As early as 1679 LaSalle made hs frs rp no he Msssspp Valley and pushng on fnally made hs way no he land known o-day as Indana. I s ha he area around Sullvan Couny was grealy nfluenced by he French for he French obaned lands from he Indans by he Treay of Ths was Pon Coupee, a mle above he mouh of Busseron Creek-he souhwes corner of he presen Gll Townshp. So s o LaSalle we pay he honor of openng Indana o cvlzaon. Bu n 1763, wh he Treay of Pars he French relnqushed possesson of he lands o he Englsh. There was hen a ghenng down, Englsh oppresson grew and n 1775, he Revoluonary War. Our ancesors of Amerca and he Indana Terrory were deermned o hrow off he manle of persecuon and declare hemselves a free naon. The Amercan Freedom was no accden of naure, bu was gradually won by generaons of hard workng and advenurous people. Years passed and afer he Bale of Tppcanoe, General Harrson concluded a reay wh several Indan rbes. Shorly hereafer he James Ledgerwood famly came no Sullvan Couny. Then slowly no he wlderness came oher selers and wh he deermnaon o conquer hs wlderness. Sullvan soon began o grow rapdly. In he year 1842 we fnd n Sullvan abou four log cabns. The Couny records brough here n 1843 gave que an mpeus o he lle vllage. A wo-sory frame Cour House was bul on Washngon Sree and a wo-sory sold log jal and jaler's resdence on Sae Sree on Lo No. 66 on whch he presen brck jal sands. On a very cold January 4, 1843, a daugher, Mary J. was born o Hugh S. and Francs Orr. The frs chld born n hs own. Also n 1843 we fnd James Whcomb makng he frs polcal speech, snce he was a canddae for he Governorshp and he frs elecon was hen held n As a own grows, busness grows, and hese early merchans, John Brdwell, Maj. Isaac Sewar, Chrsson and Crowder and he Wesard Bros. kep lle mxed socks of dry goods, groceres, boos, shoes, has, hardware, clohng, and drugs. As he own grew we soon found many men buldng onesory frame resdences on Secon Sree. These wh a very few ohers, and a few eang and drnkng houses was Sullvan n On December 8, 1853 Sullvan was ncorporaed by he Ac of he Couny Commssoners, Wllam Beard, L ev Maxwell and Jacob Hoke. As for a caalogue of he own offcers, ha can no be gven, for he early own records are los or msplaced. The populaon a hs me was 350. One mgh have seen Mr. Sanders M. Howard, he frs Pos Maser, delveryng he mal and carryng n hs ha. N ear he cener of he orgnal plo of he own of Sullvan was he Cour House square, surrounded by an ron fence. In he cener of hs was he Cour House wh an elevaed foundaon of sold sone. The cupola on op of he Cour House was 120 fee n hegh, whch under favorable crcumsances could be seen from Merom, nne mles away. The E. and C. Ralroad, laer he E. and T. H. and now he C. & E. 1. was compleed from Evansvlle o Terre Haue n December They ran a mal ran Norh and Souh each day and a fregh ran Norh, Monday, Wednesday and Frday and Souh, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saurdays

As me passed on, her need for a bgger and beer buldng grew and hen a new school buldng, called he Cenral School was ereced n 1872 as a cos of $25,000. I was a hree sory buldng wh he capacy for 600 pupls wh Professor W. T. Crawford n charge. When he school year closed he Prncple and saff organzed for a erm of normal ranng. In a shor span of a few years many busnesses sared such as he frs planng mll, Propreors J. F. Hoke and A. B. Sansl he frs woolen facory The Merchans and Exchange flourng mll, The Marble and Grane works and wo carrage facores, E. J. C. Hlderbrand, Propreor of he one n he Souh and J. H. Wellng, n he Norh. Ros and Heny were shop propreors of he saonary and porable engnes, mll machnery, reapers, mowers and hreshers. In early hsory here were only wo Denss lsed Dr. W. T. Allson and Dr. Wllam Bucher. The Sullvan Couny Bank, he oldes nsuon of he knd n he couny, was suaed a he Souh-wes corner of he square. ( One of he mos remarkable men ha ever pub shed a paper n Sullvan Couny was John W. Osburn. He has been ermed ofen as he poneer edor of he Wabash Valley. In 1817 on a rp of abou wo monhs he wended hs way from New York Sae o he new sae of Indana. Afer havng charge of he "Wesern Sun", he frs paper publshed n Indana, and n 1823 ssung he frs number of he Terre Haue Regser, upon he breakng ou of he war of he Rebellon n 1861, Faher Osburn, as he was hen called, ook hs place n Sullvan, publshng a small war campagn paper called "Sars and Srpes". The "Sullvan Democra" was sared n Augus Then n 1867 he Sullvan Couny Unon was sared. I's offces were over he Sullvan Couny Bank. In 1883 Mr. U. Coulsen purchased he Unon afer had changed hands wo or hree mes. The Sullvan Tmes newspaper occuped he second floor of he Masonc Buldng. The Tmes was sared by George W. Basler as "The True Democracy", February 4,1878. One coal shaf opened near he E. and T. H. Ralroad Depo, by Howard Brohers. They reached wo vens of coal a 210 and 260 fee. So under he supernendence of he Rev. James R. Wllams a good frame church was ereced on he wes sde of he publc square. Pror o hs, he lle band had been worshppng n prvae homes. The Baps n 1854, Presbyeran n Augus 1857, he Chrsan Church n 1866 and n he years 1867 and 1868, under he supervson of Faher McCary, who was vsng Sullvan as a mssonary, a Caholc Church was sared. In 1917 he Frs World War called many Sullvanes and he own sacrfced many of her men and boys, bu hen came P eace.
