BLOOD DRIVE Our St Marks Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a Blood Drive on Sunday, September 20, in Christopher Hall from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. This GIFT OF LIFE is not only in support of our community, but especially for particular ones of our St Mark's parish. The need for blood is constant and your support is requested for providing this GIFT OF LIFE to those of such need. Family and friends who are in good health are all encouraged to participate in this blood drive. With a parental consent form, anyone 16 years of age that weighs at least 120 pounds are considered as a good candidate. Anyone 17 years of age that weighs at least 110 pounds are also good candidates. There is no upper age limit. There is no cost to donate blood at the blood drive station and it only takes about one-hour of your time to provide this GIFT OF LIFE. In fact, doctors say that it is actually good for your own health to donate blood. To change your category from a potential blood donor to an approved blood donor, you must present your photo identification, last four digits of your social security number, and your birth date. While waiting, you and your friends will be provided packaged snacks, fresh fruit and fruit drinks, cookies, donuts, decaffeinated coffee, and water. RESPECT FOR LIFE AND SQUIRES DIAPER DRIVE A baby Diaper Drive is being conducted by the Respect for Life organization at St Mark and the Knights of Columbus Squires. The purpose of the Diaper Drive is to help those strong women that made the decision to save their baby s life. In just two weeks our Squires Drive obtained a total of 5707 diapers, 5196 wipes, several blankets, many bottles of baby soap and lotion, some maternity and baby clothing, and other essentials. The Squires Drive delivers these donations to the Allied Women s Center who in turn distributes these baby essentials to the strong mothers in need. A delivery of an additional 3090 diapers recently collected is expected to be delivered to the Allied Women s Center very soon. There is definitely a need for such donations as well as help from our Squires and parents for their delivery. If a parent is willing to transport the diapers, please contact Jason Hill (phone: ). Congratulations go out to Brother Jason Hill (Squires Knight sponsor), to our robust group of Squires, and to their parents. We also need to give a special shout out to Cathy Nix (Respect for Life) for all her efforts in getting the trail cleared as needed for all of this successful effort to be achieved. This successful very worthy Diaper Drive should be considered as one to continue, perhaps set up as a yearly scheduled drive. As you can see in the following photographs, our Squires used a hand and a head for delivering many boxes of baby furnishings.
MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL As seen in the photograph below, our good brother Ron Hrncir gave the announcement Are you ready for Monday Night Football? Starting Monday, September 14, and continuing every Monday thereafter for 16 NFL Monday night games, you can watch the games on our new huge screen in Christopher Hall. Bring whatever food and drinks you desire for yourself and to share if you want. Our Council will have coffee, sodas, and beer on hand for your donation. The first Monday night game on September 14 is a double header with the first game starting at 6:10 pm and as such, the Hall will open on that day at 5:30 pm. The first game will be the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Atlanta Falcons and the second game that starts at 9:20 pm will be the Minnesota Vikings versus the San Francisco 49ers. All of the other Monday Night football games will start at 7:30 pm with the Hall opened for our pregame activities at 6:30 pm. Following are the teams performing on the 2 nd and 3 rd Mondays of September: Sep 21 New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts Sep 28 Kansas City Chiefs vs Green Bay Packers
Ron Hrncir presenting Monday Night Football ONE NATION UNDER GOD The Knights of Columbus submitted to congress that the words Under God should be added to our pledge of allegiance. Both Houses of Congress passed the law and it was signed by President Eisenhower in A recent poll taken by NBC on what percentage should keep the words Under God in our pledge versus the percentage who want it removed. It received the highest number of responses ever received in NBC poles with 86% in favor of retaining the pledge of allegiance as cited below: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. It is most unfortunate that 14% of those voting in the polls wanted under God removed from our pledge of allegiance. HABITAT HOUSE Our Council will be starting the construction of a habitat house, named the Bishop Flanagan house, starting at 7:00 AM on Friday September 11. As indicated in the following photograph, we will be framing the house starting from an existing concrete slab. The work our two days will include standing up the wall panels and plumb walls, priming and painting the exterior trim and fascia, installing the front porch beam and loading the trusses. Knights, we need your help. Please let Bill Faucher know that you are coming (which day) so that an appropriate number of lunches will be ordered and prepared. A total of 25 volunteers per day is needed. Bill Faucher can be reached at or Bill.Faucher@Gmail.Com. At this time, our Council is
responsible only for the first two days of the build; therefore, Friday (Sept. 11) and Saturday (Sept. 12) are the only times thus far that Bill Faucher needs to be notified of your attendance. However, since the project will be continuing every Saturday for 13 weeks, anyone who wants to go to the site and help may do so. Those of you that want to carpool can meet in the lower parking lot at St Mark's at 7:00 AM on the 11 th and 12 th of September. Maps will be provided (see below) and opportunity to carpool will be available. Generally, the work will last until 3:00 PM followed by a site clean up before heading home. It will be a tremendous amount of fun and a really great time to build fraternity. We would like to see as many of you come as possible. One major benefit is you will not have to strip wax off the floor in Christopher Hall. Let us now meet the Vallin family who want us to know that they feel blessed to be able to own a home and have stability in their lives. A picture of Hector and Raquel Vallin with their daughter (18) is provided below:
Raquel works in a meat packing plant in cold temperatures and strenuous conditions. However, Hector is disabled and unable to work. Despite these obstacles, they have always tried to provide the best for their daughter Jessica. VINNY S BISTRO FOR HAVEN OF HOPE On July 29 we helped to feed 408 homeless men and women at the Haven of Hope. The KC 7613 Knights participating in this event are Marvin Boroski, Deacon Gil Hernandez, John Avery, and Ysau Flores. The others shown in the following photographs are volunteers and employees of Haven for Hope. Gary Ploetz, President of the Board of Directors for Meating the Need, organized the work and arranged the preparation and serving of the Vinny s Bistro food. The manager of the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen said they were not getting enough vegetables from the San Antonio Food Bank. We, Council 7613, then donated enough green beans, corn, peas and carrots to cover half of the evening meals served for two weeks. Actually, we have delivered shipments of food (costing about $2,620 per shipment) to the kitchen every other Tuesday for 8 years. Volunteers and Marvin Boroski, right side w/cap
