2 2 Jesus Talks To The Disciples About God s Care Texts: Luke 12:1-12, 1. In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 4. And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. 6. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. 8. Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9. But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost (Spirit) it shall not be forgiven.

3 3 11. And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: 12. For the Holy Ghost (Spirit) shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. Commentary: Luke 12:1, In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. I. After Jesus left the Pharisee s house with whom he had eaten; that is, In the meantime, under these circumstances, many thousands gathered to hear Jesus. A. There were so many in this multitude that they stepped on one another as they sought to get close to hear Jesus. B. Jesus warned the apostles primarily in the hearing of the multitude to beware of the corruptive leaven of the Pharisees which was hypocrisy. 1. Hypocrisy is a literary term used in connection with Greek drama and means play acting. Charles L. 4 4 3. As leaven the teachings and insincerity of the Pharisees would permeate all who were gullible, who did not guard against it. Luke 12:2,3, For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. I. Everything that is covered up will be shown, seen for what it is and whatever is said in darkness (privacy) will be heard in the light (publicly). A. The hypocrisy (insincerity) of the Pharisees, which they tried to cover up (hide, keep secret) would be clearly seen for what it was. B. This may also have been a warning to the apostles to be careful what they said in private to the Pharisees because it would be used against the apostles when it was to the advantage of the Pharisees to make it public. C. In the judgment day all the secrets of mankind will be revealed and exposed Corinthians 4:5, Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

5 5 2. Ephesians 5:13, But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Luke 12:4, 5, And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. I. Jesus sternly warned the apostles, his friends: A. don t fear the Pharisees who can only kill the body. B. fear God who can kill the body and then cast the soul into eternal hell (Gehenna). 1. Hebrews 9:27, And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: II. The soul is far more important than the body. Note 1: The apostles who kept Jesus commands were his friends while the Pharisees were rank enemies of the Lord. Note 2: The one to be feared is God, not the devil. Note 3: Gehenna (hell) is a reference to the valley of Hinnom, Jerusalem s garbage dump, which burned day and night. Luke 12:6, Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

6 6 I. God cares for everything including small things of seemingly little value. A. Five sparrows were sold for two (2) pence (English monetary unit), two cents (U.S. monetary unit). 1. Matthew 10:29, Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 2. If a person bought four sparrows, he received the fifth (5 th ) one at no extra cost. 3. Advertisements may say, Two (2) for the price of one (1) plus a dollar. Luke 12:7, But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. I. God knows and cares about everything. A. The very hairs of our heads are all numbered. B. Jesus said, Fear not. C. We are of more value than sparrows and God surely cares for us! II. Jesus was telling the apostles, Don t worry about the Pharisaical opposition. God will take care of you. Luke 12:8, 9, Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels

7 7 of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. I. In spite of the opposition of the Pharisees, the apostles were not to waver from confessing their faith in Jesus as the Christ. Why? A. Those who confess Jesus before men will be confessed before the angels of God. B. Those who deny Jesus before men will be denied before the angels of God. II. Confessing Christ in both easy and difficult situations is essential to salvation. Luke 12:10, And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost (Spirit) it shall not be forgiven. I. Speaking against Jesus, the Son of Man, is a forgivable sin. II. Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is an unforgivable sin. III. The Jews had denied the power of God as presented by the Old Testament prophets and Jesus Christ, but there was still hope in that the Holy Spirit was to be sent on Pentecost. After the Holy Spirit came there would be no other conduit of salvation and the rejection of the Holy Spirit left those who denied the ministry of the Holy Spirit without other means, hope of forgiveness, salvation. IV. Jesus spoke on this subject on other occasions:

Matthew 12:32, And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost (Spirit), it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. B. Mark 3:29, But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost (Spirit) hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Luke 12:11, 12, And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost (Spirit) shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. I. Jesus further assured the apostles that they were not to be anxious about their defense when they were brought by their enemies before synagogue courts, rulers and authorities. II. The Holy Spirit would teach them in that very hour of trial what they were to say.
