3 A trek back to our Heavenly Father is the most important trek of our lives, and it continues each day, each week, each month, and each year as we increase our faith in Him and in His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. - Elder Ballard, Oct. 1, 2017 General Conference Bishoprics and Auxiliary Presidencies- As most of you know, the youth of the stake will participate in trek June 25-28, The stake presidency and stake leaders desire for this experience to be a spiritual benefit to not only the youth of the stake but also all the children, adults, and families of the stake. To this end we invite you to consider in your presidency meetings and ward councils how you might incorporate trek and the lessons learned about the Savior from our pioneer ancestors into your weekly and monthly activities, lessons, and programs. Individual families should also be encouraged to have a similar trek/pioneer focus now and in the coming months. Ward YW and YM Presidencies- Starting January 2018 please include some type of trek/pioneer focus for each of the monthly combined activities for all the youth of your ward. This will allow for at least 6 trek focused activities before the youth experience trek. The planning for each of these activities should still be accomplished by the youth leaders of your ward (i.e.- Beehive President, Teacher Quorum President, etc.) with your counsel and guidance. Below are some trek focused ideas. Please recognize this list is not comprehensive and may be added to or adapted to meet the specific needs and desires of your ward. Additionally, please plan for a stake combined activity June 6 th for all youth eligible to attend trek. These activities, or similar ideas, might be incorporated into other ward auxiliaries, ward activities, or as individual families: Pioneer Activity Ideas (*Bolded activities are required for the youth) Research pioneer ancestors (both those who crossed the plains and those who first joined the Church)* Temple trip. Encourage Family History work* Square Dancing* (training forthcoming) Search the scriptures for other pioneer journeys Study D&C 136 Pioneer themed service project Hike. (Ensign Peak, Big Mountain, Emigration Canyon, Parley s Canyon, to the water tower, etc.) Daughters of the Utah Pioneers museum Visit This is the Place Heritage Park Visit First Encampment Park (17 th South, 5 th East, Salt Lake City) Read/study a pioneer related book and/or stories of the trail Watch a pioneer related movie Play pioneer games Learn basic pioneer trail first aid Dinner of pioneer era food Create a family ensign/flag Dress up. Find pioneer clothing around the house or a local thrift store Learn common pioneer music and dances Create a pioneer song, poem, artwork, video, multimedia, play, etc.

5 Trek Fabric Cutting Guidelines 2 yards = 72" long x 45" wide Cut fabric strips here 1 1/2" wide x 20" long Cut fabric strips here to tie to trek belongings - cut 1 1/2" x 45" long FLAG 20" wide x 25" long 20" for flag 52" of fabric for luggage strips Each Trek family will purchase 2 yards of fabric (45" wide cotton) in their assigned ward color. Please don't exceed $2.99 per yard in price. Each family should select a different print in assigned fabric color (stripes, stars, polka-dots, etc.). Submit your receipt to a member of the stake YM or YW for reimbursement. Cutting Directions: Flag: Using a rotary blade & ruler, cut 1 piece of fabric 20" wide from the 2 yard length of fabric. Turn that piece of fabric, and cut it 25" long. This 20"x25" piece of fabric will be your flag. Save remaining piece for luggage strips (see below). Press all edges under 1/2" and then fold in again 1/2", folding square at corners. Sew around edges, making finished dimensions of flag 19"x24". No further decoration of the flag is needed. Instructions for mounting the flag to a pole will be given later. Please bring your flag to the June 6 Stake Trek Activity. Strips of Fabric: All remaining fabric should be cut into 1 1/2" wide x 45" or 20" long strips (see illustration above) to be tied around all equipment/gear/belongings that will be coming on trek. (Buckets, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, pillows, tents, small backpacks for bus ride, etc.). Please bring these strips to the June 24th check-in and the youth will tie them onto all of their belongings for labeling purposes. You should have strips of fabric for your trek family.
6 Ma and Pa To Do list Now until Trek Schedule time off from work and arrange for babysittersj (June 25-28, 2018) Under the direction of your bishopric and the ward youth leaders, help find ways to include your entire ward in trek and pioneer related lessons and activities. Get the youth in your ward excited to go on trek! Help organize the trek families in your ward with your bishopric and YM/YW president. Start exercising both physically and spiritually. Research your own pioneer ancestors (or first member). Research pioneer experiences and/or Conference talks. Purchase material for your trek family (coordinate with your ward- 2 yds. for each family). Start compiling needed equipment.
7 Ma & Pa Guidelines 1. Each couple should help at the ward level, under the direction of the bishopric and youth leaders, in implementing lessons and activities that include as much of the ward as possible leading up to trek. 2. Each couple will be responsible for supervising 8-10 youth from their own ward ranging in age from years old and will comprise your trek "family." Supervision will be required for the duration of trek (June 25-28, 2018) including: bus ride to and from Wyoming, on the trail, in camp and during all other trek activities. You may not know the youth in your "family" and they may not know you or each other. Cooperation, teamwork and respect will be essential as you grow as a "family." Each Ma & Pa is expected to: a. Lead the family in activities such as get-to-know-you activities, the sharing of each participant's pioneer story, meal preparation, following conference rules, problem solving, etc. A few minutes may be available during bathroom stops or after dinner for family discussions. Please don't plan extra activities - just be prepared to fill down time with their pioneer stories or by discussing what they have experienced so far. b. Keep things positive - encourage appropriate behavior by setting a good example and maintaining a positive and supportive approach before and during the trek (no audible or mental whining!!) If you have concerns speak directly to your bishopric member, ward youth leader, or stake liaison. Your family should be working together. If you find yourself running around gathering equipment, loading carts, doing dishes, setting up and taking down tents, etc., something has gone wrong!! Help all members of your family learn to be responsible and helpful. Everyone will be tired, but that is part of the experience, don't do it alone! c. Maintain hydration - Keep yourself hydrated and make sure everyone in your family is carrying their water bottle and drinking from it. Refill often. Each cart will have a 5 gallon jug of water as well as Gatorade. Tell the youth how much to drink i.e. your entire bottle before lunch time, etc. Bathrooms are provided along the trail - these fears should not keep them from drinking. d. Enhance the spiritual experience - Prepare well and seek the Spirit in all you do and say. The manner in which challenges are faced and handled will have as much of a lasting impact on the youth as any of the prepared activities or devotionals. Seek inspiration for this calling and act upon promptings. Prepare for spiritual experiences yourself - they will happen for everyone. 3. Each adult leader must be there for the entire trek and walk approximately 5 miles the first day, 6.5 miles the second day and 6 miles the third day. Each family will pull a handcart the entire way. We will be camping in fairly primitive circumstances and the young women will stay in tents on one side, young men on the other, and ma's and pa's down the center of the campground. 4. All participants are to wear pioneer style clothing throughout the trek. No short sleeve shirts or jeans are allowed. See equipment list and patterns for more information. Further instructions regarding clothing will be forthcoming. 5. Each participant will need a letter from home. Mas and pas will need to ensure everyone has a letter and more details about this will be forthcoming.
