2 On May 25th, the Pleasant View Baptist School celebrated its 13th annual Comm e n c e m e n t exercises. We had 3 kindergarten graduates- Jillian Calloway, Tyler Thren, and Joseph Crawford. Also, our high school Pleasant View Educational Ministries Graduation Volume 1, Issue 4 graduates were Emily Wood (Valedictorian), Joseph Coyle (Salutatorian), Charity Voyles, and Jerrica Smith. We are very proud of these students and their accomplishments and anticipate seeing them serve the Lord in the years to come. In addition to the PVBS graduation, the Pleasant View Baptist College for Ladies held its first commencement exercises. The g r a d u a t e s i n c l u d e d E l i s a b e t h Dunn and Jessica Massengale. These young ladies have worked very diligently over the past few years to prepare themselves to serve the Lord in our church s ministries. Job Corps, established in 1964 by the U.S. Department of Labor, is a government-funded program designed to assist struggling young adults. According to the Office of Job Corps, their mission is to attract eligible young people, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further their education. Once enrolled in the program, students are provided with a place of residence, clothing, food, Great Onyx Job Corp transportation to and from the center, a living allowance, and health and dental care. The closest center to our church, Great Onyx Job Corps, is located right in the heart of Mammoth Cave. About 200 students are currently enrolled at this location. On the first Monday of every month, we have the opportunity to share the Gospel with these young people. A group of ten to fifteen people leave from the church around 5:00 P.M. in order to arrive at Job Corps in enough time to get everything set up and invite some students to the services. Approximately 8-10 young people faithfully attend the ser- vices and 2 seem to want help. O n e y o u n g man said he really appreciated our church taking the time to share the Gospel with him. He acknowledged that it costs the church money to send someone there every month and wanted to give money to help pay for gas. He only had $2 but gave what he had to show his appreciation. Bro. 3 The Pulpit Bro. Steve Blankenship Missionary to America s Juvenile Delinquents Bro. Steve Blankenship and his family have been working as missionaries to America s Troubled Teens for 20 years. Over the years, the Lord has broadened the ministry to help more specific areas. Two radio broadcasts greatly help young people in their own communities. Teen Issues is a 5 minute, daily radio broadcast and Truth For Teens is a 15 minute Saturday broadcast. These programs are heard on about 30 Radio Stations, as well as internet radio. The Marvelous Grace Girls Academy was started in 2008 to help families of troubled teens and children. This has been a tremendous help in keeping girls from heading to juvenile delinquent facilities. Over 70 children and teens have been saved and families strengthened over these years. The Marvelous Grace Girls Academy, however, does not receive funding from any sources other than parents, Christians, and churches. There are currently 23 girls attending the academy and 14 of them have no financial support coming in for them. It would greatly help this ministry if our church and its members would consider offering consistent support. They ask that our church pray for the children s souls. Many of the children have lost parents and many need protection from the influences around them. Bro. Blankenship also asks that we pray for more Juvenile Delinquent Facilities to open for more services. The receptiveness of the Gospel in this ministry is great. Bro. Bobby Barnes Evangelist to Churches in America Brother Bobby Barnes s ministry works to encourage churches across America and to reach the lost. Bro. Barnes greatly enjoys preaching to the lost but he and his ministry need prayer. He asks for prayers for traveling mercies and prayer for his wife s health while he is on the road. One of the greatest requests, however, would be that God would help them reach the lost. They too need financial help to keep their ministry moving. Bro. Barnes preaches in a lot of small churches. It seems that when one church starts supporting the ministry, another c h u r c h d r o p s 3 their support. Receptiveness to the Word of God varies from church to church. Some churches respond well and others do not. In Bro. Barnes s words, This wavering often causes me to wander what I am doing there. But he also says, Thank the Lord there will always be one that will tell you the Lord has helped them. I have been on the road now for eighteen wonderful years, and I praise God for the opportunity to serve Him in this ministry.

4 Bob Hill- Navy, , Senior Chief Petty Officer Volume 1, Issue 4 Member Bob s favorite memory was his tour of duty in Guam with Donna, Sarah, Carl, and Alex. He was promoted to Senior Chief there and became the Command Senior Chief as the senior enlisted man at his command. Bob enjoyed his duty a lot and felt that he was really making a valuable contribution to our nation. However, he would not recommend anyone leave PVBC to go serve unless they really felt strongly about serving. David Thren- Army, and 2009, Sergeant (E-5) David s favorite memory of being in the Army revolves around the fact that he came from a long line of military service members in his family, including the following: his father, Stephen Thren; his uncles, Stanly Thren (Vietnam War) and Clayton Garrett (Korean War); his grandfathers Kenneth Martin (WWII Pacific) and Kenneth McConnell (WWII Philippines); and others (mentioned on last page) Billy Richards- Army, 4 years, Sergeant His favorite memories include time in the field with his team and traveling to South Korea. Raymond Calloway- Army, present, Specialist E-4 Raymond sadly admits he was not right with God when he left for the Army but his years at the church and knowing that the church was praying for him made him realize how much he needed the church. After that, any time he s been asked what he misses most while away, it has been his church and his family. Jared Voyles- Army, 2010-present, Corporal Jared s favorite memory of being in the army was getting out of the plane at Ft Campbell after his first tour. He says the letters and prayers from the kids in the school are a real encouragement. We all sit around and read them out loud little kids are so funny. 4

5 The Pulpit Memoirs Ray Jenkins- Army, , Specialist, E-4 Ray traveled many places while in the army- Italy, Istanbul, Turkey, Greece, Sardinia, Great Britain, Germany, and other places. While training in England, Ray had the opportunity to see Stonehenge and eat a traditional English meal in a countryside village. His least favorite memory in the army was learning that his grandfather passed away and not being able to make it home for the funeral. Kenneth Calloway- Army, 1997-present, Sergeant First Class Kenneth s favorite memory of being in the military was seeing his wife, kids, and church family at the airport when he came home from Afghanistan. Kenneth especially appreciates the prayers for him while he was in Afghanistan and the care packages that he said made life much more bearable. Paul Thren- Army Bill Carr- Air Force, , Senior Airman Bill s least favorite memory of the Air Force was when he was leading a communications repair crew onto a Titan II missile complex and was given the wrong set of codes to gain access to the complex. He wound up with a Security Policeman with the muzzle of his M16 crammed up Bill s nose while the crews identifications were being verified. Is there not a cause?" As we honor those who have sacrificed to defend our country, I thought it fitting to use this verse. The Apostle Paul, in his Epistles to various churches, has much to say about spiritual warfare. He address the enemy that we fight, the weapons of our warfare, the amour used for our defense, the hardship of the soldier, and the endurance needed if one is to rejoice in victory. So much could be expounded from each of these themes. As we look at a soldier in the battle of the Lord and the warfare in which he must engage, we understand that it involves the spiritual man, the mental man, and the physical man. Let's take a look at the mental man for just a moment. Why are men willing to fight? Why would they risk their lives and leave their families? What drives them? Where does this determination come from? I believe David answers all of these questions in the last phrase of our verse. Is there not a cause? The cause that pushed David to walk down in the valley of Elul and face the giant Goliath should be the same reason we stand and fight the fight of faith as the people of God. What was his cause? 1. His Lord- The enemy had blas- phemed the name of the God of Israel- the God that David worshipped and adored, the One with Whom he had fellowshipped and sang about, the One Who had delivered him from the lion and the bear. He had walked with Him, known His presence and experienced His blessings. When the enemy had questioned the integrity of his Lord, an indignation rose up within David that drove him to battle. 2. His Love- Goliath was an enemy to everything that David loved. He loved the House of God, the Word of God, and the People of God. The enemy would destroy it all if he could. Who would rise up and protect the things he loved? Would he loose them in a moment of time? NO! He loved them too much to surrender them to the Devil and the world. He would fight no matter the odds. He loved them and would do his all to defend them. 3. His Loyalty- Loyalty is a forgotten word in the lives of Christians. Compromise is the norm. Worldliness is accepted. Carnality is the way of life. "Give in, adapt, capitulate, yield to us." That s what the enemy cries, as did Goliath. It appears that the rulers like Saul and the seasoned veterans like David's brothers are just about to raise the flag of surrender and give up overwhelmed 6 by fear. Is there a D a v i d a n y - w h e r e? Is there someone with a CAUSE, a purpose in which to believe, a reason to fight- just one man that will stand in the gap and be loyal and true? 4. His Liberty- Goliath represented bondage. The Philistines were a type of the flesh. The world desires to dominate you. This young man said, "I will not be ruled by sin. I ve known freedom from the world's oppression and I will not go back into slavery. I am out-numbered, out-sized, and out-experience; but don t count me OUT! My CAUSE out-numbers theirs. It's bigger, and it's won more victories than all the armies of the world combined." It s the CAUSE OF CHRIST. It's spiritual freedom- liberty in the Lord, loosed from the chains of sin. Men fight when they have established in their mind that they have a CAUSE. Do you have one? Are you in the trenches with your comrades in the heat of the battle? Or are you on the hillside with Saul and the others? The Battle is the Lord s. The CAUSE must be yours.

7 The Pulpit Harry Broderick, Jr Harry Cone Broderick was born on June 5, 1922 in Washington, DC. He enlisted in the United States Navy as an Aviation Support Equipment Technician a little more than a year before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was part of a group of Americans known as the Greatest Generation. This group of men built a steel wall of ships and planes between their loved ones and the aggressor and with their lives protected the freedom that we enjoy each and every day. This group of fathers, sons, and brothers stood against the evil that Mussolini, Hitler, and Hirohito sought to perpetuate on America and the rest of the world. Some of Harry s Awards In Loving Memory include: The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, The China Service Medal, and many others. While in the Navy, Harry held multiple Naval ratings. Harry was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer on 16 May This is the most honorable rank within the U.S. Navy rank structure. I was not privileged to know Harry during his time of service to our country. When we first met, he was much older and feebler. We compared hip replacement surgery stories and talked of our service to our country, but we had another thing in common. Just a couple of years ago, I remember Harry walking into the gym and proclaiming to everyone that he had just gotten saved. And early Sunday morning, April 28, 2013, Harry embarked on a journey unlike any other he had been on before. He stepped aboard his final vessel, minus the limp, minus the pain, and breathed his first breath of air without struggle. Although Harry had been on many voyages to the farthest corners of the earth, that took weeks and even months of travel, this voyage was quite different, because according to II Corinthians 5:8, the very moment that he was absent, he was present. - written by Kenneth Calloway Steven Richard Henry II Steven R. (Buster) Henry II, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 1, He was born in Owensboro on February 17, 1983 to Steve and Vicki Henry. Buss, as his Papaw Mitchell called him, graduated from Pleasant View Baptist School in 2002 with high honors. He received the Christian Character Award for his Christ-like attitude, Christian conduct, good grades, and respectful behavior. As one church member said recently, Buster was real. Buster went on to get a Criminal Justice Degree from OCTC, where he was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. He attended Brescia University for two years to work on his accounting degree. He maintained a 4.0 grade point average and was on the Dean s List. In 2009, Buster joined the Army Reserves. He did Basic Training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. He then completed AIT training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and was selected to the Commandants List by achiev- ing the top 7 ten percent academic average on all graded exams and hands-on events during Advanced Individual Training. He was awarded the Diploma for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Specialist. Buster worked for Securitas Security Service at the Coleman Station. Buster loved his Church family. He was a faithful and Godly young man, loved by all. His Church was his life. He played the guitar and piano for the Lord in the church services, tent meetings, and other special services. He faithfully spent time in his Bible and was a blessing to the church.
