4 PRESIDENT S REPORT The members of Dannevirke Host Lions Club should be extremely proud of the huge effort that was put in to ensure that the Christmas Parade and the Old Folks Christmas Lunch, over the weekend of the 6 th and 7 th of December, were the success that they were. The Christmas Lunch was a joy to behold. We often forget, as we journey through our busy lives, that many of our elderly residents do not enjoy the fellowship and company of others. It was accordingly great to be able to bring so many of our elderly folk together, and honour them for the contribution that they have made to our community during their lifetime. The food and entertainment was superb, and the pleasure and joy could be plainly seen on many of the elderly s faces. Well done Lions! Instead of our usual monthly social meeting Lion Kim put together a Christmas Function of our own. The journey to the Pongaroa Hotel was a long and winding one, but it was filled with much mirth, merriment and song (thanks to Lion Mike). Kim had a plentiful supply of pre-dinner snacks, along with some rather interesting jellies. The hospitality at the Hotel was fantastic and the food delicious. Many thanks Kim for organising this event for us. Although the Board will be meeting, there will not be a Business Meeting this month. The first meeting in the New Year is a Business Meeting scheduled for 28 January Until then I take this opportunity of thanking you all for your invaluable assistance in serving our community. You do it well, and you do it with pride. May you all have a joyful and relaxing Christmas with family and friends, and a very Happy New Year. PRESIDENT MURRAY

5 *** FLASHBACK *** 2000 Wheels With Attitude Anyone with even the slightest interest in anything on wheels will be pleased to know that Wheels with Attitude Expo 2000 is on at the Dannevirke A & P Show grounds on Sunday 9 th April from 11am to 3pm. This is the third year the Dannevirke Host Lions Club have organised this event and are expecting it to be the biggest and best yet. name it and the odds are that it will be there. Again all types of vehicles are expected from classic cars, vintage cars, unique and rare cars, hot rods, tractors, farm machinery, traction engines, buses, motor cycles, in fact you Wheels with Attitude Expo convenor Roger Burson says there are also some special features which include a section for people who have personalised plates on their vehicles. Also expected said Roger are a large turnout of motor cycles from the Ulysses and BMW motor cycle clubs from throughout the lower half of the North Island. If you have wheels you would like to enter you can contact Roger Burson or just turn up on the day. This is a great family fun day and there are BBQs and other food stalls and drink on the grounds. Admission is only $2 for adults and $1 for children, and profits go back into the community. A day not to be missed.

6 MEMBERSHIP REPORT It is with great pleasure that we welcome Helen Navest, Leah Kelly-Frith and David Frith as new members of Dannevirke Host Lions and we look forward to the energy and enthusiasm you bring to the club. One of the challenges we face as a group is to continue to be meaningful for members who not only juggle busy family lives with full-time work, but also have a deep commitment to get involved in effective service to our community through involvement in Lions. 7 PONGAROA CHRISTMAS TRIP SOCIAL PROGRAMMES We left town full of joy and laughter. We had our own Eric Clapton (Mike Harold) busking out a few tunes for us to sing along to. Pongaroa Hotel braced itself for our arrival the locals took off to the garden bar. After socialising, we enjoyed a lovely meal with a lot of high-jinks in the dining room. We then returned to the bar and cranked up the juke-box, where some HIDDEN talent came out on the dance floor and the bar leaners. This has given me some more ideas for a social event next year. ( Be scared!!) We were even joined by 3 half naked firemen lordy they were very lucky to get out of the bar in one piece! We then returned to Dannevirke with more singing New Zealands got Talent won t be knocking on some of your doors XX. Thank you to all my helpers XOXO. Once in town we let off some fireworks that half the town would have heard thank you Maurice Millar for your big bang. The end of the year has come quicker than usual so I wish my Social Programme Team a Merry Christmas and enjoy the rest!! To my fellow Lions Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

8 PROJECTS REPORT With Christmas fast approaching it is timely to reflect on the past year. We have continued to live up to the Lions motto of we serve with the efforts of Club members to continue to turn out for various projects throughout the year regardless of what the weather gods throw our way! Fortunately we were favoured by them on our latest project which was to trim back trees for Yvonne Popow which were causing some problems with her neighbours. In the New Year we shall also be painting fences for older Club members as part of our Members Maintenance Programme. A big thank you to all those who have assisted with projects over the past year. Currently we have our older members who are no longer able to help with our more physical projects, selling our Christmas raffle. With Lindy and Mary both incapacitated, there have been fewer people available to assist with this project, and I would like to say a big thank you to those who have stepped up to fill the gaps. There have been some good ideas put forward for our centennial year which I shall be bringing to members at our next business meeting. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and look forward to continuing the good work in the New Year. Mike Brock.

9 BOOK SALE REPORT Bookworms met last Monday, 8 th Dec. and put to rights the area under the stage (which we had cleared for the dance productions) so that we can continue to sort. There are fifty cartons waiting to be gone through and we agreed to leave this marathon until after Christmas as we are all doing so many other things in the run-up. We have booked the Town Hall for the week Mon. 20 th to Mon. 27 th incl. July, 2015 for our forthcoming 26 th Sale of Books. Can I thank all the bookworms for their fun and friendship and willing assistance and wish them and their families a very happy Christmas and a bright New Year. Best wishes to fellow Lions. Barb. Convenor. ALMONER S REPORT Mary continues along and has had a further course of antibiotics. Let s hope this does the trick for our brave Lion friend. She has had many visitors and her family keeps track of her medical progress. It s been a long road but, hopefully, Mary will soon be able to look towards home. I saw Mary two weeks ago and also visited Julie Ross who was in hospital after a very daunting episode. She was home again and on the road to recovery and feeling well when I phoned her last Wednesday. Lindy also has had a successful knee operation but infection has slowed her mobility. So Christmas Greetings to our Lion ladies who have had a bit more to deal with than they needed and we are all thinking of them. Cheers Barb. The three stages of life: 1. 10 COMMUNITY WELFARE REPORT By the time we get to read this report the dust will have settled on another very successful Christmas Party. It couldn t have been done without the full support of the many Lions and their partners. We catered for well over 100 seniors, who again enjoyed the hospitality shown by the Lions. That we were able to fit in around the Christmas parade, which again stretched us as a Club, shows just how willing fellow Lions rally round for the occasion. We could not do this without the support of the various groups who donate their goods or premises: Dannevirke Sports Club, Mangatera Hotel, Dannevirke Info Centre, Dannevirke High School and the various entertainers who donated their time. The good news, the club willing, we will continue to carry this tradition on for next year and honour our seniors with this special seasonal gift. Seasonal Greetings Lion Steve

11 Irish Explanation The mother-in-law arrives home from shopping to find her son-in-law Paddy in a steaming rage and hurriedly packing his suitcase, What happened Paddy? she asks anxiously. What happened!! I ll tell you what happened. I sent an to my wife (your daughter) telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home... and guess what I found? Yes your daughter, my wife Jean, naked with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable, the end of our marriage. I m done. I m leaving for ever! Ah now, calm down, calm down Paddy! says his mother-in- law. There is something very odd going on here. My daughter would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I ll go and speak to her immediately and find out what happened. Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. Paddy. I told you there must be a simple explanation...she never got your !!

13 Santa with his young helpers, Charlotte, Stephanie, Thomas and Oliver handed out Christmas sweets to everyone, and they were all invited to take the floral posies decorating the tables home as well. Lots of lovely comments afterwards and all looking forward to coming again next year.

14 LIONS CHRISTMAS FLOAT 2014 Another great Christmas Parade, and wasn t the weather kind, no wind or rain, obviously the powers that be chose the right day. Lots of people turned out to watch. As we came along it was great to watch the children looking out for Santa and waiting for a wave. We had two beautiful fairies on board and they were receiving lots of acknowledgement as well, and all the Lions walking with the float and handing out sweets. Thank you to the merry men who helped assemble the float, and all those who came along after to help pull it apart and stow it all away ready for next year. Many thanks to David and Donald Dunford who loan their farm trailer each year, to Trevor Stephenson for loaning us a new Kubota tow vehicle complete with Christmas decorations,
