1 The Shepherd s Voice E P I S C O P A L C H U R C H O F T H E G O O D S H E P H E R D, H E M E T, C A Volume 58, Issue 3 May-June 2018 A Big Thank You to Fr. Michael Preaching on a regular basis with you on Sundays I don t ever want to bore you. The quote comes from a sermon by Rev. Michael Carr a few weeks ago. Members of Good Shepherd have responded to that comment: You never do, Fr. Michael. As our most frequent celebrant for the last six months, congregants have agreed that the Rev. Michael Carr s sermons are pointed, understandable, and never boring. It has truly been a joy to share our Sundays with Fr. Michael and with Kelly, his wife, and we appreciate the jaunt they make each week from Vista to be with us. But after the middle of June, another commitment will take him away from Good Shepherd. For that reason, ECW is planning to make Fathers Day (June 17) a special salute not only to our fathers, but to Fr. Michael. More information with be available soon, but be sure to join us on Father s Day after the 10:30 service. In the meantime, we have a little trivia quiz for you. You may know (because he s mentioned it) that Michael and Kelly have three grown children; you may know that they met when Michael and Kelly s father were students together in seminary. You certainly know that Michael sings tenor in his home church (if you listen carefully, you might hear him rendering the tenor line in the entrance or dismissal hymn as he passes down the aisle!) and that Kelly does the tax returns for the family (remember her absences during tax season?). But what else do you know? Fr. Michael s sermons have illuminated the gospel lessons, often by using personal experiences. Here are some questions about him see if you can answer them. If you re not sure, go to the church s website to hear many of his sermons and find the answers. If you still can t figure it out, the answers are given on p. 6 A Fr Michael Trivia Quiz 1. How many years since Fr. Michael was ordained? 2. In what church was he raised? 3. With what church does he associate Ephesians? 4. Where did he attend college? 5. What course was he taking for 8 weeks during his time here? 6. Fr. Michael cited a book he had used in teaching confirmation classes which he found useful and entertaining. What was the book? 7. What was his college major? 8. He described a health program he created for clergy in two dioceses. Where did he have the clergy climb on rocks? 9. He once said, I was raised where people went to church on Sunday.

3 Cursillo Weekend 2018 was held in a new venue. We said goodbye to Camp Stevens and hello to Pine Valley Bible Conference Center in Pine Valley, CA. (about fifty miles east of San Diego). We were there from Thursday through Sunday with a lot happening. This was a grand experiment since all of our years experience at Camp Stevens didn t apply to Pine Valley. Tradition has it that each team member does their turn at cooking meals and serving everyone that attends the weekend. Pine Valley did all of the cooking this year, so our kitchen team became known as Prayer Warriors. This was a very new experience to say the least. They took turns praying for the new candidates and the team. They also had team prayers that proved very powerful. Pine Valley Camp was on flat terrain, but we all got our exercise by walking everywhere we had to go. Sue wore her Fit Bit step counter and it gave her a friendly buzz every day around four-thirty indicating that she traveled ten thousand steps and still had many more to go before the end of the day. The Music Team didn t have a home base while we were there. We started out in the Fireside room every morning at six-thirty for a Eucharist service with the clergy and the prayer warriors. The Rollo Room in Worthington Lodge was busy having their Morning Prayer service. After the Eucharist the boys in the band traveled to the Rollo Room to play music before breakfast. The Music Team wandered the camp looking for places to practice throughout the day, always ending up in Worthington Lodge to play music before each talk that was given and each of the meals to come. Good Shepherd was well represented at the weekend. Gary Gentry and Linda Rush were table leaders for the new candidates. Catherine Weaver V OLU ME 58, ISS UE 3 By Sue Gentry was Camp Nurse and Sue Gentry was the Head Musician. There were seventeen new candidates this year that were supported by a team of fortythree experienced Cursillistas. Catherine Weaver shared, My favorite part of the weekend was during the closed closura when the candidates tell us what made the most impact on them. It brings it all together for them and makes it all worthwhile for us workers. It is so much more than a thank you could ever be. Gary shared, the new men at his table were open to the leading of the Holy Spirit and Piety was already a part of their lives. Sue enjoyed singing praise songs with a team of five guitar players that shared the weekend. We sang one hundred and six songs from Thursday to Sunday (not including service music) and those songs were full of the Holy Spirit and very inspiring. Linda Rush said that she enjoyed the whole weekend. It was all quite pleasant and she had three women candidates at her table. They were from the other Good Shepherd in Bonita and St. Barts. Linda said that she always learns something when she listens to the talk on the Sacraments. It was all quite inspired. Although we didn t send a candidate from Good Shepherd, Hemet this year, we are hoping by next year there will be several people that are being called to the weekend by the Holy Spirit. We shall see. It could be you! Turkeys at the camp: I was amazed by them when I was coming out of my bunk house one morning. The two males were in full display trying to impress the one uninterested female. 4 100 Months of Sundays We haven t seen you in a month of Sundays! That s how my parents would greet visitors to our home. No one ever questioned what that meant it obviously meant a long time. And it s a phrase that s been around a long time at least 3 centuries. It s defined as a long, unspecified period. For the early members of Good Shepherd, it was a very apt phrase for the length of time it would take to get a church built. In fact, considering the time between the establishment of the Mission of the Good Shepherd and the first service in the new church, a hundred months of Sundays might be more accurate. In 1903, the Mission of the Good Shepherd was established in Hemet. It was established because a congregation wanted it. And even though the valley already had an Episcopal mission, the diocese agreed and Rev. Daniel T. Booth accepted the mission as an additional responsibility. His first responsibility here would always be St. Paul s Mission in San Jacinto his son s mission. Sunday morning services continued in San Jacinto while Sunday afternoon became service time for Good Shepherd. The parochial report for 1903 presents an objective descriptions of the two missions: St. Paul s claimed 78 members and an active Sunday School of 19 students and 4 teachers. Good Shepherd reported 23 active members including six families and a number of individuals. It was a start. And there was at least one immediate impact. As the Hemet News reported two weeks after the first service in Hemet, Mr. Whittier promises to donate two lots for the erection of an Episcopal chapel in Hemet. W.F. Whittier gets much credit for his generous spirit in giving land for churches, but it was a very practical consideration on his part. He understood that to encourage folks to come to his town, he needed three things: water, schools and churches. Both the Baptists and the Methodists had received lots from him and had built their churches within a year. Now it was Good Shepherd s turn. The first annual meeting in 1904 gave two promising indications that Good Shepherd would be successful. First, the mission was being fiscally responsible. The financial report for the year showed an income of $ and expenses of $160.52, leaving a balance of $ (If you want to get a feeling for how much that would be today, multiply each of the numbers by 25). Second, a very important decision was made: It is proposed to organize a Ladies Guild in Hemet. The Guild was organized with it s first goal: to erect a church and rectory upon the two lots given by Mr. Whittier. Messrs Easton, Eldridge & Co. have also promised fifty dollars towards the Building Fund. The fund was begun a church would be built. The deed for the two lots (lots 9 and 10 in block 32, town of Hemet) were delivered in June. And the women had already begun working: From their work and donations they have accumulated some money. In December, the ladies gave a Fine Supper and Entertainment which raised another $149. The following April, a lady in England donated 3 pounds to the cause (which took a bit of explaining about the rate of exchange in the Hemet News) and that November the Ladies Guild held their now-annual bazaar which was not only an artistic success but also earned them more than $100. Page 4 NEWS LE TT ER TI T LE

5 And they were thinking very practically: The ladies of the Episcopal Guild have been much interested in two beautiful plans for an Episcopal church for Hemet, prepared by Rev. D. T. Booth. Either plan would be very acceptable and very moderate in cost. In early 1906, with a new church still in the planning-and-fund-raising stage, members of the congregation were much surprised to hear Rev. D. T. Booth announce his resignation. He had come to continue his son s commitment to valley Episcopalians; it was finally time for him to continue with his own life. Of the four children who had come to California with him, only one remained at home (he had performed a marriage for one daughter, Sarah, at St. Paul s Mission a year earlier; his son, William and daughter, Marga- Good Shepherd, Cloverdale, CA had moved on with their lives. Now it was only Rev. Booth and one daughter, Gertrude.) He had been called to Church of the Good Shepherd in Cloverdale a church with a newly-built rectory. He would finally leave the Diocese of Minnesota and enter the Diocese of California, a rector again in his own right. With the loss of Rev. Booth, services were suspended for several months, but the fund-raising continued. ret, In April, Californians were completely shocked by an event that came to be known as The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. With so much damage and displacement, building a church in Hemet would have to wait. In May, the Guild gave a dinner-dance at the Hemet Opera House to raise funds to be sent to help the people of San Francisco. It would not be until the end of the year that the bishop would find a priest for Good Shepherd. In the meantime, with other work that needed to be done, the work toward a new church would also move ahead very slowly. Some Final Thoughts on Rev. Daniel T. Booth Good Shepherd s First Rector Rev. Daniel T. Booth was 70 years old when he began his ministry in Cloverdale; two years later he moved to St. Paul s in Healdsburg, but he was already losing his sight. Encroaching blindness caused him to retire in He moved to Long Beach where he died in 1919 at the age of 83. This description from his obituary is most fitting as we remember Good Shepherd s first vicar: For twenty-eight years Mr. Booth gave faithful and undivided service to his church in Minnesota. In 1900 his oldest son, Laurence, was ordained to the ministry and was stationed at San Jacinto, California, where a year later his father followed him, to help him with the church duties which were becoming too heavy for his failing health. Following the death of this brilliant, exceptionally gifted son, Mr. Booth resigned his pastorate Rev. Daniel T. Booth in Willmar and took up the work in San Jacinto.... May 7, 1836-July 13, 1919 To many, blindness is a crushing sorrow; not so to Mr. Booth. The culture of a life-long habit of study and thought, and the richer culture of a sweet, contented, loving spirit which remembered the good and forgot the bitter in life, and trusted unfailingly in the Master whom he served, gave him resources within himself which, together with the devotion of his children, made the close of his life serene and happy far beyond that of most men. We re Bible-believing people. (Lent 4) Pot-Luck Corner At the 5th Sunday PotLuck in April, Mae Kramer s Lentil & Blackbean Chili proved very popular and several folks asked for the recipe. She says her recipe was a bit different: I bought the Lentils and Fire roasted Tomatoes at Walmart but they didn t have chilies and I forgot to put in a small can. I used paprika instead of chili powder and didn t have any sweet red pepper, but it tasted good anyway and everyone enjoyed it. Mae LENTIL & BLACKBEAN CHILI 1 ½ C dry French lentils (picked over for debris) 1 TBSP olive oil 1 large onion, diced 1 large sweet red pepper, diced 2 TBSP minced garlic 3 TBSP chili powder 2 tsp dried oregano 1 ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp kosher salt 29 oz canned diced tomatoes, fire-roasted with chiles, undrained 31 oz canned black beans, rinsed and drained ½ Cup fresh chopped cilantro Place lentils in large saucepan; cover with water by several inches; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer until lentils are tender but retain a little bite, 10 to 15 minutes; drain well. Meanwhile, heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook onion, pepper, and garlic, stirring often, until veggies are softened, about 10 minutes. In a cup, combine chili powder, oregano, cumin, cayenne, and salt; add to skillet and mix in. Cook, stirring often, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes, their juice, and beans to skillet; stir well to combine. Cover skillet and simmer, about 5 to 10 minutes. Fold in lentils and cilantro; serve. Who s minding the office? If you ve called the parish office lately or stopped by during the week, you should be please to know that caring and knowledgeable parishioners are on board, keeping the office open and operating. On Tuesdays and Fridays, Hope Huffman is the church representative often going to battle with the copy machine. John Bacher. Hope Huffmann and Carolyn Castner On Wednesdays it s Carolyn Castner, and on Thursdays John Bacher sits where his wife, Grace, sat for so many years when she served as Parish Secretary. Thanks also to Judi Greer and Richard Taylor who have taken their turns in the office seat. Several other parishioners have offered to help out and will, undoubtedly, be called on in the weeks ahead. As the weekly activities of the church continue from finances to altar work to organizational meetings it s of primary importance that we keep the office operational. Page 6 NEWS LE TT ER TI T LE
