, very reasonable prices and some of the money comes back to Broadway! (see Menu on p.3) January orders are due by January 6, and distribution will be on January 21. 2 Broadway Visitor Page 2 Thank You! Thank you for your thoughts, words, prayers and cards sent to me and my family at the time of the loss of my grandson Adam. I can t tell you how much that meant to us. Your thoughtfulness was deeply felt and appreciated. Thank you for your love and caring. - Helen Smith O u r T h o u g h t s a n d P r a y e r s We pray for health, hope, and joy for all in our Broadway family and community. May 2012 be a year of growth for Broadway as a church, and for each of us individually. May we continue to shine God s light and share His hope with those around us. Please note: If you or a loved one is hospitalized or scheduled for surgery, please notify the church office as soon as you are able. P r e s b y t e r i a n W o m e n On December 9, the PW held their Christmas Luncheon. The turn-out was very good and so was the food. Before we had lunch, we were entertained by the Blackhawk College Chamber Choir. They were great. After the lunch, we had the reading of the Christmas story from the Book of Luke by Virginia Houlton. Jeanette McLaughlin installed the 2012 officers, who are: Moderator, Shirley Nelson; Vice Moderator, Cherry McIlvain; Secretary, Lois Larson; Treasurer, Judy Medley; Coordinator of Studies, Virginia Houlton; and Coordinator of Mission Activities, Pat Cross. On December 11, PW held a No Tag Bake Sale before and between church services. A big THANK YOU to all who made the Luncheon and Bake Sale possible and a success. We have a new name for the two circles that merged into one; it will be known as the Friendship Manor Circle. The Circle meets at noon at Friendship Manor on the 2nd Thursday, after a nice little lunch, they have their lesson. There will not be a meeting in January. Rebekah Circle meets at the church on the 3rd Thursday at the church. The PW would like to invite any women attending Broadway to join them in their Circle meetings. Contact Barbara Marx, leader of the Friendship Manor Circle ( ) or Alice Heimbeck, leader of the Rebekah Circle ( ). Or you can contact Shirley Nelson, Moderator ( ), or Lois Larson, Secretary ( ). Please think about it. We wish everyone a Blessed New Year! - Shirley Nelson, PW Moderator

4 Broadway Visitor Page 4 B r o a d w a y I s s u e s C l a s s Happy New Year! The Issues class always has room for a few good inquisitive, funny, opinionated women and men. The class discusses a wide range of issues and periodically hosts guest speakers. The subjects we discuss each Sunday after the Traditional worship service range from current news to on-going local to global topics. Discussion, though, always incorporates Scripture for guidance and insight. And, as the class has been fortunate for the past several years, the guest speakers present subjects they have been involved with for much of their career or are a lifelong interest. Recently, Frank Lambert, our church treasurer, presented his insight on the banking industry and his current work in this industry. And, in early December, Dr. Aracelli Masterson, a Spanish Studies professor at Augustana College, talked on how we can easily stereotype a migrant. J a n u a r y L e c t i o n a r y January 1 Isa. 61:10-62:3 Ps. 148 Gal. 4:4-7 Luke 2:22-40 January 8 Gen. 1:1-5 Ps. 29 Acts 19:1-7 Mark 1:4-11 January 15 1 Sam. 3:1-20 Ps. 139:1-6, Cor. 6:12-20 John 1:43-51 January 22 Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Ps. 62:5-12 I Cor. 7:29-31 Mark 1:14-20 January 29 Deut. 18:15-20 Ps Cor. 8:1-13 Mark 1:21-28 Don t miss out on the discussions. All who have a curious bug, member or non-member, are welcome to attend. - Yancy Bolden K a r o n B o o k C l u b In January, the Karon Book Club will meet at Miss Mamie s in Moline on January 11 at 11:30. We ll be discussing Hurricanes in Paradise by Denise Hildreth. In February, we ll discuss The President s Wife: Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography by Ishbel Ross. We ll meet on February 8 at 11:30 at Dead Poet s Espresso, rd Avenue A, Moline. Hurricanes in Paradise When Riley Sinclair stepped into her new job as director of guest relations at a posh resort on Paradise Island, she felt the final pieces of her once-broken life coming together. But the waters become choppy when Riley discovers that some who come to the Atlantis Hotel are accompanied by paralyzing secrets and overwhelming fears. Riley and three guests are in desperate but unknowing need of each other, eventually forging unlikely but powerful friendships. With a hurricane headed straight for the island, together they embark on a journey of laughter, heartache, and healing. The President s Wife: Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography (This review is from the book). I found this novel about Mary Lincoln to be an informative biography about a very misunderstood historical lady. Mrs. Lincoln s behavior would not have been questioned in the present day. She was an eccentric, ambitious, intelligent woman who very obviously supported her husband s rise to the Presidency and believed in the preservation of the Union. Mrs. Lincoln suffered through illness, slander and gossip and unimaginable tragedies while in Springfield and in Washington during the Civil War. Then with President Lincoln s assassination she was expected to live in a world where she no longer had her greatest supporter and protector. Mary Lincoln was a lady born before her time; in modern day her intelligence and drive would have been respected. Ishbel Ross use of historical documentation of Mary Lincoln s life to describe the life of this amazing, intelligent and many times erratic woman shows much research on the subject. - Judy Medley
