THE MARINER KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS STAR OF THE SEA COUNCIL #7297 SERVING ST. EDMOND PARISH REHOBOTH BEACH, DE Fall Edition September 2012 My Brother knights: Dying You destroyed our death, rising You restored our life. Lord Jesus come in glory. How often do we think of death unless it happens in our personal life and family? It is not a popular subject over a cup of tea, and definitely not over our evening cocktail. I ve had the opportunity recently to explore this area of human life. About four months ago I suffered a brain tumor and was taken to Thomas Jefferson Hospital for surgery. The operation showed an additional tumor in my left lung that would require removal at a later date. This will come about shortly. The situation gave me a great opportunity to think of death in a positive way. It reminded me of a book I read years ago entitled On Death and Dying by Helen Koehler Ross. Miss Ross, after much research and investigation was able to show that cancer patients wanted to talk about their illness and to share their feelings with loved ones. Dear Brother knights: I want to thank my Brother knights for giving me the opportunity to represent Star of the Sea Council as Grand Knight. The new Columbian year has started and we are looking forward to an exciting year of service to the church as Catholic gentlemen. Our calendar of events has been planned, reflecting teamwork and cooperation that celebrates each individual s time, talent and treasure. The success of our efforts will come from the individual involvement of all our brothers, fulfilling our Catholic duties, to benefit our families, parish, community and the nation. I wish to extend a special thanks and congratulation to our Past Grand Knight, Dennis Huss for helping us achieve the Double Star Award for our council. This was truly a special accomplishment. May God continue to bless each and every one of you and your families. Vivat Jesus, Dave Wilson, Grand Knight The exchange proved to help all the family in making personal decisions together. Death is part of the cycle of life. It can be made beautiful by sharing it with our loved ones at a very special time. God will call us all home. Pray it is a beautiful trip. Deacon John Smith

SUPREME COUNCIL NOTES Cardinal Dolan Commends the Loyalty and Work of the Knights of Columbus The Archbishop of New York addresses the Supreme Convention truth and light of the Gospel as passed on so faithfully by the Church we love to family, work, education, politics, culture, and the public square. Nobody does it better than the Knights, the Cardinal proclaimed, and for that, hear your bishops say thank you! FINANCIAL SECRETARY REPORT Past Quarter Results This last quarter hit us with our per capita payments for both Supreme and the State. We had 155 members subject to tax (excluded Honorary Life and Disabled members). Supreme per capita is about $1.50 per = $ Catholic Advertizing is $.50 per = $77.50 Culture of Life is $.92 per = $ State per capita is $3.75 per = $ Praising the Knights of Columbus at their 130th Supreme Convention in Anaheim, Calif., Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops addressed the crowd. On behalf of his brother bishops, he said, he was there to express his thanks to the Knights for two reasons. The first was the generous and unfailing loyalty of the Knights of Columbus to the pastoral goals of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops especially the defense of religious freedom. You know what we Knights have said for 130 years for God and country, the Cardinal said. And we defend our first and most cherished freedom yes, as Catholics, grateful for a land that welcomed our forefathers in the faith to a sanctuary where freedom of religion was listed as the first. But we also defend religious liberty as loyal, patriotic Americans citizens conscious that government in the noble American project exists not to define, invent, or impede our freedoms, but to protect freedoms which by their very nature come not from government, but from almighty God. Knights of Columbus, he continued, we need you now more than ever. Calling on his brother bishops, of whom about 80 were in attendance, the Cardinal asked, would you back me up in saying it would be difficult to find an organization more loyally allied to our goals than the Knights of Columbus? The second reason for his gratitude, he said, was the lay leadership exemplified by Knights of Columbus. I thank you, and I thank almighty God, Dolan said, because the Knights of Columbus, I believe, are the genuine harvest of the vocation of the lay faithful that the Second Vatican Council spoke about: committed, credible, compelling, concerned Catholic laity who cogently bring the One thing about the state charge is that the amount also includes liability insurance for council functions. Contributions included $873 to Birthright of Delaware for Roses sold. In August we changed our checking account from County Bank to WSFS. We are continuing our CDs with County until the CDs mature, and then we will compare rates. PGK Russ Allen, PROGRAM DIRECTOR S REPORT With this edition of the newsletter you will notice a new reporting format for the Program Director s article. Service Programs: Frank Barnes has accepted the position of Programs Director. He is looking forward to expanding the number of activities in the coming Columbian year with a goal of involving even more brother knights. Every one of the six committees listed below has room for additional members. We are asking that every Brother indicate one or more of the committee(s) that is or are of interest to him. To assist in this effort, the Programs Director has given each of the Committee Directors a written set of standard responsibilities. Church: We are pleased to announce that Bob Frankenberry has agreed to be Church Director; in addition to providing active support to many of our different committee events, he is also a member of the Parish Council. Further, Frank (Ray) Cilea continues his commitment to support those who are called, by again serving as our Vocations Chairman.

More brother knights are needed to support Church activities which address the needs of the Church. We will continue to conduct a Rosary service just prior to our Family. Priesthood Sunday will be celebrated in October, and we are trying to coordinate an appropriate form of recognition for our parish priests. A banner has been selected to highlight our efforts to Keep Christ in Christmas, and we are coordinating where it will be placed. Bob Frankenberry will need help in refurbishing/preparing the Christmas Crèche for placement during Advent. Carl LoRicco and Dennis Huss have agreed to chair the sale of religious Christmas cards, which will begin after Masses on October 28 th. Community: Gar Zakarian has graciously agreed to serve as Director of Community activities, through which brother knights undertake efforts to shape the world around us. This year we are accepting the challenge to conduct a new major activity all our own the First Annual Star of the Sea Golf Tournament to be held at the Rookery on October 10 th. At a cost of $100 per person, this year it will benefit The Home of the Brave in Milford, a charitable organization providing support for less fortunate military veterans. Mike Crescenzo is chair; more Brothers are needed to join this new event committee. A Tootsie Roll drive was conducted August 25 th and 26th at the Super G ($552) on Rt 1, and again on Labor Day weekend after all the Masses at St. Edmond ($1335). The sales and donations will benefit those who face intellectual disabilities. After conducting appropriate due diligence, Star of the Sea Council donated $250 to the Wounded Warrior charity. As the tourist season began, we donated excess foodstuff to the Cape Henelopen Food Basket, CHIMES sent us a thank you letter in appreciation of the $500 donation we sent them. More touching were the handmade cards received from some of the children from the Sussex Consortium which is a Special Education Public School, affiliated with the Cape Henelopen School District. The Council has been advised that volunteers are desperately needed at the New Life Thrift Shop run by the Lewes-Rehoboth Association of Churches, located behind the Jiffy Lube on Coastal Highway. If you are or become a volunteer, please tell Gar or Frank Barnes so we can better gauge what our Brothers do for our community. Everyone is looking forward to our first dinner, a traditional spaghetti dinner that will be held Saturday, September 22 nd. In addition, our first Sunday breakfast of the Fraternal Year will be held on Oct 14 th. The dinner and breakfast events will be a shared responsibility of several of our committees, depending upon how the proceeds might be used. Lucky for us, Bob Frankenberry has agreed to chair the breakfasts and dinners, but has asked for additional volunteers. Family: Russ Allen will continue to serve as Director of our Family activities, all designed to strengthen family life. There are many events supported by this committee and we are seeking a volunteer to chair the events, which include our monthly pot luck social. This means making sure we have enough people for the set up and take down of tables and chairs, and importantly, establishing a theme for each social, so that they remain as successful as last year. In addition, we would also like to consider a new activity to bolster family life in the parish. If you have any ideas, please send them to Russ and Frank Barnes. Our Family of the Month is as follows: June 2012 Our family of the month for June is Sal and Dorothy Curci. They have been married for 49 years and have two daughters, Elizabeth and Theresa, and four grandchildren, all living in Connecticut, Sal retired from Siemens Power Generation sales offices and loves to play golf and read. Dorothy retired from the Norwalk, CT school system and does a lot of volunteer work. She is cofounder of the Glade Quilters which makes quilts for the VA Hospital. July 2012 Our Family of the Month for July is Dennis and Dawn Huss. They have been married 41 years, and have a daughter, Denise, and a son, Jay. They also have four grandchildren. Dennis retired from Chrysler and began a lawn service company which he recently transferred to his son. Dawn worked for Christiana (DE) Care and is currently a visiting nurse. Besides spending many hours as a Grand Knight and now as Faithful Navigator, Dennis also enjoys golf, boating, and fishing. Dawn loves to read and to watch the grandchildren. AUGUST 2012 Our Family of the Month for August is Bob and Bernadette Worthing. They have been married 41 years and have two daughters, Victoria, who lost her husband in Iraq, and Allison, who has a 4 year old. Bob is a retired attorney who served as general counsel of a public company and supervising director of an international joint venture. Bernadette was an elementary school reading specialist. Both are very active in the church Bob as captain of the Lectors and member of the Liturgy Ministry and Bern on the Communications Ministry. They love being caregivers for their grandson when Allison s local yarn shop is open. They have taken extended family and a young adult into their home helping and providing guidance. Bob and Bern also have sponsored and corresponded with an elderly widow in Columbia through the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA) for some years. Council: Assuming an additional responsibility, the Director of Council activities is Ed St. Jean. Projects and events designed to promote our fraternal relationships, our culture as Catholic gentlemen, and enjoyment from socializing

among our brother knights is the focus of this committee. On-going and new undertakings will be helped by additional volunteers. Ed Holley has agreed to continue in his position as Public Relations Director. Public Relations is based upon the Council committee objectives, but has a scope that encompasses all aspects of Star of the Sea and facilitates meaningful communication within the Council, and outside to the Parish and to the Community. The annual Christmas Party will be held at Kings Creek Country Club on Saturday, December 9th. More details will be announced in the future, but this promises to be a gala affair. Set aside this date. Volunteers are being sought to help with the set up in the Hall for our business meetings and to make sure there is a volunteer to obtain refreshments (reimbursable) for each meeting. The Council committee shares responsibility for family socials with the Family committee. In fact, it has involvement with all of our breakfasts and dinners, as well. As everyone is already aware, we have a new account, and you should recognize communications coming from Star of the Sea Council. Anyone interested in obtaining Star of the Sea Council shirts or Father Capodanno Assembly shirts should contact Andy Palumbo to place an order. Andy s address is apalumbosr@comcast.net and his home telephone number is or cell Youth: Rich Duffy will continue his leadership as Youth Director. He has worked during the tourist season to plan programs with our parish youth ministry. This is an exciting development because we can proceed in a coordinated fashion to help build Catholic leaders for the future. The Youth committee has a calendar of eleven events that begin with Faith, Fellowship & Frisbee on the Beach Sunday, September 30 th, and ends with a Beach Volleyball Barbeque, Sunday June 2 nd. Additional members are needed and can make a real difference. Now we need to perform. Pro Life: Deacon Jim Walls has agreed to continue as Pro Life Director. In addition, he and his wife Cheryl will serve as our Pro Life Couple. Our range of activities will begin soon. Deacon Jim reported that the Respect Life Committee of the Diocese of Wilmington is again sponsoring a workshop for parish pro-life leaders and anyone else who would like to attend. It will take place at St. Polycarp in Smyrna on Saturday, September 29. Registration begins at 9:00 and the program extends from 10:00 through 2:30. The Keynote speaker will be Matt Franck of the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton. His address will be, Life and Liberty in a Secular Age. Matt Franck is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Radford University in Virginia. He is a widely published author and his areas of interest include constitutional law and the judiciary in addition to issues of life and marriage. After the keynote and the celebration of mass there will be workshops on end of life issues, the difference between intrinsic evils and matters of prudential judgments, Rachel s Vineyard, best practices for your local Respect Life Committee, and end of life issues. There is no charge, but donations will be requested to cover the cost of lunch. To register, contact Fr. Leonard Klein at lrklein45@comcast.net. The Respect Life Committee of St. Edmond Catholic Church is hoping to get as many people as possible to display Choose Life Car Window Decals on their cars. All Knights are encouraged to participate. Decals will be available at the September business meeting. Volunteers will hand out bottles to be returned with contributions at all St. Edmond s Masses on Saturday Oct. 6 th and Sun. Oct. 7 th to benefit the Sussex Pregnancy Care Center. Finally, the next Life Chain is scheduled for Sunday, October 7th at St. Jude s from 2 to 4 pm. To our many brother knights who helped with past socials, breakfasts, and dinners, we extend a sincere thank you for a job well done. Without your assistance we would be unable to raise the funds for the many charities that we support. Frank Barnes, MEMBERSHIP REPORT Spotlight on Membership Congratulations and welcome to Matt Ponton, Patrick Breaux, Bruce Aldred, Brian Aldred and Joe Iandolo who completed their first degree on June 9th at St. Edmond Parish. With these new members, Star of the Sea Council has now fulfilled all the requirements for "Double Star Council". The Star of The Sea council is also honored to have George Meringolo transfer into our Council. The following candidates are scheduled to become third degree Knights on Saturday, September 15 th, The degree will take place at St. Edmond Parish Hall; the candidates are requested to be at the Hall at 12:30 p.m.

Larry DeFrancisco, Deacon James M. Walls, Michael P. Boswell. Rev. John Lunness Our target for this Columbian Year is to increase our membership from 187 to 200 members. We have, to date with the transfer of the one new member, a total of 188 members, only twelve members to go to reach our goal of 200 members. We presently have nine men on the roster that still are in the status of 2 nd degree. We continue to hope and pray that in the right time that these men will further their experience with their brother knights by becoming 3 rd degree Knights. Please make sure if any of you current 3 rd degree Knights are planning to attend the 4 th Degree Exemplification, which will be held in Dover, De, on November 10 th, at The Sheraton, that your paperwork is in to Membership Director, or to the Grand Knight A friendly reminder that membership is the responsibility of the entire Council and not just one person. We are all accountable for the continued success of the Council by recruiting new members. God Bless, PGK Randolph C. Smith, Membership Director KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE Don t wait, act today When you re family is hungry, you see that this need is taken care of quickly. You don t put it off until tomorrow; you act immediately to the best of your ability. As a provider to your wife and children, your responsibilities are great and your time is spread thin. It is easy to forget important tasks or let them slip to the backburner for later. Everything, including your health, can change in the blink of an eye. Don t put off today what can t wait until tomorrow. As your professional Knights of Columbus agent, I urge you to make securing life insurance for you and your family a top priority. It is my fraternal obligation to make sure that every member has the opportunity to protect his family with the Order s toprated insurance products. I ll work with you to put a plan in place that will help your family when that help is what they needed the most. Your Knights of Columbus insurance program is second to none. As the premier safety net for Catholic families for more than 126 years, our insurance program makes me proud. But I m also concerned that too many of our brother knights have not yet looked into the needs of their family. I suspect that, for many of them, life insurance has drifted to the backburner until tomorrow. Don t be one of them; move your insurance needs to the forefront today. Contact me or me at Vincent.Maviglia@kofc.org. Let s talk. Vincent Maviglia, Insurance Agent, DELAWARE STATE COUNCIL NEWS We are off and running for the new Columbian Year with State Council officers elected and on the job and council officers and program chairmen in place as well. Our state council officers and delegates recently returned from the 130th Supreme Convention held in August in Anaheim, California, but I have heard nothing, to date, on issues emanating from that gathering. My guess is information from the convention will be addressed at the next State Council meeting on Thursday, September 13th, at Saint John the Beloved in Wilmington. The Knights of Columbus State Picnic held on Sunday, August 19th, was a huge success. As always, food was abundant and the fellowship was superb. Installation of council officers for the six councils in District Two has been completed and the councils are rolling out their respective activities for the fraternal year. I am certain all membership directors will be promoting the guild honoring our founder, Venerable Michael J. McGivney. Membership is free to brother knights and assists in promoting the cause for canonization of our beloved founder. From a handful of men in 1882 to 1.8 million members today, demonstrates the vision that Father McGiveny had and the tremendous effort of brother knights over the years to grow our Order. If you are not already a member of the Father Michael J. McGivney Guild, please join now. I look forward to a year in which brother knights of District Two advance to full knighthood in the Third Degree and to the Fourth Degree for those eligible. I continue to be "at your service" in any way I can. Don't hesitate to ask question or ask for assistance. I look forward to the best Columbian Year in the history of District Two PGK Lou Anderson, District Deputy UPCOMING ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS Where has the summer gone? With the arrival of September, it is time to finish wrapping up summer projects and to begin preparing for the coming fall season. Come join us for a Member s meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the St Edmond parish hall.

POT OF GOLD At each meeting, a member s name is called and if that member is present, he will win all the accumulated Council Share of the 50/50 tickets. Jim Bailey would have won in June. Mario Roca would have won in July. However, the BIG winner was Dennis Huss at the August meeting. He left the hall with $400 more in his pocket. The pot for September will be around $25 and it could be yours. What a great incentive to attend a meeting for an hour. Remember you MUST be present to win!
