Reading and adopting minutes. 15. Adjournment. PROCEEDNGS The 137th annual session of Old Mount Zion Association of Free Will Baptists met in regular session on August 10, 1978 at 7:30 P.M. The evening service opened with congregational singing conducted by Bro. Theo Johnson, Leona Bagwell pianist. The Moderator, Elder Eldon Bagwell, called the body to order by reading Hosea Chapter 10: Prayer by Elder Darwin Kelton. Elder Daniel Phillips was introduced to deliver the ntroductory Message. Bro. Phillips offers prayer following the reading of Job 23:3 and St. John 14:8-12. During the concourse of the message he continues to read from St. John, 1:43-44; 6:1-6; 12:20-29 and 13: General Theme, "f Could See God?"... "- - - shew us the Father, and it sufficieth us." An invitation was given to those who might have special needs from the Father. Again, Bro. Phillips offers prayer for all. Church letters were called for, read and all regularly elected delegates, ordained ministers and deacons were given the right hand of fellowship by the moderator and seated as the body sang, "Heavens Jubilee." Twenty-five churches responded with letters, delegates one or both. Second Fayetteville did not represent at this time. Appointment of Committee on Committees: Elders David Todd, Dale Jordan, Anthony Lane, Ernest Johnson and Bruce Phillips. Elder Darwin Kelton was elected to preach the 11 oclock message on Friday morning. Motion carried to adjourn until 9:30 A.M. Friday. Benediction: Bro. Alfred Ashley.

3 FRDAY MORNNG SESSON. Congregational singing was conducted by Bro. Orvil Clark, Georgia Phillips, pianist. Songs, "Victory n Jesus," and "Heavens Jubilee." Scripture reading, Romans 13:11-14 by moderator; prayer by Elder David Joslin. Delegates who were absent on Thursday night were seated at this time. Motion moved that we table the letter from White Oak Free Will Baptist Church until we receive further information about their re-organization. White Oak failed to furnish a petitioning letter, also the details of their organization. 4 RADO PROGRAM REPORT given by Elder Bobby Shepherd. Bro. Bobby Shepherd was re-elected by acclamation as Radio Pastor and given a rising vote of thanks for his work. NEWS LETTER REPORT was given by the editor, Elder Bobby Shepherd. Motion carried to receive the News Letter Report. Elder Bobby Shepherd resigns as Editor of News Letter. Elder Daniel Phillips nominated and elected as Editor of News Letter. Sister Virginia G. Johnson was nominated and elected as Co-Editor of News Letter. Motion carried to dismiss business until1:30 P.M. Benediction: Bro. Kenneth Lynch. FRDAY,ll OCLOCK SERVCE Services opened with congregational singing conducted by Elder Cecil Garrison; Mable Phillips at the piano. Prayer requests were made by many. Elders and delegates came to the altar to offer their prayer petitions. Special song, "How Great Thou Art," by Jeannie Howell. Moderator, Bro. Bagwell, introduces Elder Darwin Kelton to deliver the message. Bro. Kelton reads from Matt. 5:43-48; 18:3-4; 5:17-20; 23:37; Heb. 10:25; John 3:14a; Prov. 3:9 and various other scriptures to emphasize the theme... "Outlive The World," "Outlove The World," and "Outgive The World." An invitation was given to those who had special needs to bring them to the Lord. Announced: Elder Terry Mudd to preach Friday night, Eld. Dennis Artman, alternate. Elder Noel Easterling to preach Saturday morning with Elder Clarence Tice taking the first part of the service. Benediction: Bro. Carl Johnson. FRDAY AFTERNOON SESSON Congregational singing conducted by Bro. Lowell Bradley, Joyce Mason pianist. Scripture lesson: Eph. 5:14-20 by moderator; prayer, Elder Luther Jones. Elder David Joslin was introduced as moderator. He gave a report on the States finances of Arkansas Free Will Baptists. Sister Pearl Archer was nominated and elected as Clerk-Treasurer of the Radio Program. EXAMNNG COUNCL REPORT was given by Elder Clyde Johnson; motion carried to receive the report. Motion carried to receive the report of the Sunday School Committee and to discharge the Committee. Motion carried to receive the report on Union of Churches and to discharge the Committee. HOME MSSONS BOARD REPORT was given by Bro. Lowell Bradley. Motion carried to receive the Home Missions Board report. EXECUTVE BOARD REPORT was given by Bro. James Spears. 5 YOUTH CAMP BOARD REPORT was given by Bro. Ernest Johnson. Motion carried to receive the report. Motion carried to receive the report on Temperance and discharge the committee. Motion carried to receive a partial report on Obituaries and retain the committee. Motion carried to receive the report on the Womens Auxiliary. Motion carried to bring Resolution No. 1 to the floor for discussion. Resolution No. 1 adopted. Trustees elected, by acclamation, to replace the Building Committee, as follows: Elders Noel Easterling, 5-year term; Cecil Garrison, 4-year term; Clyde Johnson, 3-year term; David Todd, 2-year term; Roy Edgmon, 1-year term.. Motion carried to receive a partial report on Finance and retain the committee. Motion carried to adjourn until 9:30 A.M. Saturaday. Benediction: Elder Bruce Phillips. FRDAY NGHT SERVCE Service opened with congregational singing, directed by Elder Claude Hendrix; Donna Watson at the piano. Opening prayer led by Elder Arthur Lee Galloway. Special singing: "After Calvary" by Jesse and Donna Carothers. "Where Could Go But To The Lord?" by Elder Raymond Hunton. "m Willing, Lord," by Georgia Phillips. Moderator Eldon Bagwell led the congregation in singing "When We All Get To Heaven" as an offering was taken for the youth camo water heater fund. Leona Bagwell was at the piano. The offering received was $ Elder Dale Jordan led in prayer. Elder Terry Mudd brought the evening message on "Are You Worthy?" using Ephesians 6:10-17 and Galatians 6:6-8 as his text. An altar call was given at the close of his message. The Moderator then called on the 23 ordained ministers present to come forward and help with the breaking of bread for the communion service. Elder Clarence Tice and Elder Noel Easterling asked the blessing on the communion which was served by eight ordained deacons. A large number took part in the feet washing service which followed; there was much rejoicing. The service was dismissed with an old-time handshake as the Moderator led the congregation in singing "f We Never Meet Again" and other old hymns. Wilma Phillips was at the piano. SATURDAY MORNNG SESSON The business session opened with Bro. Cecil Garrison leading the singing and Rocky Bell at the piano. Scripture reading, Cor. 7:29a and Peter 4:7; prayer, Elder Sammie Lane. -3-

6 Motion carried that the Clerk should contact the New Sulphur Church and receive their obituaries as they didnt include them with their letter. Elder J. A. Green and wife of Union Association were recognized, and Bro. Green seated as a delegate. Motion carried to have 1,200 Minutes printed. Motion carried to have the Minutes printed commercially. Motion carried to receive the final report of the Obituary Committee and to discharge the Committee. Motion carried to receive the Finance report and discharge the Committee. Motion carried to print the obituary of Bro. Ed Smith. t should have been in the 1977 Minutes - an oversight. MEMORAL SERVCE [Saturday - 11:00 A.M.] Congregational singing conducted by Elder Tommie Day, Becky Hendrix, pianist. Song, " Feel Like Traveling On." Special in song, "Happy Journey," by Bro. Darwin Kelton. Special, "We Shall Meet Some Day," Wanda Hendrix. Prayer, Elder Anthony Lane. Elder Clarence Tice is introduced as the first speaker. Scripture used, Thes. 4: After a few comments he reads the names of deceased members of Old Mt. Zion Association. The morning message was delivered by Elder Noel Easterling. Scripture lesson: Tim. 4:6-8; Ps. 116:15 and Rev. 22:17. The morning service closed with an invitation to the unsaved, also those with special needs. Benediction: Elder James Spears. SATURDAY AFTERNOON SESSON The body came together with singing, Elder Darwin Kelton directing; Georgia Phillips at the piano. Scripture reading by Moderator, Heb. 4;11-16; prayer, Elder David Watson. Motion carried that the Clerk should write for the obituary of Elder Millard Davis so that it may be printed in the Minute Book. Sister Patsy Vanhook, Missionary to France, gave a short talk concerning her work there; she also commented on the work of other missionaries and the present problems concerning those in Japan. Sister Patsy requested that special prayers be made that these needs might be met. Motion carried to accept the report of Non-Represented Churches and discharge the Committee. ARKANSAS STATE ASSOCATON: Delegates elected: Sisters Juanita Shepherd, Hazel Easterling, Mary Kelton and Patsy Vanhook. UNON ASSOCATON DELEGATES: Bros. Roy Edgmon, Noel Easterling, Luther Jones; Cecil Garrison, Alternate. -4-

7 Motion carried to dismiss the Committee on Committees. Motion carried that we accept the report of the Resolution Committee and retain the Committee. Resolution No. 2 adopted. Resolution No. 3 adopted. Motion carried to dismiss the Divine Service Committee. Motion carried that a Divine Service Committee be nominated for the 1979 Mount Zion Association when convened. Namely: Elder Tommie Day, Chairman, and Bros. Roy Edgmon, Noel Self, William McGuire and James Harrison. Loren Collins nominated and elected to preach the ntroductory Message on Thursday night before the second Sunday in August, 1979; Bro. Luther Jones as alternate. Motion carried to discharge the Resolution Committee. Motion carried to accept the minutes without being read. Motion carried to dismiss this session of the Association until 7:30 Thursday night before the second Sunday in August, Benediction: Bro. Carl Johnson. SATURDAY NGHT SERVCE By "Our Youth" Elder Danny Phillips, Youth Camp Board Member, had charge of the Old Mt. Zion Association Youth Service on Saturday night. The service was opened by congregational singing, directed by Steve Reeves with LaWanda Day at the piano. We praise God for the good attendance by our youth and for the nine churches that participated in the program. Representing the Greenland Memorial Chapel Church, Jesse and Donna Carothers sang "He Did t All For Me," and Steve Cobb sang "Youre Not The Lone Ranger." The Phillips Chapel Youth Choir, under the direction of Sharon Bowerman and Richard Van hook at the piano, sang "Hey, m A Believer Now" and "Greater s He That s n Me." Four girls from the Clifty Chapel church sang "Broken Pieces." The youth were divided into six groups with Elders James Spears, Ernest Johnson, Danny Phillips, Loy Counts, Lonny Burks and Dennis Artman, and Bro. Noel Self assisting as discussion leaders on the "Fruits of the Spirit." From the Berryville Church, Pastor Darwin Kelton, his wife Mary, and sons, Mark and Scott, presented the gospel in testimony, music and song to the adults present. Following the discussions, the youth presented charades on Bible stories depicting the "Fruits of the Spirit" which proved to be both comical and interesting to decipher. The Reeves Brothers from the Huntsville Church, sang "ll Sail Away Home." -5-

8 Ray and LaW anda Day from the Victory Church sang "What A Difference Jesus Makes." A youth group from Pilgrims Rest Church sang "Good News" and "Thou Art A Wonderful God." Kayla Williams, Louise and Lisa Johnson from the Fayetteville First Church, sang "The Greatest Gift." Georgia Phillips from the Mt. Zion Church sang "Psalms 19." Prayer was led by Elder Danny Phillips. The Kelton Family then sang "The Family of God" and "m Gettin Ready." Elder Darwin Kelton brought the evening message on "Ho, Every One... " using saiah 55:la, 3, 6-7, as his text. Several came to the altar for prayer when he gave an invitation to the lost and those with special needs.. Zion Association met on the following dates: November 5, 1977, March 12 and 19, and May 6 and 19, The purpose of these meetings was in behalf of the Mission Churches at Durham and Harrison, Arkansas. As of present, there is nothing fully developed in either of these places. We also met August 6, 1978 at Phillips Chapel Church with all members present. Bro. Doyle Boyd introduced to us a Retirement Plan for all ministers of the Association. Another meeting for all ministers is planned for a later date. 10 The Home Mission Board met three times in regular session and six called meetings. During the past year, we helped organize the Bentonville Free Will Baptist Church. Together with the Executive Board, we met with Bro. Jerry Paschal, pastor of the Durham Mission Church, concerning a request he made for help from the Old Mt. Zion Association to secure a loan to complete the church building there. The Harrison Mission is not meeting now. They were forced to move and were unable to find a place to have services. Eureka Springs Elder Clyde Johnson, Chairman Elder Noel Easterling Elder Bruce Phillips "NEWSLETTER" REPORT August, 1977 to August, 1978 Publishing Expenses... $1, Repair of Offset Press Paid on new typewriter Total Expenses.... $ Contributions Received... $ The "Old Mount Zion Newsletter" is still being published bi-monthly (six issues a year) with 750 copies printed of each issue or 4,500 copies annually. Due to problems with the offset press, it was necessary to have two issues of the "Newsletter" done by professional printers. This increased the average cost to almost 26c per copy during the past year. The $54.00 balance owed the "Newsletter" on the printing press was paid in May, 1978, and the press has been repaired.. The "Newsletter" staff published the 1977 Association Minutes at a cost of $ and payment of $ was received from the Association Minutes Fund. A new typewriter was purchased for use in -8-

11 typing the Minutes with a contribution of $ from the Association Minutes Fund. During the year from August 6, 1977 through August 6, 1978, a total of $ was received in special offerings at the Christmas Banquet and Chili and Stew Supper. The money that was disbursed through the District was as follows: Emphasis Month - $98.41; 1977 District Retreat Speaker, Genelle Scott - $100.00; Free Will Baptist Foreign Missions - $589.36; Free Will Baptist State Missions - $50.00; Free Will Baptist Childrens Home - $639.00; Membership Dues- $ Money sent directly from the local auxiliaries was as follows: Patsy Vanhook Newsletter - $105.00; Free Will Baptist Childrens Home - $100.00; Missionary Provision Closet - $ Nancy Webb, President DeLane McCoy, Treasurer -9-

12 REPORT OF NEW COMMTEES TEMPERANCE We, your Committee on Temperance, believe we should be temperate in all things: in our daily lives and also in our spiritual lives. "But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." Gal. 5:22-23; also Peter 2:4-7. Susie Davis, Chairwoman SUNDAY SCHOOLS We, your Committee on Sunday Schools, believe the Holy Word of God was inspired; and as such, parents should prepare their children for Sunday School. Timothy 2:15 states, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Gods word is the Christians guidebook and without its study we cannot grow spiritually. "And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with yourown hands, as we commanded you." Thes. 4:11. Theo Johnson, Chairman UNON OF CHURCHES We, your Committee on Union of Churches, submit the following: So far as we know, our churches are all in one accord. n Ps. 133:1-3 the Psalmist David said, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" ".. For there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life forevermore." Ps. 133:3b. Zion Association have made their annual report; which, brings to mind the scripture, "But to do good and to communicate forget not; for with such sacrifice God is well pleased." Heb. 13:16. Also Heb. 10:25, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." We recommend that the men who now serve as the Building Committee be elected as a Board of Trustees. Be it further recommended that the Board of Trustees consist of five members - one to be chosen each year; and, following the same procedure as the other elected standing boards. Resolution No.2- We recommend that the Association appoint a Divine Service Committee consisting of a chairman who is an ordained minister acquainted with the other ministers of the Association that -11-

14 a new committee be elected annually;... that the chosen committee submit the names of the chosen preachers and their alternates for the following year before the close of the Association; we further recommend that the Committee be retained from one Association to the next.. Resolution No.3- We recommend that the Association show their appreciation for the fine food prepared by the ladies by giving them a rising vote of thanks. Lonny Burks, Chairman RESOLUTONS: [Permanently Printed] Resolution No. 1: Be it resolved that the Association set aside Saturday night of the conference each year for the Youth of our Churches to make their reports concerning their work and to be in charge of the worship service for that night, with privilege of selecting a speaker or speakers for that service. No. 2 - That attention be called to Article 3 of the Constitution of this Association, as terms of receiving members into. the local church as, namely: (1) profession of faith; (2) by letter or recommendation; (3) by restoration; (4) by denominational choice. He was born December 13, 1931, the son of Robert M. and Frona Addington Black. He was a building contractor and served with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Black was a charter member of the original Buckeye Free Will Baptist Church, and was a faithful worker as long as health permitted. He also wrote songs which he enjoyed singing. One he loved dearly was "So Much Joy n Knowing Christ." Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Allie) Johnson; two granddaughters, Miss Virginia Johnson, and Mrs. Rick (DeLane) McCoy; and two great-granddaughters, all of Fayettteville. Funeral services were held February 1, 1978 at Brashears Chapel in Huntsville with Rev. Noel Easterling and Rev. Ernest Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Kingston Cemetery. -21-

We, therefore, enter into covenant as members of this church, and as Christians, that we will watch over each other in love, sharing together each others joys and sorrows; that we will not forsake the assemblying of ourselves together, nor omit the great duty of prayer for ourselves and others; that by Divine assistance we will endeavor to bring up those under our care in the nurture and admonition of the Lord; that in all things we will strive to exemplify our profession by a corresponding practice, to abstain from all sinful conformity to the world, to be just in our dealings, faithful in our agreements, and exemplary in all our deportment; that we will abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating liquor as beverage; that we will contribute cheerfully according to our ability, to the support of the ministry, the expense of the church, the relief of the poor and the general spread of the Gospel.. n keeping this solemn covenant, may we ever enjoy the blessings and presence of the Great Head of the church, which is Jesus Christ the Saviour. RULES OF ORDER 1. At every sitting of the Association, business shall be opened and concluded by prayer by the Moderator or whomsoever he may request. 2. Ministers, deacons and delegates of Old Mt. Zion Assn. when present are invited to seats, allowed to take part in debates on all subjects, and to vote. Visiting ministers, deacons and delegates are invited to seats, allowed to take part in debates on all subjects, but not to vote. 3. Those who speak shall arise and address the Moderator. Personal reflections shall be avoided in all debates. 4. No motion shall be discussed without a second. 5. When a motion has been made and seconded, and a member opposes its discussion, the Moderator shall put the question, "Shall it be discussed?" f negative, the question shall be dismissed. 6. f any proposition or motion under debate contains two or more points, it shall be divided at the request of any member, and the vote taken separately., 7. 25 8. No one shall speak more than twice on the same subject without special leave of the Moderator. 9. All questions shall be decided by a majority vote of all members present. 10. No member shall absent himself without special leave of the Moderator. 11. Minutes shall be leisurely read and corrected if necessary before the close of the Association. 12. At all future sessions of the Association, arrangements shall be made to insure two sermons, or other devotional exercises equivalent thereto, during each day of the session, and the chair shall announce just before adjournment, who shall preach. 13. These Rules of Order shall be distinctly read from the chair immediately after the organization of the Association. 14. Alterations may be made in these rules at any regular session of the Association. CONSTTUTON From long experience, we, the members of the Church of God (denominated Free Will Baptists) being regularly baptized upon profession of our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and being convinced of the necessity of a combination of churches to perpetuate a union among us, and to preserve and maintain correspondence with each other, do therefore ordain this Constitution for our better Church government. Art. 1. Membership - This Association shall be composed of members chosen by the different churches of our union, not exceeding three messengers from each church, and upon producing letters, they shall be entitled to seats. All regularly ordained ministers and deacons of this Association becoming properly credentialed and in full fellowship and good standing in the church of which they are members, shall be entitled to seats as a delegate, when present, by virtue of their office. Art. 2. Name - The members thus chosen and assembled with the ministers and deacons, to be denominated the Old Mt. Zion Association of Free Will Baptists being composed of the several churches of our union, the Association having no power over the churches reserving right of withdrawing from any church becoming disorderly. Art. 3. Letters - Letters from the different churches representing are to express their number in fellowship including the names and -23-

26 ..,,,, il i, addresses of ordained and licensed ministers, the number of members received upon profession of faith, by letter of recommendation, by restoration or denominational choice; the number of members dismissed by letter, excluded, and those having died since last Association. Churches, in sending their letters, may send obituaries of any one who died during the year, that we may keep up the memorial to our dead. Art. 4. Dismissing Members - Our churches upon granting letters of dismission to any of its members shall require a notice from the church receiving said letter that it has been received..,, Art. 5. Officers - The Association to have a Moderator, and an Assistant Moderator, Clerk-Treasurer, and an Assistant Clerk Treasurer, elected annually for a term of one year by the suffrage, and an executive committee or five, one member chosen each year for a term of five years, and that each member be an Ordained Minister in good standing of the Old Mt. Zion Association, who shall have the authority to transact any business transactions of. the Association between sessions.. of the Association and make a report to the Association annually. c Art. 6. New Churches - Newly organized churches may be admitted to the Association, which are to petition by letter and delegates, and if, upon examination, they are found to be orthodox and orderly, they may be received into the Association, the Moderator giving the right hand of fellowship. Art. 7. Questions - No questions from any church shall come under consideration of the Association unless it has been first considered in its own church. Art. 8. Motions - Every motion made and seconded shall come under the consideration of the Association, except it be withdrawn by the member who made it. Art. 9. Minutes - The Association is to endeavor to furnish the churches the minutes of the Association in proportion to the amount paid by each church, the distribution to be made at the discretion of the Association. Art. 10. Clerk - t shall be the duty of the Clerk to keep a regular file of the minutes of the Association in a book to be kept by the Association for that purpose. Art. 11. Signatures - The minutes of the Association shall be read and corrected, if needed, and signed by the Moderator and Clerk before the close of the Association. -24-

27 Art. 12. Amendments - Amendments of this Constitution may be made, when necessary, by a two-thirds vote of the members present at any regular session. Art. 13. Non-Attendance - The Association, in case of failure of any church to attend, shall inquire into the case: Old Mt. Zion Association of Art. 14. Ordination of Ministers - Free Will Baptists accepts the wording of the Epistles Tim. 3:1-7, and Titus 1:6-9 as authoritative for guidelines to Ordaining of Ministers. When a Church member acknowledges their call to the Ministry they should be licensed by the Church of which they are a member for the period of one year prior to Ordination: Or, until they have proved themselves to the Church. When the member has proven Himself the Church should call for His Ordination. That all Churches of Old Mt. Zion Association, in all Ordination services of Ministers, comply strictly with the rules and regulations laid down by the Free Will Baptist denominations. Said procedure. to be conducted by an Examining Council of three orthodox Free Will Baptist Ministers of this Association to be chosen by the Association. "ARTCLES OF FATH 1. God - We believe in one true and living Triune God; composed of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal in divine Essence, Purpose, Power and Glory. The Fall of Man - We believe that God created man good, gave a just law by which he should be governed, with the promise of reward for faithfulness and with penalties of punishment for disobedience. Gave man power of free moral agency to choose the right and reject the wrong. But our first parents heeded the voice of the great enemy of souls, voluntarily transgressed the law of God, fell with their posterity under the just penalty of the same, and were unable of their own. power to extricate or save themselves from the great dilemma into which they had fallen. Communion and Feet Washing - We believe that the Lords Supper and the washing of the saints feet are ordinances of the Gospel of Christ; The Lords Supper was instituted by our Saviour to commemorate His broken body and shed blood for the sins of the world and to show our remembrance of Him till He comes. All Christians have a right to the Lords Supper and should be invited. "Let a man examine himself and so let him eat."
