5 Clara J. Ester, a native of Memphis, TN, is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis. She has a B.A.degree in Elementary Education. When she was a student in college the sanitation strike, the school boycott and the hospital strike were major concerns in the city. She became a youth representative for these causes. She was so involved with the sanitation strike that it put her in places that literally changed her whole life. Clara was at the Lorraine Motel when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated and ran to his side after the fatal shooting. She moved to Mobile, AL, in February 1970 to work at Dumas Wesley Community Center as a neighborhood organizer and a youth worker. She later assumed the roles of Program Director, Associate Director and retired December 2006 as the Executive Director. She's a member of Toulminville-Warren Street United Methodist Church where she has held positions as Lay Leader, Class Leader, Servant Leader, and chair of the Staff-Parish Relations committee, Chair of the Mature Adult Ministries, Usher, and Altar Guild member. Currently, she serves as a member of the Mass choir and the United Methodist Women. She served on the conference level of the United Methodist Church on the Board of Pensions and Health, served on the Bishop's Task Force on Children and Poverty, chaired the Religion & Race Committee, served as United Methodist Women conference coordinator of Social Action and served on the District Clergy/Laity Academy. Currently, she serves as the District Lay Leader in Mobile, serves as a Director and National Vice President of United Methodist Women, serves on the Communities of Transformation committee, the conference board of Laity and the Conference Committee on Episcopacy. She was elected as a delegate to the 2012 Jurisdictional Conference of the United Methodist Church and elected as a delegate to the 2016 General and Jurisdictional conference. She serves on the Alabama-West Florida Conference Core team. She serves on the Charter for Racial Justice team for the United Methodist Women. In 1986, she was commissioned as a deaconess of the United Methodist Church. She presently serves on the Board of the National Association of Deaconess and Home Missioners. She has served on many boards and agencies in Mobile. She was one of the founding members of Habitat for Humanities of Mobile and People United to Advance the Dream. She served on the Quality Assurance Board for the Department of Human Resources, was a member of Mobile United, a graduate of Leadership Mobile and Leadership Alabama. Clara's interest in social welfare and justice was fueled by her early relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She was very active in the Civil Rights struggle in Memphis, TN. and worked with several other projects throughout the south. She was one of the youth organizers for the Second Poor People 's Campaigns. Clara has one son, Reginald.

6 Frances Perry Scholarship The Frances Perry Scholarship is a scholarship fund of the United Methodist Women in Mississippi. The fund was set up in 1978 by Mr. E.V. Perry to honor his wife, Mrs. Frances Perry of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, a past president of the former Mississippi Conference. It was originally set up for women going into the mission field of the Methodist Church. The program has evolved through the years with donations from United Methodist Women across the state. Scholarships up to $1,500 are now available for women and men in the junior, senior and graduate years of college who are interested in working in projects or institutions of the United Methodist Church. It is renewable for three additional years if a grade point average of 3.0 is maintained at an approved institution. The chairperson and members of the Frances Perry Scholarship Committee are appointed by the UMW Conference President. The United Methodist Women of Mississippi are asked to donate at least $4 per member to keep the scholarship program going beyond the original amount donated. Your donations are relied upon to keep the scholarship fund going. God s blessings have abounded and the fund has been able to keep up with the need because of the generosity of UMW. Please continue to send in your donations to help us provide scholarships to pastors in the Mississippi Conference. Thanks for your continued support, Cindy Long, 2019 Chairperson Frances Perry Scholarship Committee 2019 Dorothy Carter (4), Conference President Maudie Benton (5) Annie Cassidy (5), Conference Treasurer Diane Reynolds (5), Conference Secretary Elaine Tinsley (4) Kathleen Smith (4)

13 Candle Burning is our 36 th year for the Mississippi Conference to observe Candle Burning. Contributions to Candle Burning are considered second mile giving to support mission programs for women, children and youth that are sponsored by United Methodist Women. This second mile giving is used to help others while at the same time showing our love for persons in our lives. The Candle Burning Booklet that is available at Annual Meeting in October will list all the names that have been honored or memorialized as well as the donors. Mission Minute Persons is a very distinctive category. The contributions to this category equal the amount of the cost of one minute in mission to support programs for women, children and youth in the United States and around the world. Mission Minute Persons will receive a special pin and a certificate. Members contributing can choose a category that best recognizes the individual they want to honor or memorialize. The categories: In Honor of Individuals and In Memory of Loved Ones are meaningful ways to recognize persons who have played important roles in our lives. In Honor of Children and In Memory of Children give our members an opportunity to show love for precious children in our lives. The amount for the Mission Minute Person category this year is $ All other categories can be from $5.00 to any larger amount, and this should be prayerfully considered. Please consider doing this throughout the year (not just close to the deadline, August 1, 2019). Those received by August 1 will be included in the Candle Burning booklet distributed at Annual Meeting in Hattiesburg, October 4-5. Last year our United Methodist Women Mississippi Conference gave a total of $12, through Candle Burning. Praise God!! During this our 150th year, wouldn t it be great to double that?
